I love the vibe of Screamer. The cars look great and it's fun to handle them once the dual stick control clicks. Super satisfying when you manage to drift around a curve *just* right and blitz past your opponents. The story digs a little more into all the playable characters, which are all fun and everyone talks in their native language which I find neat. The story's writing is pretty heavyhanded overall and certainly isn't going to win the Pulitzer Price, but I find it enjoyable enough. For anyone not at all interested in the story though: you can still unlock all the customization options for character through arcade and multiplayer play, so you don't have to play it for any unlocks afaik. If you enjoy arcadey racing games, check this out!
Really wanted to like it but after playing for 60+ mins I was still working on tutorial shenanigans and the storyline wasn't hooking me. I was expecting an anime burnout paradise experience from the trailers so i was bummed out. Might be for someone but it isn't for me.
I like this game. It's fun, unique, colorful. I play on an Xbox controller it works great. I like this game's creativity and all the different factions. HOWEVER! I wish this game offered additional background information on all the different drivers. It would have been cool to read about each person with a short description before starting the campaign, and this could have easily fitted in the gallery section. I like this story although I feel like the story had the potential to be the succulent meal but it was watered down due to the lack of background context to help explain the setting of the story. I would have liked to see more cutscenes, I think the art style looks amazing. But, this is a racing game so I need more racing than cutscenes to balance it out. I grew up playing a lot of racing games, I find this game hard to compare to different games in the genre which I like personally. I would only buy this game if it's on sale, which I did.
Best racing experience I've had since 2010! If you yearn for how fast, innovative and fun the old Burnout, Ridge Racer and Need For Speed titles were, this is for you! Don't let the controls scare you off, once you learn you'll feel faster than ever, even racing the AI is extremely exciting and rewarding. BUY THIS GAME IF YOU LOVE RACING!!! Edit: Couldn't leave the story and soundtrack out, they slap! Just that alone knocks the question of whether this is worth $60 dollars or not, most racing games don't even bother with a story and just license tracks, the art and care here is astounding. And oh, btw, 4 player splitscreen.
The same thing that makes us laugh, makes us cry.
I don't really write reviews, but this game scratched something good in me. I beat the game story on keyboard only controls. -The Good: 1. Super stable. Not one crash or freeze, and I can count on one hand the number of times I had some kind of weird collision with terrain or another racer. Clearly the testers were doing their jobs with this one. 2. The story is a decent drama about you joining the tournament with intent to kill a racer on another team, and had a couple twists I didn't see coming. 3. The controls are quite engaging, in a way similar to Expedition 33(let me explain). In a turn based game, Expedition 33 found a way to give you something to do moment to moment, even during the enemy turn. In Screamer, while you're driving there is always something to do beside just steering the car: shifting up, boosting, striking, or controlling your drift. In most racing games you're just holding the gas and tapping left or right to stay on the road. 4. Car variety is good, with Hina(my beloved) being my favorite. The drifts I can pull off in that machine make me want to vomit a rainbow. Noboru is my second favorite, a bit lighter on the drifting, but super fast. -The Not So Good(Bad, depending on your taste): 1. Chapter 1 has too much story and not enough racing. Yeah, I get they are setting up the world and characters, but it's a bit of a slog. Once I made it into chapter 2 the story pieces became MUCH smaller, and it was much more enjoyable for me. 2. While the controls are engaging, the controls ARE a learning curve. You will need to really engage with the controls and play this game for a few hours to get the hang of it. Up shifting, drifting, boosting, and striking have individual inputs and will require some time to get accustomed to. It probably doesn't help that the cars of the Green Reapers are build more for speed than drifting, which can be a bit challenging. Don't forget to tap the handbrake to take tight corners. 3. Every teams cars handle differently, and you will have to progress through a good chunk of the game before you get to play with the cars of the other teams, such as Hina and Noboru. The changes between cars can be quite jarring to the point where the steering input for some cars does almost nothing, relying almost entirely on drifting to turn. Here is my personal breakdown of the various teams: Green Reapers: bad at drifting, ok at turning, good for speed. If you want to drift, let go of the throttle and throw yourself into the drift as hard as you can, then when you clear the corner punch the throttle. Jupiter Stormers: bad at speed, ok at drifting, good at turning. These cars turn left and right very easily without drifting, and the drifting is very light. Try to steer more, and drift less. SFR: good at drifting, bad at everything else. These cars handle like bricks on wheels, the left and right turn inputs do ALMOST nothing, and you MUST drift to make any kind of turns. These are my favorite, because the drifting is sick. Hina is the best. Anaconda Corp: My least favorite, their cars get huge boosts when striking, but kinda suck at everything else. Same as the reapers, drift early and hard, and ease up on the throttle if you want to make corners. Kagawa Kai: These are the most balanced, they turn ok, and drift pretty good. With the exception of Noboru that drifts like a maniac, and is second only to Hina. tl;dr I'm sure there is a character car in here that YOU personally will love driving/drifting, but you'll have to drive/drift a bunch of them before you find it. Overall, this game has heart. It's clear the devs were trying to do something different, and in many ways they succeeded. Unless you absolutely love racing games, wait until a sale so you can pick it up and dive into it to really absorb the controls. If you get the hang of the control scheme, you'll know before the refund window is up if you want to keep it.
Awful Characters (Positive), Incredibly Unique gameplay, Incredible Story. Amazing racing game, more people need to play this absolue peak. 10/10
Overall it's an entertaining game and I liked it: Pros - Decent story though somewhat bizarre with the turn of the the last chapter. - Most characters are compelling, I liked them, liked how their paths are interwined even before the events of the tournament take place, and I liked how they developed during the game, but I shall note. - At gameplay level, each character car have an unique drive feel, some are faster, some have better handling, it's easy to get 1 or 2 that will become your favorites, and some others that you'll probably hate to drive. - Gameplay is very good, there is a considerable variety on tracks, cars and unique character abilities to choose and play. Races are challenging, fast paced and with a lot of action. -Split screen rund smooth, I really missed an entertaining racing game i could play on multiplayer split screen. - Fermi good boy, I woluld have liked that we could play more as him during the tournament. Cons - Roisin and Lavinia characters I didn't like, they are insufferable most of the time, and
the romance between them was kinda cringy, to the point that I laughed when Roisin believes Lavinia blew up to pieces, sorry not sorry.
- Some very specific tracks, though they could be good for any other racing game, were really painful to play in this game where you have to load and time your powers and boosts. - The story had an open ending for most of the characters, so I wonder if we'll ever see a sequel or if this will become and abandoned IP. - First chapter of the tournament is kinda boring, it only gets good at gameplay level once you unlock the boost and strike mechanics. - Higher difficulty feels more like enemies have infinite boosts and strikes to spam at will. 7.5/10
