Senet: Households is one of those rare games that doesn’t just use history as a backdrop—it invites you to walk inside it, to feel its weight, its mystery, and its humanity. Rooted in Senet, one of the oldest known board games in the world originating in ancient Egypt over 5,000 years ago, the game carries profound symbolic meaning. Historically, Senet was not merely entertainment; it represented the journey of the soul through the afterlife, a ritualized struggle between order and chaos, fate and agency. Households understands this deeply. It treats Senet not as a curiosity, but as a living cultural artifact, translating its spiritual and philosophical significance into an interactive experience that feels reverent, thoughtful, and alive. What truly sets Senet: Households apart is how it positions its rules. Instead of overwhelming the player with rigid instructions or abstract systems, the game presents its mechanics as something to be discovered. The rules unfold naturally, mirroring how ancient players themselves might have learned—through observation, repetition, and meaning rather than raw explanation. Every mechanic feels intentional, grounded in symbolism, and connected to the broader themes of balance, progression, and consequence. You’re not just learning how to play; you’re learning why the game works the way it does. The teaching philosophy of the game is especially elegant. Senet: Households teaches through a journey with different level households, not a tutorial. As you progress, the game gently guides you forward, trusting your curiosity and intelligence. Each step feels like an initiation—an invitation to reflect, adapt, and grow. This approach creates a powerful emotional rhythm: moments of uncertainty followed by clarity, challenge followed by understanding. It’s deeply immersive, and it respects the player in a way that many modern games forget to do. Equally important is the story behind the game’s creation. Senet: Households exists because people believed in it—through funding, support, and trust in its vision. That support is felt everywhere: in the polish, in the care for historical accuracy, and in the confidence of its design. This is not a commercial product chasing trends, even because at the time of this review, the game is free; it’s a labor of love made possible by a community that values culture, experimentation, and meaningful play. If you care about games as art, about history as something you can experience rather than read, or about supporting creators who dare to do something different, play Senet: Households. Talk about it. Share it, it is free. This is the kind of game that reminds us why the medium matters—and why it’s worth supporting the people who push it forward.

Good gameplay in overall. But there are things that need improvement: - Slow story load: I waited for couple of seconds before deciding to skip. - Lack of tutorials: Since the game is not that hard, I still take some moves to know what (new) rule is implemented. - Graphics options: I can go for better models.

Ik heb Saffier ingemaakt in het tournament als first time player dus deze game is een 10/10
i beat that arrogant cleopatra with her own rules so bad she didn't get a single piece off the board. so i felt confident and went to try multiplayer. however after waiting for a bit i checked steamdb and realized i'm the only player online. the game is fun, the story mode was nice to have, there was effort put into it.
Actually really fun good story mode with cool artworks
