A mobile game I received for free. I would not have bought it. It is a decent puzzle game but intended for, more intuitive on, and likely more enjoyable on touch screens. Linux (Ubuntu 22.04) version works fine (though full-screen toggle is not persistent) so maybe it would be decent on Steam Deck. I do not prefer the grind-for-highscore type games, but maybe this is for you and your touchscreen device.
Mediocre 3D puzzler. Save the Dodos 5/10 Heisen

Save the Dodos is a charming and thoughtfully designed puzzle game developed by 3DDUO and published by SOEDESCO Publishing that revolves around a deceptively simple idea: guiding helpless dodos to safety by manipulating the world around them. Rather than placing the player in direct control of the characters, the game challenges you to act as an unseen helper, reshaping terrain and redirecting paths so that these famously clumsy birds can survive their journey. This indirect control immediately sets the game apart from more conventional puzzle titles and gives it a playful, almost mischievous personality that runs through the entire experience. The structure of the game is built around a large collection of handcrafted levels spread across several themed worlds inspired by different historical periods. Each setting introduces new visual styles and environmental hazards, which keeps the experience feeling fresh as you progress. The dodos themselves behave in predictable ways, marching forward without regard for danger, and this predictable behavior becomes the foundation of the game’s challenge. Success depends on understanding their movement patterns, anticipating timing, and adjusting the environment just enough to ensure they reach the exit unscathed. Gameplay is intuitive but surprisingly deep. You interact with movable blocks, platforms, and terrain pieces, sliding them into place to create safe routes or divert the dodos away from traps. Because you cannot pause their movement or issue commands directly, many puzzles become exercises in planning and observation. Some levels ask you to rescue a specific number of dodos, others introduce collectible objectives, and later challenges test how long you can keep the birds alive in increasingly hostile layouts. This variety of objectives adds layers to the core mechanic and prevents the puzzle-solving from becoming monotonous. Visually, Save the Dodos embraces a bright, cartoon-like art style that complements its lighthearted tone. The dodos themselves are endearing in their simplicity, and their oblivious animations add humor even in moments of failure. Environments are clearly designed, with hazards and interactive elements easy to distinguish at a glance, which is crucial in a game where spatial awareness is key. While the graphics are not technically complex, they are cohesive and functional, supporting the gameplay without unnecessary distraction. The difficulty curve is well-paced, easing players in with straightforward early levels before gradually introducing more demanding scenarios. As the game progresses, puzzles require more precise timing and creative thinking, often encouraging experimentation and multiple attempts. While some later levels can be challenging and occasionally frustrating, failures rarely feel unfair, as the solutions are usually logical once discovered. This balance between accessibility and challenge makes the game suitable for both casual players and those who enjoy more methodical problem-solving. Additional modes and optional goals help extend the game’s replay value. Different rule sets and objectives encourage players to revisit earlier levels with new perspectives, while achievements and collectibles offer extra incentives for completionists. The soundtrack and sound effects remain understated, reinforcing the relaxed nature of the game and allowing players to focus on planning and execution rather than reacting to audio cues. That said, the game’s simplicity may not appeal to everyone. Players looking for narrative depth, character development, or fast-paced action may find the experience limited, as Save the Dodos is unapologetically focused on its core puzzle concept. The interface and overall presentation are functional rather than flashy, which can make it feel slightly dated in places, though this does little to undermine the quality of the level design itself. Overall, Save the Dodos succeeds by committing fully to its central idea and executing it with care and creativity. Its indirect control mechanics, clever level design, and playful tone combine to create a puzzle game that is both accessible and rewarding. For players who enjoy thoughtful, relaxed puzzle experiences with a unique twist, it offers hours of satisfying challenges and a lighthearted journey that proves even the most helpless creatures can be saved with a little ingenuity.
