Steam Deck

After Limbo release people were craving for more puzzle platformers. What's unique in this one is that you made kind of a bubble or spot where part of level is altered. In this area you see what's beyond the normal stage and you can use that to advance through the levels. Puzzles are straight forward and more focus is put on platforming part. On some rare occasion right timing and strategic jumping might be required. Music is nice in this one, but atmosphere of the game may not fit everyone's taste.

I think Schein got a bit too much unfair criticism - note how many reviews complain about the precision platformer genre rather than the game itself. That being said, the game's not impressive: the aesthetic can leave a bit to be desired, the environments are all pretty samey (or consistent) and I agree that the voice acting could be better (even though it did add flavor to the game), to the point I couldn't help but laugh out loud at a specific line near the end. The story is concise and I haven't found any secrets. BUT. As a puzzle precision platformer, it delivered. The mechanics are straightforward and worked pretty well. The difficulty of both the platforming and the puzzles does not go wild at any point, and it kept the right balance between being challenging but also fun, without turning that frenetic or repetitive thanks to the fact that you'll have to hit the brakes and give some thought to the puzzles before taking action. The progression is linear but you can easily revisit previous levels in case you want to hunt for all the collectibles. It's fairly short and it didn't overstay its welcome. I finished it before I knew it and I have to admit I ended up kind of enjoying the negative points I mentioned before; now I find Schein as a whole a pretty charming experience, slight mediocrity included. Recommended? Very much, especially at this cheap price, but only to those into puzzles AND precision platformers.

As other reviews have already said, this game basically requires pressing button combos (jumps / switching colors / lights) with very precise timing. Some of the early puzzles are fun but it quickly just turns into a repetitive stress injury waiting to happen. If you don't care about potentially getting a RSI and enjoy both logic puzzles and high difficulty revolving around precise timings, then it might be for you. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it to others tho. In addition, some of the levels are very poorly optimized, the "Red Path" level in particular but there were several others (mostly after that level). As pointed out in one of the other reviews as well as in one of the steam discussion threads, the general performance of the game can get laggy / low fps / low framerate after some period of time, generally after the game has been running for 30-60 minutes. Exiting out of the game and restarting it can temporarily fix this but it is annoying to have to do this, especially for what is effectively a 2D/3.5D side-scroller and my system being able to run much more demanding games without any issues. If this game had been designed with more focus on the logic puzzle aspect but without the precise button presses, I think I would have given it a much more favorable review bc I really liked the logic aspect and the aesthetics of the game. Some may enjoy "difficulty" being equated to fast-paced button pressing but I find that it reminds me of quick time events and I really hate having to do precisely timed jumps and such... my hands are seriously sore after playing this. I think maybe part of the issue is that the target audience for this game is lovers of fast-paced frantic button presses + lovers of logic puzzles. But I feel like just as many if not more people would enjoy a casual, slow-paced logic puzzle and mistakenly assume that's what they are getting after seeing the screenshots and video on the store page. Maybe something faster paced being showcased in the video would help to set expectations better, such as some clips of faster-paced sections from the "Speed of Life" level (which I hated more than any other level by far) or the moving blue logs near the collectible in the blue light level (runner up for hated areas). If you are on the fence and don't mind a few spoilers, then I would encourage to look at the schein videos by AveBatTV on youtube and watch speed of life level or some of the ones after that. Disclaimer: I was gifted a copy from another steam user so my review does not take price into account. Neither of us have any association w the devs tho, as far as I know.
