Underbite does a good job with their games. While I preferred Super Dungeon Tactics, this one's got its own charm.
You like X-Com? You like Sentinels? You'll probably enjoy this, the missions are pretty enjoyable all things considered and the writing is fun.
This game is amazing! I truly hope they keep it going for awhile.
No depth whatsoever. Turn based rpg made for toddlers. pass.
Greetings! Today we’ll be looking at “Sentinels of Freedom” a turn based tactics game that is based on the table top RPG setting. I don’t know a great deal about the table-top itself (never tried the system) but I know it is very popular in the comic book scene of table-top players. I wouldn’t be surprised if fans of the setting enjoy this game but does it stand on its own as a game? Let’s discuss! A Dime an Issue: The setting is clearly the focal point of this game and not completely in a bad way. The graphics use a bit of amateur cell shading with acceptable animations and the story is told in a comic pane style. Audio and Music was extremely disappointing; here was a good opportunity to show off the epic nature of the setting but the effects felt bland and worst still the game cycles what feels like 2-3 tracks throughout the entire game with little rhyme or reason for it. I wish I could say that the gameplay is better but that is not the case. Every Day I’m Summoning: Sentinels is a turn based ‘Tactics’ style of game in the vein of X-COM and the core bones of it are there. Moving, attacking and interacting and your team have a wide variety of actions they can take. The character creator is probably the single most interesting feature of the game, which is a shame as your custom character doesn’t feel as fleshed out and unique as the named characters and I found myself wishing I could have taken a different character. I will say that Summoning is King, maybe that is a controversial statement but I feel an accurate one. I’ve always enjoyed ‘pet’ classes so this didn’t really bother me but the mechanic can be heavily abused. Filler Issues: The game has a desperate lack of depth, most attacks are the same just with minor numerical tweaks. The only real attempt at depth is the attack / defense with just boils down to a bonus or penalty on damage potential based on the defense vs. attack type. It is also very easy to misclick, especially for movement which I found frustrating from time to time. The story itself is also very forgettable, criminally so. I’m sure that it may be something enjoyable by fans but for me it was just a boring and poorly written generic comic book plot. I do enjoy the anti-communism plot so there is that but did little to raise my opinion of the rest of the game. Overall, I wish I could have liked this game, but the combination of frustrating and boring gameplay with the lack of any depth to the story just made the game feel like a chore. At best it made me want to go back to some of the other tactical games I have. The game is just boring with mechanics that just don’t work well for this genre. If you like Sentinels you may find something here but if you are looking for a solid tactics game I’d continue searching. Enjoy!
