"Search of the Source" is a "template" flip. The "developer" filled out a basic template in the craptastic GameMaker Studio (a blight on gaming), changed the name/reskinned a couple of things, and put it on Steam as if it was their own game. "Search of the Source" is yet another of literally hundreds of lazy amateur 2D retro top-down hack and slash brawlers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This is the standard MO for Lieb/Hardi/Daniel Li/Johan Games/Fadygames (watch how many fake Steam accounts this guy can make up to hide his identity and mislead gamers!)... make a minimum viable product, buy fake reviews, then bulk sell the game in mystery bundles through G2A and other even less reputable vendors. That's why Valve calls stuff like this a "fake game". This is basically an empty, barely functional prototype of a game... an asset flip made of a stolen game template and stolen tilesets and sprites. To demonstrate my point, if you took this asset flip seriously as a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", FadyGames has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players, and the worst part is these weren't genuine players, these were the Russian fake review accounts that the developer paid to make the fake reviews. Since the fake reviews are all done, now the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Warning: Review Manipulation! This game features a number of fake positive reviews from accounts known to be in the business of review manipulation/paid reviews. They're all written in either Russian or broken English, appear at almost exactly the same time, very shortly after the game launched on Steam, all have a direct Steam purchase of the game, and the accounts are used consistently to write fake reviews for asset flips and other cash grabs/scams. The "Positive" review score on this game should be disregarded due to this blatant, unethical review manipulation. This is done to deceive and scam gamers into paying for a bad product.
So, should you buy this asset flip? Of course not. This game was designed purely to bulk sell in random steam key bundles from dodgy key resellers. "Search of the Source" has the comically over-optimistic price of $30 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. It's possible this price is either for the purpose of money laundering, or simply to prevent genuine reviews from reducing the fake "positive" review score from the fake reviews the developer paid for. Either way, this is unacceptable manipulation of the Steam store for profit. It's harmful to gamers and to genuine indie devs, because it gives indie devs a bad name.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
♥♥♥♥♥♥ game overall, terrible price
After playing it for a couple hours I can say that it has nice graphics with an atmospheric soundtrack
A small, simple adventure with role-playing elements. It'll do for a couple of evenings.
Pretty interesting game that captures its atmosphere
best role playing game
Надеюсь разработчики будут добавлять в игру больше контента, а то на данной стадии было как-то скучновато(
will go for a couple of evenings)
I really liked this adventure game, it was addictive to play and I’ll be happy to come back again, I advise everyone to buy it, it’s a fairly fresh game!
Hooked from the start! Each quest and battle throws a fresh challenge, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The magical world brims with secrets, begging to be unraveled. Features like the single-player mode make it an immersive journey perfect for RPG fans who enjoy delving into a story at their own pace. Must-play!
