Somewhere in deep space, at an apparently abandoned mining base on the asteriod Alpha Prime, something has gone terribly wrong. Miners were warned that the hubbardium they were mining was too dangerous, but the lure of unimaginable wealth was too strong.

Alpha Prime, developed by Black Element and published by Bohemia Interactive, is a sci-fi first-person shooter that reflects a transitional moment in the genre—caught between classic corridor shooters and more experimental, system-driven designs. Released in the mid-2000s, it attempts to layer narrative intrigue and light mechanics like hacking and time manipulation onto a traditional FPS foundation. The result is a game that feels ambitious in concept but uneven in how those ideas come together. The story centers on Arnold Weiss, sent to investigate a mining facility on a distant asteroid where workers have begun exhibiting violent and erratic behavior. The cause is linked to a mysterious substance known as hubbardium, which introduces a psychological and scientific angle to the narrative. The premise is strong, blending corporate exploitation with sci-fi horror undertones, but the delivery is subdued. Much of the story unfolds through radio conversations and scattered environmental details, which creates atmosphere but lacks the cohesion and emotional engagement needed to make the plot truly compelling. It often feels like a backdrop to the action rather than a driving force. Gameplay follows a linear progression through a series of enclosed environments, with a steady emphasis on combat. At its core, Alpha Prime plays like a traditional shooter, offering a range of weapons and straightforward objectives. Where it tries to stand out is in its additional mechanics. Players can use a hacking tool to interact with the environment, disabling security systems, manipulating cameras, or turning defenses against enemies. There’s also a bullet-time feature that slows down combat, allowing for more precise reactions during intense encounters. These additions provide moments of variety, but they are not deeply integrated into the overall design, often feeling more like occasional tools than essential systems. Combat itself is functional but frequently frustrating. Weapons have a solid feel, and there is a decent variety, but enemy behavior and balance can undermine the experience. Opponents are often highly accurate and aggressive, leading to encounters that rely more on cautious repetition than dynamic engagement. Instead of encouraging creative use of mechanics, the game often pushes players toward safe, predictable strategies. This can make firefights feel more tedious than thrilling, particularly in later stages where difficulty spikes become more pronounced. Visually, Alpha Prime was competent for its time, with detailed industrial environments that reinforce the isolated, mechanical setting of the asteroid facility. The use of lighting and confined spaces helps create a tense atmosphere, though the lack of environmental diversity becomes noticeable as the game progresses. Most areas share a similar aesthetic, which can make the experience feel visually repetitive. By modern standards, character models and animations appear dated, but they still serve their purpose within the game’s overall presentation. Audio design contributes to the atmosphere but is inconsistent in quality. The soundtrack supports the setting with subdued, industrial tones, but voice acting lacks the strength needed to elevate the narrative. Dialogue delivery can feel flat, reducing the impact of story moments that might otherwise have added depth. Combined with occasional technical issues, this inconsistency prevents the audio from fully supporting the game’s intended tone. The structure is entirely linear, with no multiplayer or significant side content to extend its lifespan. While this keeps the experience focused, it also limits replayability. Once the campaign is complete, there is little incentive to return, as the game does not offer alternative paths or meaningful variation in how levels can be approached. Its relatively short runtime reinforces the sense that it is a contained experience rather than one designed for long-term engagement. What makes Alpha Prime interesting is not what it fully achieves, but what it attempts. The inclusion of hacking mechanics and time manipulation suggests a desire to move beyond straightforward shooting, hinting at a more layered design that never quite materializes. These ideas add moments of interest, but they lack the depth and integration needed to define the experience as a whole. In the end, Alpha Prime is a game with clear ambition that struggles to fully realize its potential. It offers a competent core shooter experience supported by a strong setting and a handful of interesting ideas, but it is held back by uneven balance, limited variety, and underdeveloped mechanics. For players interested in older sci-fi shooters or curious about experimental design from that era, it provides a worthwhile, if flawed, experience. For others, it may feel like a title that sits just short of becoming something more memorable. Rating: 6/10
best old school hardcore shooter! robots have autoaim and if u fall from 2 m u losing half hp, if u shoot basketball in 1st location if it bounce on u, u lose 51 hp. Every fight feels like last, cause enemies also have autoaim and dont miss! no ammos, 1 or 2 hp potions through lvl and if u failed , no autosave start from begining! true hardcore !
If you liked Chaser, Devastation, Red Faction, etc this will be right up your alley.
Not bad if you want something Doom like (Pre-2016)
HOW IN THE H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS IS ALPHA PRIME THIS GOOD??? this is not even some hidden 10/10 masterpiece that everybody unfairly ignored. this is a completely normal, borderline mediocre 6/10 sci-fi fps from 2007. the enemy ai sometimes runs directly into gunfire like it has somewhere important to be, the voice acting sounds like everybody recorded their lines at 3:00 in the morning, and the story is delivered with the confidence of a man explaining a dream he only half remembers. this is literally the exact kind of game you would find for $4.99 in the pc game section at ollie’s bargain outlet, buried between 30 obscure casual hidden-object games and something called “terrorist takedown 3.” which was released in 2004, yet based off the in game screenshots on the back of the box, looks like a cheap copy of delta force 2, a game from 1999. (delta force 2 from 1999 is better than the free to play delta force 2025 remake, crusty old janky games that you would install on a beige Windows 98/ME/2000/XP computer just hit different) this budget eurojank doom III ollies bargain outlet “oh im surrounded by a dozen casual hidden object games and fps’s with graphics that look 5+ years older than from the release date” looking ahh game slaps so insanely hard my dumb gen z zoomer brain is unable to comprehend. WHY IS THE MAIN MENU MUSIC SO DRAMATIC AND EPIC WHY WHY IS IT SO GOOD?? here are some rough examples of one particular characters dialogue “Aaaaah! Another nutcase! Mutant! È un po' toccato! Hubbardium! Heeelp!… Em... you are... normále?” “Arnold! Paolo knows this thing! Very dangerous! Beautiful woman! Strange Hubbardium! At night Paolo hears it inside the walls, singing like opera, but bad opera, porco zio! Do you believe ancient space legend? Glomar, Arnold! Very old space legend! Paolo does not believe such nonsense! But perhaps Paolo believes little bit! This Hubbardium makes men crazy! Also machines! Maybe doors! Paolo does not trust door! Your brain is up the spout, Arnold! “Arnold, you must listen to Paolo! Beautiful woman knows something! Beautiful women always know something, but never tell Paolo! Very suspicious! Paolo injured! Look at leg! Terrible injury! Maybe permanent! Definitely permanent for Corporation paperwork! Pension, Arnold! Paolo deserves excellent pension! Small house! Perhaps garden! No more asteroid!” “Wait! Noise! Soldiers coming! Paolo cannot fight because injured pension leg! You fight! Paolo gives important advice from behind strong box! Go left, Arnold! Or right! Paolo does not remember! This place all looks same!” “Strange Hubbardium is speaking inside Paolo’s head! It says terrible things! Maybe ancient space people still here! Glomar! You laugh before, Arnold! Now who laughs? Not Paolo! Paolo is injured!” “Hurry! Beautiful woman waits! Paolo trusts her completely! Except perhaps not completely! Maybe fifty percent! Good enough for beautiful woman!” “Arnold! You go first! Paolo follows safely behind! Paolo always with you! Unless dangerous! Then Paolo waits here! But spiritually, Paolo always with you!” “AUGH! Owww! They have killed Paolo! Paolo is hit! Poor leg, completely dead! Blood poisoning is already coming! No, Paolo go nowhere! Paolo is cripple! Disability pension! Io me ne frego! You can go alone, Arnold! Save Warren, find Glomar, shoot the crazy men!” arnold: hmmmmmmmm okay paolo the cripple.
Some of the things this game does, it does well enough to put it on par with Red Faction, Half Life, etc.... BUT. Most of the time this game is a mess. It runs great, HOWEVER, there are a few spots where you have to stand on a moving platform. This is affected by Fast PC. I swear it took 20 minutes for the platforms to move 10 feet. I was dying laughing. Made a drink. Grabbed a snack. Halfway there. All in all this cheesy dialogue, overpowered enemy, interactive classic FPS is in the "Glad I played it, but probably won't again." category.
game crash constantly and have FPS drops.
Very clumsy and stiff movement, did not enjoy it.
