From the creators of the cult classic No Thing, Sad RPG follows in the same aesthetic style with a new game play loop. There is classic RPG mechanics for battling anxiety attacks, as well as No Thing-esq levels in your TV or PC. I have not completed the game, but so far I am liking what I see.
I wish I could recommend this game as it's a great and unique concept. The bugs are making it unplayable, I can't progress any further from day 2. SAD I have to let it go for now
The beginning of the game is awesome! And in the future.. if this game gets a full release it will be aswsome! Till now.. it has a lot of bugs and sound glitches and makes it kinda hard to say: go play it now. Maybe but it on whishlist and wait for future updated or the full release. . c:
This review isn't gonna be like the other reviews I write as it's a small game. All in all, I'm not sure how to feel about this game. I have social anxiety myself. It's nowhere near bad enough that it's a disorder. But I could look at some elements in the game, and genuinely connect with it. Like the portrait with a clown on it? Man, that hit hard. I think the game was trying to be a set-piece game of sorts where emphasis is given to the environment, and how we perceive it. For example, the anxiety attacks, which occur as turn-based RPG fight sequences, happen if you're doing something that isn't "by the book" from a social norm standpoint. Like walking in the middle of the road. At least, this is what I can tell, but I may be wrong about this. All that being said, the execution could've been way better. Clearly the game's abandoned, so there's no hopes for the game getting any better than it really is right now, so I can't in good conscience recommend getting it in the first place. You're often bombarded with these random encounters with weird faces. It's like the entire floor is the grass from Pokemon, and you have no idea if taking another step will trigger a fight. And I've had to play through four fights back to back. Sure, you could finish those fights easily if you keep your SP up and have enough to use your Skill Attacks, but the point is it's an annoyance, and does nothing than to frustrate the player for the sake of it. Considering just how buggy it is, there's no way to progress through the game. Sequences where you walk along a single path that zig-zags its way across the Unity-ass looking scene are riddled with bugs. They also don't make sense; what is it trying to convey to the player, from a thematic standpoint? And how does forcing the player to restart from the beginning, with zero checkpoints to keep them from losing all their progress, supposed to encourage them to play further and progress in the game? These questions are left unanswered, and do more harm than good. It's ironic how a game that intends to raise awareness about social anxiety is left to itself, forever silent and without any help. I do love the music beats, though.
i have to wonder if this has now been abandoned. i appear to have been removed from the Discord server or it was entirely shut down, the link doesn't work for it anymore and their twitter page is dead. which is very ...SAD if you ask me. would not recommend in the state it is currently in, unfortunately.
really hurt my head :(
I've been waiting for this game for SO LONG! But it's broken, like it will waste your progress.
kinda buggy
Those who enjoy 'weird' games may enjoy this, though those with actual social anxiety disorder may find it crass and borderline-insulting. The developers presumably wanted to make a genuine point - that social anxiety disorder is exhausting and debilitating - but the tone comes across more as mockery than sympathy. But that's just my impression. As an actual game, there is little to really interest the mind. Battles are annoying, the day-glo aspect of the graphics is ugly and off-putting, and the music and electronically generated narrator's voice are dehumanising. Overall, more depressing than fun - but maybe that's the point.
Upd.
