Even with the content update, there really isn't enough content here to justify the price tag. Once you finish the main game (which only takes about 2 hours) what's left is just repeating the same few stages with inflated enemy stats and obtaining new gear which is the same as the previous gear but with higher stats. And that's it. The blatantly AI-generated art that isn't disclosed isn't cool either.

The real-time battles felt fresh and engaging, allowing me to enjoy them with a sense of tension. While there are action elements, the game essentially gives the impression of a turn-based dungeon RPG played at a very high speed, making for a unique system. Since the rules are new, it takes some time to get used to the controls, but I think that sense of busyness adds to the immersion. You can take your time upgrading and building your units before deployment, which provides a good balance, and I found the system to be well-designed. Even for those who aren't good with controls, the difficulty seems manageable by building up your units. Personally, I would have liked to see a more challenging extra mode. Looking forward to future updates! >> Update came in!! Yee-haw!!
If this game was turn based and with more polish it could be better but in its current state it is just too bare bones and feeling like it was designed as a simple phone game that was ported to pc.
Scars of Mars, developed and published by ACQUIRE Corp., is the kind of game that immediately distinguishes itself by refusing to follow the usual rules of its genre. While it presents itself as a tactical RPG on the surface, it quickly reveals a far more intense and unconventional identity by blending real-time combat with roguelike progression and squad-based strategy. Set within a silent and hostile Mars research facility, the game builds its tension not through elaborate storytelling, but through the constant pressure of survival and decision-making in a dangerous, ever-changing environment. What defines the experience most is its real-time tactical combat system. Instead of giving players the comfort of turn-based planning, the game keeps everything moving at all times. Your squad, composed of four customizable humanoid units, operates within a confined grid, and every action—attacking, dodging, repositioning, or activating abilities—must be executed quickly and deliberately. Enemies telegraph their moves, but reacting to them requires both awareness and speed. This creates a unique rhythm where strategy and reflex are tightly intertwined. Early on, this system can feel overwhelming, as multiple threats compete for your attention, but with experience, it becomes a rewarding test of multitasking and situational awareness. Complementing this is the game’s roguelike structure, which adds a layer of unpredictability and long-term engagement. Each expedition into the Martian facility unfolds differently, with branching paths that force players to weigh risks against potential rewards. Central to this loop is the battery system, which steadily drains as you progress. This mechanic introduces a constant sense of urgency, preventing overly cautious play and encouraging players to make bold, calculated decisions. The tension it creates is one of the game’s strongest aspects, as every choice—whether to push forward or retreat—carries meaningful consequences. Customization plays a major role in shaping how the game unfolds. Each unit in your squad can be equipped with different frames, weapons, and abilities, allowing for a wide range of tactical approaches. You might focus on building a resilient frontline, a mobile damage dealer, or a support-focused setup that keeps the team alive under pressure. The flexibility of this system encourages experimentation, and over time, players can refine their strategies to better handle the increasing difficulty. This progression adds depth and replayability, making each run feel like an opportunity to improve rather than simply repeat. However, the game’s ambition is not without its drawbacks. The real-time combat, while innovative, can occasionally tip into chaos, especially in later encounters where multiple enemies attack simultaneously. Visual clarity can suffer during these moments, making it difficult to track threats or execute precise actions. This can lead to frustration, particularly for players who prefer the measured pacing of traditional tactical RPGs. The learning curve is also quite steep, requiring patience and persistence to fully understand how all the systems interact. In terms of presentation, Scars of Mars adopts a functional approach that prioritizes gameplay over spectacle. The environments and character designs are clean and readable, but they lack the kind of visual flair that leaves a lasting impression. The atmosphere, however, is effective, capturing the isolation and tension of a compromised research facility on a distant planet. Audio design supports this mood with subtle, consistent cues that reinforce the sense of urgency, even if it doesn’t stand out as a defining feature. Narratively, the game remains relatively understated. The premise of a rescue mission on Mars provides context, but the story takes a backseat to the mechanics. This minimalist approach keeps the focus on gameplay, though it may leave some players wanting a deeper narrative or stronger character development. Instead, the game relies on its systems and atmosphere to carry the experience, which it does with varying degrees of success. In the end, Scars of Mars is a bold and distinctive entry in the tactical RPG space, offering a fresh take that blends real-time action with strategic depth. It challenges players to think quickly, adapt constantly, and embrace a level of pressure that is rarely seen in the genre. While its complexity and occasional lack of clarity may limit its appeal, those willing to invest the time to understand its systems will find a deeply engaging and rewarding experience that stands apart from more conventional titles. Rating: 8/10
