Update 5/29/24 Well we have not heard any news from the devs since November. This is not a good sign. Nothing since my review has changed but I am going to change my review to negative because this might be abondoned. Great little game. As somebody who dedicated their entire academic career to studying Rome, (BA and MA) this game is very refreshing. It is decently simple. It is mainly a sim where you manage money of the family and slowly make progress. The main "antagonist" or struggle of the game is when your primary character dies all the land and money is divided among your children which generally sets you back significantly. The family management element is really basic with you only really designating your successor, marrying children off, and paying for their education and selecting their jobs. The game only has four mana types. Family Prestige, which from what I can tell is not used for a lot. Personal Influence which is only really used for political office events which is not a lot. Money which is significant as it is the most prominent game play feature. And finally Property Value which dictates your social class. There is small adjustments I would like made and additions to make the game more engaging. -More in depth character management and character elements. Like genes and traits passing on. Like smart and attractive people passing those onto their kids. Being able to assign inheritance at the expense of Personal Influence or Family Prestige. -Making social class based on Family Prestige and not your Property Value/Money. -Adjusting the UI of characters as if you live a long time and have a lot of kids and they have a lot of kids, it becomes a very long list. -Making war a little in depth. Ability to influence declaring war and peace. More events. More movement of promotions. (During which currently, I had a character "get promoted" to a lower job within the army then what he started.) -Making properties more diverse. I know the idea of the game is about the city of Rome specifically but even citizens of Rome would own land in other provinces of the Republic and later Empire. Larger Additions I would wish for. -Maybe a dynamic map of the empire which interacts with the war idea and Property Idea above. -Visuals for Political positions, aka senate and office seats. Visuals for Military rank within Units like a ladder to climb. (I do understand Roman offices and ranks are very complex.) -Just overall expansion of events. I know and understand this game is early in development but I have very high hopes for this game to be successful. In my opinion this is probably one of the better games in the text based lifesim/familysim genre.
You've seen the trailer... I thought the same thing. Something about it kept me clicking through the years... its surprisingly rewarding nature? Ease of exploring your own strategies? Yet a certain challenge. Then, I blink and it's suddenly past my bed time. No game's ever made me feel quite so immersed in Roman society.
its one of those bitlife kinda games, but with way less content. the dev doesnt update the game often so there really isnt much to do. you click advance, see the same events over and over again and thats it. its entertaining tho! i wish it had more flavor events like crusader kings for example. i'd give it a neutral score, but between a thumbs up or down, i decided for a thumbs up
Really enjoy this little Dynastic simulator, deep but relaxing. Can you make it to the Senatorial class? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=609uuu1uTdE
#1 Dead baby simulator Cons Very repetitive and simplistic game. Pros. Very repetitive and simplistic game that is a lot of fun for the people who enjoy managing families. I found myself losing hours trying to keep my kids educated and denari in the bank. I really wanted a game that I could play for a long time without having to break my brain or fight and kill. Has a lot of replayability.
Now, I give this game a thumbs up, even though I think its only for a certain 10% of players, so maybe don't run out and buy this unless it appeals. It offers a unique game loop, where you develop your family wealth, and try to reach the pinnacle of Roman society during the Republic. Pivotal decisions are the marriage matches, military service, education and gambling. These make or break your family. Less significant are the relentless festivals, giving of annual gifts, and maintenance of pets. There is a range of things to invest in, but this is not actually a major part of the game. Calamity will strike and set back your large extended family to one small nuclear unit from that group, but this is part of the game. You aren't as far back as it feels, and sometimes other distant members of your family die off, leaving you sizeable estates of 40,000 denarii. It is primarily an economic sim, where you manage the family as your income generating assets. It is exciting to build up a family out of nothing, and rise up to become an Equites. If you have an appreciation for Roman history, then you may love this game for that living-in-Rome experience. I'm a historian, and I give this a gold seal of approval for accuracy and breadth of knowledge. I played it a bit, but I know I will eventually return to this game and finally get elected to the lowest position on the Cursus Honorum, Queastor. I can only dream of having someone in my family become Consul. The strategies are somewhat limited - get good jobs, educate your kids, don't squander money you can't afford, make good marriages and serve in the military. That being said, the primary gameloop is somewhat tedious, it is a lot like playing Crusader Kings without plots and warfare. (Also, if you have played Crusader Kings you will immediately recognise the positive and negative characteristics represented by tiny icons, 100% sure the dev played CK) If you don't love this game within your first two hours, return it for free, it won't suddenly get better on hour 10+.
Ah, what tales there are to tell of the dynasty of Fufius Burrius. The martial wins. The lost appendages. The glorious heights of politics and the shameful falls due to gambling. The wives of each heir carefully vetted for their wits, economic sense, and beauty. The broad family tree, the vast properties, the hoard of pigs. And wait, where did those 8 hours go?
One of my favourite games, life simulating a roman household and life. It has so many events and is so much fun.
First, I played this game on my iPhone, and then moved to PC. The gameplay here has no specific end, which reflects the "reality" of life. However, for ambitious players, the ultimate goal can be achieving the consulship—the highest state office in the Roman Republic. This requires climbing the career ladder (Cursus Honorum) and attaining the status of a "new man" ("Nova ♥♥♥♥")—a kind of new nobleman, you know. It is important to note that the game seems difficult at first, but the main thing is not to give all your money to your heirs (just like in real life). You can lose everything you've worked for, but thanks to well-thought-out mechanics, sooner or later you'll achieve success and wealth despite temporary setbacks. Overall, this game can really captivate you for a long time—you can literally get hooked and spend countless hours immersed in it. However, it's worth noting that there is a lack of certain minor yet significant mechanics such as managing titles, developing your offspring, creating junior branches of the family (lines), and organizing revolutions.
Fun smaller game, not that advanced in its mechanics. I get the feeling it has so much more potential to be an absolutely amazing game if your actions outcomes where more dependant on your characters skills and you could train your characters deliberately after completing school. Also could use way more interactions with events dependant on your characters profession and property. The developer seems to be making updates continuously and overall for its price i enjoyed it greatly.
