Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/3u3llUz5uYA Since this game is now free to play, I can easily recommend it. One of the better free to play games on the Steam store. Starts out pretty epic, but it ends up lacking due to the lack of polish and the lack of content. Feels like a prologue to an epic game, one that doesn't exist. This is a narrative driven, mostly puzzle game with some magical combat thrown in there. I highly recommend changing the default locomotion method as quickly as you can. There is full / free locomotion and snap turning available. This game had a lot of potential. It has a nice story, but it just ends abruptly as it is starting to get good. Game was a little over 3 hours long for me. Please note: I already completed the game on the Oculus store. I only put enough minutes on Steam so that I could write this review. Rate 7.5/10.
Please consider joining my Steam Curator Group. Although heavily unpolished, I enjoyed the two hours I spent on Runes. The puzzle segments had me look up a tutorial because the way I was trying to solve the puzzle would always make the psychics engine freak out. In hindsight, they were very simple and rewarding puzzles. One thing I wished there was more of was combat. There was a small combat segment at the end, however as you unlock runes in the game they always use enimes as targets but it feels like a lot of buildup for very little reward. Some gripes i have with the game is that there is no native joystick support. On top of that, in order to turn around you would have to go into their 'astral projection mode' rotate the little ghost character that pops out of you and then get out of it in order to rotate. This system is very clunky at best and confusing at worse. A simple rotation system that i found used to great effect is just allowing the player to rotate with the press of a button. Think how VRchat handles rotation. TLDR: Although if this game wasn't free I would have picked it up for a couple of dollars. Dont expect much though as its two hours of puzzle segments and a small bit of combat at the end. It feels like the game wants to be puzzle segments broken up with segments of combat, but its just puzzles. If you end up playing this average game, I hope you love puzzles.
The story is straight crazy in a good way. The voice acting is great with few shortcomings. The main character's voice is similar to Garret from Thief. It feels like it is going to be a cheap pos game from the intro but then you get into the house which is your main hub area and it is like an escape room. It is a blast from there. The end battle is unforgiving but doable and has invisible checkpoints so it isn't so bad when you die a lot. ( I recommend you hold a giant rock as a shield and fireball everything until only the giants are left and then take them out with the rocks) There is possibly a second ending since you are faced with a choice ,where you can do nothing or do what you are being told, which I will be looking up after writing this. Overall, it is a really fun game and should not be ignored.
For free, it's definitely a fun experience provided you have a decent VR setup. It has a lot of different options for traversal that made it enjoyable even with my the small space I have and there were a lot of interesting ideas here. My favorite was the stuff involving the drawers. If an alchemy game was made centered around just making stuff with them with some extra steps before or after creation, I'd happily buy it. That said, the spell casting is sometimes a little awkward, the movement sometimes glitches a bit, and the graphics are just okay (though it wasn't enough to bother me). Still a good amount of fun for a free game. Note: If an item gets stuck in something else, grab it and teleport out to move it.
It's old, and it's janky, but it's fascinating and reasonably well written. It's very atmospheric, and (as far as i have gotten) the puzzles have been very entertaining (very escape room-y). Also, at least at the time of writing it's free! In the context of which this is just an amazing game.
