Van Gogh, What kind of wild and crazy battles have you had to deal with?
To start off I love the art, music, story and ideas of this game however its just the game-play itself. Most things well telegraphed for the most part, but the bosses have too much health, the input lag is far too much, plus there needs to be some type of roll or dash. If not that the shield needs to block all damage. Also the final boss's 3rd stage having unavoidable poison damage in the air is total BS. I love most things about this game and I hope the dev sees this and fixes the game-play so i can fully love it.
The game has great visuals, the idea of a Van Gogh based boss rush is really original and adds a lot of character and there's clearly a lot of love put into making it. Sadly, that's pretty much all the positives, because the flaws pile up really quickly and drag down the experience: · Your only real defensive options are walking slowly and blocking, the latter one doesn't even reduce the damage that much until you unlock an upgrade so it's fairly useless. · The offensive tools are equally bad, mostly because they're tied to long cooldowns and can't be manually activated. This turns most fights into spamming normal attacks and trying to get some lucky hits from the skills without much results. The one spell that CAN be used manually deals even less damage than a regular attack and can only be used 3 times in a fight. . There's no I-Frames. AT ALL. Any attack that lingers will stunlock you, with some particularly egregious examples where getting hit is an instakill. . The only healing comes from hitting the boss at very low hp with the good old regular attacks and more often than not gets you killed. . The later bosses turn into really long fights with no checkpoints or recovery, which makes learning the patterns frustrating as you're forced to repeat time and time again the easy early phases of the fight. . This all combines for a especially terrible final boss: a 3 phase endurance fight without checkpoints, where the boss spends most of the time completely out of your reach, uses only attacks with huge areas of effect and (for the last phase) you're taking constant poison damage. Even then it has its beloved horse attack, if it decides to use it at a bad time it's basically an instant game over as you get stunlocked to death.
Absolutely wonderful tribute to Van Gogh. The visual part is beautiful, the animations are better than I was expecting even if they feel a little cheap sometimes. The gameplay feels a little janky but it's fun and you never feel confused even though the game doesn't give you tutorials on each of the individual gimmicks. It's an amazing experience for it's price and I heavily recommend it.
Liked: - Unique and coherent artstyle - Creative and varied boss designs - Honest but inspiring story Disliked: - Controls can feel a bit clunky sometimes - Short

This is a really good game that should be known by more people. It has a really basic but fine combat system, with jumping as your main evade option (but it doesn't have i-frames), blocking(that reduces damage) a normal attack and some abilities and buffs to unlock along the way (you unlock an ability after every boss except the final one, so by the end you'll have 8 of them). The game is classified as a souslike because it is hard (keep that in mind before buying, it isn't a chill game, but it has an easy mode) but it is a boss rush so it hasn't got areas with enemies, shortcuts, bonfires and it hasn't got a estus flask or i frames or a dodge roll. The game is kind of short (normal mode took me somwhere under 9 hours and there are only 9 bosses), but I didn't mind . As you have probably seen it has a really good artstyle. The sountrack is decent, nothing unexceptional but it fits the mood and atmosfere of the game. To me the game is worth its price. Keep in mind that while I'll be talking about negative aspects of the game they are rather nitpicks But it isn't flawless the biggest issue is that while most of the attacks can be avoided with walking or jumping it is sometimes nessesary to block, which only reduces damage, it is a big amount, but still it is annoing (and there is no parry in this game), there are also no healing options apart from one boss and life steal (which only occurs below like 20% hp). The lifesteal ability should for example work when above 20% hp but at half its power, so you could regain hp that you lost to a block. The second thing is that the hard mode isn't really that fair or balanced and some bosses will throw at you attack almost impossible to dodge or horribly mismatched to how the boss works. I played it whole and it wasn't mostly fun. I said it is not really a big issue because it is a hardest difficulty, and as we now they sometimes are like that, and it is an optional content, but that does not make it better. The third thing is really small but It would be good if the game allowed you to block while in the air because you'll be jumping a lot (as a dodge or jump attack), and this game's jump is a bit slow. Also most of the abilities felt underwhelming, they could miss easily delt 3xnormal attack damage and they had cooldown of over half a minute(scream from hell, venus drop) or you had 3 uses(crow attack)
"Starry Knight" is really an odd game: You play Van Gogh himself as a "knight" fighting his internal struggle of his artist-career defeating boss after boss in stylised canvases of his own creation. The art is top notch (for it is basically a sample of Van Gogh's art) and the sound has a somber and emotional tone to it. Gameplaywise it is quite a challenge, for your blocking abilities negate only some of the damage and it can be clunky, forcing you to be patient and read attack patterns that can be really against your odds. This makes this somewhat exhausting, but still manageable in the intended difficulty (cannot vote for NG+ because I tried it, but it really packs a punch) It is tagged as "Souls-Like", but this can be deceiving, because it is more likely a 2D boss-fighter with a new skill unlock after each battle. Not the best game in this genre but definetly one of the most unique and intruiging!
