I really wanted to love this game, as someone who's a big fan of tycoon games (and actually works in TV). Unfortunately, this is a direct rehashing of the Game Dev Tycoon formula - which is a great game - but doesn't necessarily translate well to TV, as they are two completely separate processes. There's no actors here, no (realistic) directors, no writers, no commissioning process, no real channels, the genre/setting combos don't really make sense. Overall, it feels like the game is trying to fit a square peg (television) into a round hole (the Game Dev formula). It was fun, for about 60 mins, and I persevered, but ultimately it felt too shallow, and I didn't feel any connection to any of the series (there wasn't even an option for a sequel, which seemed strange? Unless i didn't get that far). Also, how many new technologies does this game fire at you? It's difficult to keep up with that, the money making etc. (the whole viewership thing is totally unrealistic too.) I took a punt on this game, won't be asking for a refund as it was so cheap, but I'm not sure I'll be playing again... Fundamentally can't get into the mechanics paired with the theme. 3/10.
OK I really want to love this game, but with my short time playing, it does feel like a tv series port of game dev tycoon. And even then there were other itterations of that game I enjoyed more, this direct tv series port doesnt really make sense. One of the first things I think that stops me from being immersed is the money seemingly being in dollars, i.e 50 dollars i think you start with. Good luck making a tv series with 50 dollars. And the location doesnt make sense either - i know in game simulation games - its buying a licence for a game system, i.e pc. But this is what to broadcast to a school? How does that work? 1000 people in the school can view it. Am considering getting a refund, but the problem is, I really want to like it. So if it makes more sense, and i think more than tutorial, I think there need to be more thought to some of the categories ie, instead of the Target category, what that is and that that means. And what does complexity me? I know its hard to split a tv series into basic concepts like you can with a game, But i think it needs to make more sense.
I mean, it's not bad, but dude, don't be so misleading. And yes, in fact, in this game, you CANNOT: Construct your protagonists Build custom stories Produce further seasons of your favorite series Own Streaming-platform Travel through time, from the 80s up to the present and revolutionize the TV-World
NOTE : I gave this a thumbs up for what this game can be with some alterations This is basically Game Dev Tycoon but for movies instead of games. AS in Game Dev Tycoon, you start in your garage with no money and no tech, but as you progress you unlock new tech, new studios etc etc. The game works just like Game Dev Tycoon in that you allocate three sliders to match what kind of movie you are making, and you need to find an optimal placement for them, and eventuallly you get to add in more and more tech stuff to your movies. PRO: -builds on Game Dev Tycoon -loads of research -you get a sense of progression -price CON: -language errors (translated from German to English) -very lacking tutorial. Aka it says "you need to have enough fans before making medium films" but does not tell you what "enough" is. -you cannot make (atleast as far as I have progressed) cross genre movies. I chose history-medival and set up the comedy part for my "Camelot is a silly place" movie (Monthy Python style was my thinking), but was told that comedy was not right for gistory-medival. -a few GUI issues that I feel could have been better than they are So to conclude, the game shows promise, but could use with some patching, and maybe some mods.
It tries hard to not be "Game Dev Tycoon" by changing the "Game" design to "Series". But it fails at that.. The game itself is repetitive in a non fun way. The menu system gets very unresponsive quite often, as mouse clicks arent even registered. The click is visible and audible, but nothing happens, no menu opens and so you will click several times for a menu responds. I managed to go bankrupt, even though i just released a "show" with a rating of 8, but since the month ended. Even with the "Bankrupt" message popping up, i still was able to see that the viewer bar filled up and i made 1.1 million, but the game still ended at that point. There is no real "tutorial" for certain parts of the game. Like Why not make colours match up with the crew names? Even getting more employees and making more "money", there is no real sense of progression. Since all you do is just making "bigger" shows for "bigger" studios. I give it a 4/10 - Bad Theme Combo
I don't want to be mean but this game sucks. I hate to write that because it's an indie game and all that, but it's bad. It's a blatant ripoff of Game Dev Tycoon, except that it's horrible. Game Dev Tycoon took you through the history of video games from the late 70s until almost the present. It allowed you to be creative (in a limited way) with game design, build your own developer studio in various creative ways, offering alternate paths to making money. It was a great game. This game is so much more limited. You're limited to two pre-created protagonists that you use in every single series. We do not explore television history at all. There is no creativity in coming up with shows. Hell, there's not even a proper tutorial. This game is a frustrating, empty, broken mess of a game. If you're going to rip off Game Dev Tycoon at least do a better job!
Game turned out to be dissapointing clone of game dev tycoon, which is really bad for the devs. Why? Because the game looks like a cheap copy of gdt, lacks content at start and doesn't really suck you in like gdt does. Basically the RNG system is very bad, getting perfect score note is impossible even if you do the perfect combination. Protagonists? I had two of them at the start, randomly generated from RNG system as well. Peter North who was a female, which is funny because the system couldn't even generate something like a basic algorithm of name detection or some stuff? This would be the best series/movie tycoon out there, because there are basically none yet on steam, but they seriously thought that copying a succesful game and not even polishing it would be a good idea. Overall game lacks content, is not really enjoyable in terms of "Random" system and is a blatant copy of GDT. Hopefully devs will fix that game so its more enjoyable and not the next "2hour content"
Man, where to start. Not being able to hire actors from even a limited list is a pain. Having the randomly assigned themes is a pain, but then the research cost increases every time, so eventually you are forced to repeat combinations. And you aren't creating a "series", as they are one-off projects. That was genuinely confusing. Just three dimensions to balance? Weak. Only one actor for project? Weak. Right now, I would rather play Game Dev Tycoon, and just install a free mod to be about movies instead. Yes, that exists.
I beat it in five hours and wanted a bit more to be honest.... Without involving the semantics of being a blatant rip-off of Game Dev Tycoon, mind you a game that is not available in my country on Steam, I can therefore without bias say this little game is not as good as Game Dev Tycoon, but it is a cheap and functional substitute. There is not a lot of replay value here because of the low number of settings, places where productions are filmed, and a lot of nonsense similar topics of subject matter that don't gel as well with those settings. There is some interest in the progression system but not a lot more than just one playthrough. But I still might come back around for more because of the novelty of making funny named series' and then see them become blockbuster hits. If Game Dev Tycoon is available in your country you can have that internal monologue about the ethics of supporting a cheap rip-off game and maybe I'll do so when that game is available for purchase in my country later perhaps.
Buggy as hell, yet still fun. You'll get bankrupt many times without actually meeting the coditions for getting bankrupt, but still fun. Dev, if you read this: I know what the problem is. Your game checks after every single calculation of the budget if the conditions for the bankruptcy are met and since you first lose the money you have to pay and then get the money you get for the day you can go bankrupt even with over 200.000 ingame $. It's easy to fix, either you check for bankruptcy after you did all the calculations for the day or you simply first add the money for a day and then subtract the expenses. It would fix the most annoying and most present bug in the game and make it way better.
