Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts

Massively FUN!!! Best game I've played in ages - feels like a puzzle game for Artists. Totally putting my fine arts degree and my wild imagination into each task. The Grandfather Mouse's Tale and The Latrine Family are just not to be missed. If you don't want to go way above and beyond then it would not feel fun. At 73 hours I'm about half done maybe. I try to make each one funny - If I've made myself laugh on top of the laughs from the quests lines then I will submit my entry. I always do all the basic and beyond tasks as well. My only wish would be to let us have more palette paint spaces - I want to get all the bought only colors as well as keep a lot of the ones you must mix yourself; 10 is too limiting. In sandbox you can see the whole vast selection of colors but the real fun is playing the campaign. Of course I picked the ex-nun who is a cat lady for my character :D

I loved the art style of Pentiment, and the artwork in this game is phenomenal as well. But to be honest, this just felt like a virtual sticker book rather than a game. In the story mode, you get requests from patrons to create an artwork that fits their theme, but after the first few, it actually felt like I was working, like a chore, not playing a game. Most of the illustrations are locked when you first start, which I guess is to make progression more fulfilling, but it felt like an inconvenience more than something exciting to work on. The illustrations are all listed under categories and don't have individual labels, which was also annoying, because I had no idea what I was looking at with some of them. And although there are a lot of illustrations, the collection still felt pretty limited when working in free mode. Wouldn't recommend unless you are decorator by blood and every corner of your animal crossing island is already decorated.

Scriptorium is a very charming game with a lot of thought and care put into it. Unlike many other art based games, it requires next to no skill or talent from the player, so it is a lot more accessible. Most players will manage to create a decent looking piece with a modicum of effort. The gameplay loop is satisfying and addictive enough that you will suddenly realise you spent hours putting little hats on mice and had a great time doing so. That being said, there are a few issues I would like to point out. First, as stated by some of the other reviews, you can't search the sketches, so you may end up scrolling through the options for quite some time. The sketches are also unnamed, so it can be hard to figure out what you're looking at. It would be really helpful if hovering your mouse over a sketch told you what it was and there was a search bar allowing you to find what you need. Another feature that would be incredibly helpful is the ability to stretch the sketches. You can increase and decrease their size, but you can't make them wider or narrower, which can really be an issue when you're trying to fit some pieces together. Bearing that in mind, neither one of these issues make the game unplayable or anything of the sort, but making some changes would really increase the user experience. Overall, this is a really fun game and anyone who enjoyed messing around in art and photo editing software as a kid will surely have a great time.

It's got beautiful art, whimsy, humour. The real masterwork was the illuminated manuscript-making game we played along the way. Scriptorium having both more structured gameplay via the story mode and completely open-ended gameplay with the sandbox mode is an excellent design choice. The requests in story mode are also great prompts for creatively interpreting a situation, animal, etc. in a way different context as one would hope for in a manuscript game. E.g. the retired knight's bestiary requests. The sandbox mode has so many applications in addition to just having a fun chill time like making visuals for ttrpg games like D&D. It's too easy to get into a flow state of completing requests. Scriptorium is a very enjoyable, visually-pleasing, and chill game that I've already yapped to all my friends about so now I'm yapping here in this review. Highly reccomend.

Die Screenshots im Community-Bereich zeigen deutlich, dass die meisten deutlich kreativer sind als ich. Man hat verschiedene Bauelemente angelehnt an das Mittelalter und baut halt so sein Bild. Malen wäre hier das falsche Wort, weil man wirklich eher baut bzw. puzzelt. Ein wirklich schönes Spiel und eine nette Entspannung für zwischendurch.

This game scratches the creative itch so phenomenally. At the time of this review I've only done three orders and I am beyond enamored. What a terrific delight of a game. Take your time and let your creativity flow and you will have a blast.

I am having a great time with these drawings, I am only so creative, and zero drawing skills, therefore I really appreciate the contracts that help me learn how to put things together. Bought for my great nephew who is really good with Legos and drawing. Give him something to do when he visits.
