I've only used it for a few minutes, but, it doesn't support hexes, so it's not useful to me. A soft "maybe, in the future" answer for hexes doesn't help, as, if I don't return it now, I'm out $30+ and may never get a ROI. So, if you're looking at this for games that aren't D&D you might want to look somewhere else. Like Talespire before it, it's (currently) married to the square grid, which means it's only good for those games.
Thank you to the developers for the tremendous work. After a long search, I finally found a product that surprisingly meets all my needs. I’ve watched many dev diaries and presentations about this project, and it’s clear how much effort and care went into it. Special thanks for the isometric view, multi-level building, the high degree of customization, and especially for allowing commercial use of exports. Many of these features are sorely missing in other similar VTTs.
Great GM tool... dont understand all the bad reviews. You can basically build anything... wish there was a plain level tool though.
I switched from TTS to RPGS and I could not be happier. Honestly, everyone should check out this amazing VTT.
great for DND campaign
Ottimo!
[EN] Great software. Personally, I don’t use it for the actual tabletop sessions, but strictly for map creation and exporting to Foundry VTT. While I used it a bit for my D&D 3.5 campaign, its real strength lies in Modern and Sci-Fi settings. I am currently using it for a Shadowrun 5 campaign on Foundry to build city districts, roads, and bars. While the grid alignment during export isn't perfect, it’s manageable. I’ve easily created a parking lot, a market alley with stalls, and my latest project: a road designed to simulate a chase scene using parallax in Foundry. Pros: VTT Export Support: Supports .uvtt files for Foundry and Roll20. Upscale Options: Support for x2 and x4 resolution during export. Multi-level Support: Handles verticality well. Solid Asset Library: A decent selection of objects. Fast Placement Brush: Very efficient for quick detailing. Cons: Grid Alignment: The exported grid is sometimes slightly off. No Video Export: Unlike Dungeon Alchemist, there is no native video output. No Asset Import: Though this feature is expected in a future update. Final Note: I own many map-making tools—Dungeon Alchemist, Dungeondraft, Campaign Cartographer 3, Wonderdraft, Canvas Of Kings, Flowscape, Dystopika, and RPG Map Editor 2. However, when it comes to Cyberpunk, Shadowrun, Modern, or Sci-Fi, it's often hard to find exactly what I need. RPG Stories isn't perfect yet, but it’s a huge help for these specific genres.
Great for building your ttrpg world, can't wait for the mobile app.
Update: The devs got my message about the missing demo in germany and they fixed it in just one day! This is support! Thank you so much guys!
UPDATE: I've updated this review from a while back. The product has promise but it's a complete struggle to reconcile the effort of moving a table to use this system when the value proposition falls flat against every other product that returns on it's promises for one flat cost. RPGS does a great deal, but figuring out what you've purchased and what your features are, and the kickstarter versus non-kickstarter features feels more like infinite cash-grabs than infinite worlds. That would be ok, if the features being offered in the cash grabs were not the very features that actually make it competitive with it's peers. Sadly, you can get everything offered here, and you are only likely to use or need a small portion of it, for the same or less elsewhere. Dungeon Alchemist is still the goat at just making awesome exportable maps. The web VTTs are still what most tables are using. The technical issues are definitely infinite, but my time, money, and patience for game prep to get dismissed with 10 seconds of "oh cool" followed by three hours of "it's not working for me" is not infinite. It's a good product with a very specific use case and a marketing strategy that looks like a self-inflicted gunshot wound. I've had this thing for a year and week to week no one at my online table seems to care that I'm not using it. I just stream a 3D view of Dungeon Alchemist in Discord and they are infinitely happy with that. No software download on their part, no seat purchases or port forwarding, and with just a stream it works on their crappy chromebooks and mobile devices. RPGS isn't that simple. I just can't make effective use of RPG Stories and the circumstances that I think might change that are always just a nickel out of reach. The fact that the competition has updated it's features and returned greater at little to no additional cost over the same time period isn't helping the situation at all. As a full featured 3D VTT it's good, but for the price Talespire delivers at least the same for less IMHO. Perhaps the most recent expansion for RPGS changes that equation for some of you, but is it worth another 20 to 100 bucks to find out? I'm guessing it's probably not. RPGS is the pretty girl with expensive taste that my friends all hate. She looks great, but she can't cook and she doesn't like any of your friends or hobbies and wants to change you into someone you don't want to be. I'm ending this toxic relationship. You do you. Original review below from about a year ago: Pros: - RPG Stories returns a tremendous value for your money when compared against other products in this field. It can do just about everything Talespire, Dungeon Alchemist, Foundry, Owlbear Rodeo and Roll20 can do fresh out of the box. It does it all fairly well and in some instances much better. - The assets library and assets and demos available in the community are fairly plentiful. - RPG Stories is not pigeon-holed into only supporting fantasy. Sci-Fi, horror, Cyberpunk and modern assets are plentiful and everything is done with a very realistic style. -The ability to export to UVTT format and import 2D assets can transform this into a pretty cool 2D VTT with 3D VFX and assets. -The journal feature and scene setting, along with a built in fog of war, allow you to make full modules and run them all from one program. Players can join in with a demo version if you host as the GM. The UI experience is fairly intuitive. You won't want to claw your eyeballs out trying to figure out how to do anything like you would in Fantasy Grounds Unity. Cons: - While RPG Stories can do just about everything, there are a few things it can't do or doesn't do as well as other platforms. - As a map builder, RPG Stories is great, one of the best in class even, but it is slightly outclassed by Dungeon Alchemist for making maps. Granted, DA is NOT a full featured VTT and doesn't really do anything but maps. Since RPG stories has it's own procedural map builder, the comparison must be made. The biggest gap between DA and RPGS in this regard is the inability to raise terrain. You can get there in RPG stories through the clever use of assets, but it's not as graceful as DA. - RPGS doesn't really have great audio support. This is common for the genre, but you'll find yourself needing Discord or something else to coordinate with others. Overall I highly recommend the product. I will be transitioning my next campaign from the current tech stack of four different platforms to just RPGS and Discord. This was a great grab.
