OH MY GOD. This should be called sanity of gamers . Devs please tell me what you were thinking with this tunnel vision crap in the dark. It makes the game basically unplayable. this is not a game you want to play even for free.
This took a sudden turn to stupid. Also the constant self-narration of the character is very annoying.
Game glitched out at the very beginning in the house and I could not progress into the attic. Collected everything, collected the code and no matter what I did the game refused to progress. Refund requested
Sanity of Morris is an unchallenging, gentle horror with interesting environments to explore and a solid plot. It has a well-focussed story with a simple objective, straight-forward mechanics, and a good atmosphere. Will take approximately 4 unstressed hours to complete your first time around. Gameplay boils down to using your torch to clear obstacles, finding items to open doors/change your environment, and using stealth to avoid enemies as you search for your missing father in strange, alien locations while seeking the truth about the role of a mysterious government agency. Goods

The atmosphere is great. The music and sound design are a big plus.
The voice acting is top notch.
The plot is good and the level of attention given to building a timeline and searching out information is compelling.
The puzzles were okay (but you should expect to find clues/puzzle elements out of order which can be a little confusing). It would’ve been nice to see more variation and more use of hidden clues/pointers – not to solve puzzles, but just because it was a neat mechanic that was under-utilised.
Environmental story-telling was well done and consistently used.
Bads

The “scares” are too frequent, aren’t actually scary, and get very predictable.
The sanity mechanic felt a bit pointless.
Visual effects are overdone and distracting. I adjusted settings but blurs and blooms still made it difficult to investigate some environments.
The stealth mechanic is fine. It isn’t too frustrating although sometimes you can stroll by multiple enemies without any issues while at other times, enemies spot you across a room before you know they’re even there. Check points are generous though so it’s easy to learn and move on. Does break immersion.
Uglies

A handful of bugs, but nothing too game breaking.
The plot didn’t feel as though it resolved fully. There were some elements left hanging and the final “choice” didn’t seem to add anything. There didn’t seem to be any ambiguity about what was happening. If there was, it didn’t change or influence the story in a meaningful way.
Cutscene animations are awkward and goofy.
You must use your torch to highlight some items to interact with them. This seems at odds with a stealth game, especially when there are multiple enemies nearby. Can make it easy to miss things if you’re not forewarned.
I originally played the demo I was given a couple years ago, it seemed okay at the time and I was very interested in where the story was going. Fast forward to now where I saw it in my to review list and was like sure I finally play this one. I definitely wasn't disappointed by the story but I was by everything else, it had been two years and the game didn't even feel updated from the demo I played. Pros: + Great voice acting + Really interesting story that keeps you thinking by the end + Kinda interesting puzzle mechanics + The paintings at the start of the game were creepy and really freaked me out for a bit Cons: - Enemies were boring and very glitchy, some killed me through walls some spawned in walls - Every time I died I got spawned in front or behind an enemy, one time it happened 3 times and I died instantly until it decided it couldn't see me - The horror was good if it worked but it only worked once or twice, I got freaked out by a child on a staircase but most of the time I missed the jumpscare and only saw the poof of smoke afterward - The item jumpscares were really really bad, hald the time the jumpscare wasn't even facing me and it should be on every pickupable item in the game because it got boring quickly and I decide to stop picking things up - It takes a good 5 seconds of waiting before you actually pick up items - The cutscenes and quick time events were really wonky and were just weird in general - The flashlight had a tunnel vision to it which made the first area incredibly difficult to search through - you can only interact with things when your flashlight is on - The game doesn't pause properly so you need to make sure you are in a safe location and have your flashlight on while reading the journal Full Playthrough & Review: https://youtu.be/XtghMaNle-8 Steam Curator Page: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/10995314-Szamer%2527s-Collection/
Man, I really, really wanted to post a positive review of this one because the preview footage that I saw before playing made Sanity of Morris like it could be a cool romp in the vein of a video game X-Files. Aliens and UFOs are a topic that most exploration/stealth horror games won't touch with a ten foot pole and I'll certainly give SOM credit in the initial plot set-up for giving it a shot. While the game isn't all bad, there's enough technical problems and 2nd half stumbles that prevent me from recommending it. Like a similar lukewarm (for me) horror title that I badly wanted to enjoy earlier in the year by the name of Intruders; Hide and Seek, I just can't really push picking this one up for horror purists. Things get off to a well enough start. Your dad sends you a nutty ass letter and on your way to visit him you get run off the road by G-men and hunted down like the dog you are in a race to find pop's house. This initial chapter and set-up is pretty solid. Things starts off after some stealthing and quick-timing your way through the woods and you're set to do some sleuthing to figure out the secrets hidden in your family home. Mechanics here aren't perfect and there were a couple of FPS drops but I enjoyed figuring out the minor puzzles and uncovering plot points in the house. You'll learn that focusing your flashlight discovers secrets and triggers events in a faux-Alan Wake manner as things go from bad to worse as you detect your way to the entrance of an alien hide-out. Man do things go downhill from here. (WARNING; THERE IS SOME MINOR DEGREE OF SPOILERS INCOMING, UNWITTING EYES SHOULD LOCK THEMSELVES INTO THEIR OWN PRIVATE AREA 51 OR HOWARD HUGHES TOWER). Lord almighty is that second area in the hideout a technical disaster zone full of stuttering FPS, hard to navigate tunnels and lots of stealth. The stealth unravels big time in this place. You'll also have to contend with avoiding falling to your death as well, while scouring for eyesore spots to use your flashlight for progression purposes (both in terms of ho-hum puzzles and figuring out WTF you're goin', champ). It just felt miserable to accomplish these tasks with technical glitching up the wazoo on a graphically high-end computer. I'd have refunded it but think I crossed the 2 hour mark and it almost became a personal vendetta to soldier on and see if things, hopefully, got better. They didn't all the way till the game's end, if you'd like the climax of the exciting story I've told you thus far. I fell through the map on solid ground at least twice and got more and more irritated that the stealth was completely random and I was getting seen through objects. It just never gelled in the gameplay department. I will say that had the hideout part been technically better executed, it would have been straight out of The Arrival when Charlie Sheen discovered the Mexican radio station he picked up on his comms dish was a literal alien stronghold. SOM reminds me of that fun B-flick several times throughout but it just never has the design or gameplay to hold up its notions. That's not to say, I had an odd attraction to a few parts. I'm not a Unity expert and maybe they were assets but I liked the alien design and the general atmosphere of the environments. It's not a great looking game yet its grimy, lo-fi thrills suit the story. The sound and voice-acting is done competently enough as well, although I'll agree with what others said; that main character needs to stick a sock in it from time to time. There are so many flashes of what SOM could be throughout that makes you yearn for what it isn't and aggravated by what it is. For achievement hunters and completion nuts, it's pretty easy to 100 percent this if you're a self-loather like me that sometimes has to tear up on an irritating game from head to toe just to laugh about doing it later. I know, I know, I recommended (lightly) Follia; Dear Father and Today is my Birthday but something about their 80s gore-movie cliches and fairly fast pacing made them entertaining to me (they also had some degree of minor combat and the feel of more authentic survival horror). They also both miraculously ran better than old crotchety Morris and co. too. As rough as this review remains, I do believe this developer has the beginning tools to do some cool work in the horror genre. I'm into the idea, the overall plot, the set-up and the whole deal of getting almost accidentally lost in an alien compound. It was even kinda neat that a light mechanic came into play on the puzzles. But the technical snafus for a game that shouldn't challenge any PC past 2005 puts a huge damper on what coulda woulda shoulda been an interesting, atypical horror outing. I paid full price of this 'cause....aliens, though I'm going to caution you to watch your wallet. But I do think the developer's had a great idea here, so I'll hope they'll use my $15 to finance a much better game that I actually think is within their capabilities.
Perfect for a Halloween night! This is a neat little Indie-Horror title with elements of exploration and stealth. Divided in three parts Sanity of Morris can easily be finished within 3-4 hours, including collectibles. The game does a great job at level design and progression, it's not the greatest or most innovative game ever, but it has a good pacing, switches up the gameplay just the right amount so it doesn't get boring, but it's also not a very challenging game. Given the fact that it is about aliens, taking the story seriously is a little difficult sometimes, but I feel this is on purpose. The team clearly tried to make an homage to other titles that were the OGs of the genre. Similarities to F.E.A.R., Half life and Prey can be found everywhere and it just works as a nostalgic trip. If you're not expecting the best game ever, yet are in for a devent one-sitting horror-experience this is the game for you. And for 1.50$ on sale it's basically a steal.
