Another entry in the sad virus franchise. This time it's more of a conventional platformer. As always, you collect bottles of beer and that's literally it. The game takes about 10 minutes to finish. One major complaint I have is that pressing R sets you back all the way to the beginning, which means the checkpoints are useless when you fall down to the ground level. Making the floor lava, implementing fall damage or simply reworking how the restart button functions would do the trick.
Sad Virus Up & Up is a lighthearted indie platforming adventure developed by Tero Lunkka and published by Valkeala Software. Continuing the quirky concept of the Sad Virus series, the game places players in control of a gloomy virus character whose mission is surprisingly simple: climb ever higher through a dangerous environment while collecting beer bottles that restore his happiness. The premise is intentionally unusual and embraces a playful sense of absurdity, creating a casual experience that focuses on exploration and platforming rather than storytelling or complex mechanics. The game's structure revolves around upward progression. Every section encourages players to move higher into the level while overcoming a variety of obstacles designed to test timing and movement skills. The challenge comes not from enemies or combat, but from environmental hazards scattered throughout the world. Moving spikes, rolling objects, jump pads, and rotating platforms create a steady stream of platforming sequences that require concentration without becoming overwhelmingly difficult. This design makes the game approachable for players who enjoy simple reflex-based challenges. Collecting the nine beer bottles serves as the primary objective and gives purpose to exploration. Rather than rushing directly to the end, players are encouraged to search carefully and investigate each area. The collectibles are tied to achievement completion, adding extra value for players who enjoy earning every accomplishment available. Since the overall gameplay loop is straightforward, the hunt for bottles becomes the driving force behind progression and encourages a more thorough examination of the environment. One of the game's more forgiving features is its checkpoint system. Falling into traps or making a poorly timed jump does not result in major setbacks, as players can quickly continue from previously reached checkpoints. This helps maintain a relaxed pace and prevents frustration from overshadowing the experience. The system is especially useful during later sections where hazards become more frequent and platforming sequences demand greater precision. Visually, Sad Virus Up & Up adopts a simple 3D presentation that prioritizes gameplay functionality over graphical complexity. The environments are colorful and surreal, fitting the strange personality of the series. While the visuals may not compete with larger-budget platformers, they successfully create a playful atmosphere that complements the game's unusual premise. The focus remains firmly on navigating obstacles and reaching new heights rather than delivering a technically impressive showcase. The game is at its best when approached as a small-scale indie adventure designed for short play sessions. Its uncomplicated controls, clear objectives, and accessible challenge level make it easy to pick up and enjoy. Players looking for deep narratives, advanced mechanics, or extensive content may find the experience somewhat limited, but those seeking a casual platforming journey with a quirky sense of humor are more likely to appreciate what it offers. Ultimately, Sad Virus Up & Up succeeds by delivering exactly the kind of experience it sets out to provide. It offers a straightforward climb through a hazard-filled world, supported by collectible hunting, forgiving checkpoints, and simple platforming mechanics. The game's modest scope prevents it from standing out as a major genre entry, but its charm, accessibility, and focused design make it a pleasant diversion for fans of indie platformers and achievement-driven exploration.
