Secrets of the Witch House Review
Don't feel like reading the whole thing? Down at the bottom is the conclusion and score given to the game! :)
Introduction
A good game that makes you enjoy all of the action and upgrading that comes with rogue-like titles, Secrets of The Witch House is a delightful indie that packs a lot for its size. Weapons are satisfying as they have particular uses and are better suited for certain types of enemies or approaches to situations.
Control and Map Design
When it comes to control, this title is fun. Weapons have their uses, such as rifles allowing you to kill enemies from far away when you are low on health or shotguns being valuable to kill those big armored foes. There is also a bazooka that can blow you up quickly, as the explosion range is quite huge. The real kicker, however, is the shop that allows you to acquire weapons and upgrades. The shop is silly, in a good way! It allows you to spend your gold on whatever you want, and it comes with a pachinko machine, for real. I don't remember how many times I went into the shop to buy a super gun and ended up spending all my savings on the little Pachinko machine to try and get all the prizes; the device resets on each shop you visit, so it's worth to go in every time you find one. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2976394558 The enemies can be fast; I mean it when I say fast. They can close the gap effectively, and some can throw fire at you, which chips at your health. Some foes are intimidating in design, and there is also a range of ones to keep you on your toes. The only aspect I wanted to change about combat was the dodging. It is clunky and ineffective as I move out of the way manually rather than press the dodge button. Likewise, the jump only does a little for you, so you better forget it is there.
Strong Points
The game is packed with nice tricks and caveats: secret rooms to discover and explore by shooting fake walls, activating rage mode can be enjoyable as you get infinite ammo and slow-mo, plus the super guns capable of decimating hordes. You can get this game and put it in seven hours quickly as it keeps you hooked into the action and has more details I will discuss below. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2976394934
Art Design and Visuals
Visually, not the most impressive game. But, it has its nice touches. Environments are crips and look pleasant to the eye, while elements such as structures can be destroyed. It adds a touch of dynamic interaction as your bullets can make a mess out of the map, and you can be surprised at how effective that can be when used for purposes in the gameplay. For example, the crossbow is one of the best weapons as it can one-shot most foes, so clearing out any obstacles in the map can be helpful to land those clear shots. The models of the characters are pixelated and rocky, which is a letdown when comparing them to the environments of the title. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2976394814
Sound, Replayability and Performance
The sound of weapons is excellent, each gun packs a good amount of impact into the bullets as you shoot, and you can certainly notice. The explosions do also sound quite good. The game has no voice acting, and enemies do sound lacking. Replayability is not a strong suit here despite it being rogue-like. As the game is linear and you have only one objective, it is more of a beat-and-be-done-with-it type of deal. You can get most achievements quickly, so for the average player, you are looking at 4-7 hours, and for the completionist, it could be from 5-10, depending on how good you are. Performance-wise, this game will run on most hardware with no issues, and I only had one crash in my whole time with the game. Other than some clunky controls, the titles play out adequately.

[TH]
Pros
[/TH] [TH]
Cons
[/TH]

Many details, such as hidden doors and upgrade shops.
Fast-pacing gameplay that keeps you hooked easily.
Dynamic environments that can be destroyed.

Terrible models impact visuals a bit.
Waste mechanics are clunky, such as dodging and jumping.

Conclusion
Secrets of the Witch House is a game that you can put some time into and dig in to have fun in a simple title with hidden details. If you like rogue-likes and want to distract yourself or have fun without compromise, this game delivers. I recommend it to those that like retro games, rogue-likes, and action titles. 8/10 GREAT If you enjoy and find the review helpful, please follow my curator StarsDeck! https://store.steampowered.com/curator/43679955/
Secrets of the Witch House is challenging, your not going to beat this the first go round, but the procedurally generated levels makes permadeath less annoying and re spawning more rewarding. I keep saying just one more game. Its the little things that will have you falling on the ground laughing or crying but always tipping your hat to the developer. The unique weapons all make you want to solely use them, continually finding a new favorite weapon. I will find out what the dark secret is at the bottom of this place.
Great game with a lot of character! Enter the Witch House and slaughter your way into the depths of ... well, find out for yourself. Every run is different and the weapon variety keeps things fresh. Easy to pick up and packs a solid challenge with a charming style and sense of humor. 10/10 would pachinko again!
Fun title with rogue-like ingredients including procedural level generation, permadeath and resource management, but minus the turn-based nature and twisted into an action FPS. Quick and easy to pick up and play, SOTWH isn't punishing just for the sake of being punishing. Unlike certain other games this game feels (for me) like it could be beatable - one day. The game never takes itself too seriously. How can it with a weapons arsenal that includes lasers and nukes? The writing style is humorous, and the game somehow manages that Spelunky-like achievement of making you smile when you die. Talking of Spelunky - there's also shopkeepers and a pachinko game. I love the low polygon art style - there may only be few polys but they have all been well-crafted showing high attention to detail and loving nods to various horror tropes embedded throughout the background scenery. In my opinion, SOTWH is worth the asking price and importantly provides an enjoyable return on the investment of my time. Recommended.
Fun, challenging, low-poly retro-inspired shooter created by a single developer with a protagonist that looks like a catholic schoolgirl and kicks serious demon butt with everything from a stock revolver to a freaking nuke launcher. Leave your muscle car at the gate to a creepy mansion with hedge mazes full of loot, and descend into swarms of hard-hitting enemies hiding around every corner. Uncover secret rooms, play pachinko in hopes of winning upgrades, and dodge deadly spells and fists. Load screens are full of lore tidbits and helpful tips like "don't die" (thanks, Flavia), and the death screens are delightfully snarky, "a pile of a thousand corpses starts with a single body". The game has received frequent update throughout the early access period, responding to and implementing player feedback. As with many indie games, it has its share of rough edges paired with a dev lovingly working to sand them down and improve the experience of everyone who enters the Witch House.

"A pile of a thousand corpses starts with a single body" and that single body will be yours. Be aggressive, be smart, and you just might make it through to the end. Or you can throw away all your money trying your luck at pachinko. Godspeed and good luck Dr. Jones

Reasonably entertaining although not especially deep, a decent experience to pass time on. The shooter gameplay is adequately engaging. Once the player acquires enough weapons, choosing and rationing them out becomes quite compelling. Particularly due to the enrage mechanic periodically refilling weapons. There is still a fair amount of roughness to the experience however. The dodge animation is slow, the locomotion can be awkward with players snagging on things or getting sped up randomly, the ranged enemies do not have any telegraphs on their attacks, most enemies are just generic melee attackers and sometimes the player gets ambushed around corners. There is a solid amount of weapon and area variety, but not much room variety within those areas. There are no modifiers or other mechanics to really diversify the gameplay beyond its core shooting framework. While the game is presented as a rogue-lite, the actual experience mostly feels linear due to how similar each run ultimately is. The graphics look fine, and the music is nice although somewhat overzealous at times. It seems like this game does have some kind of story but it's very choppy, forgettable and only told through loading screen text. While the core gameplay experience is reasonably entertaining the absence of a fun story really leaves a void. As this game would feel much more complete and fulfilling if it offered a simple, amusing world lore to accompany the progression. The current lore is scant and overly serious to the point of being entirely negligible. Not particularly impressive or memorable as it doesn't really do anything especially unique to leave much of an impression. It's just an okay game. Not particularly bad but not particularly amazing either. The gameplay is engaging enough to be worth dipping into if players are willing to pay the price, which is somewhat high given the small scope of this experience.
