I think Musasabi is too short to be considered a "hidden gem" (it's only about an hour long and priced accordingly), but if you're a fan of platformers with unique movement mechanics I would strongly recommend grabbing it anyway. Folks who are into speedrunning should also take interest, as mastery of the game should be a nice challenge. Once I had a firm handle on controlling Risu at around the halfway point, It felt great jumping, climbing, and gliding around the levels. I just wish there were a little more to it. There's only one difficulty level and you'll probably have all 8 achievements by the time you finish the game for the first time. Once that's done, there's nothing left to do. But for just $3 that's not much of a complaint.
Summary:
(longer version below) Fun and relatively unique, however it falls short in some aspects where they try to pad out more content by just making it tediously long and hard because of enemy spam. It is very short, still has a few bugs but if you can get it really cheap, and if you're a fan of platformers, it's worth the 2 or so hours of gameplay.
In-Depth:
Overall this game is not bad. When I initially played it, I was not overly satisfied. On my second attempt the next day, I started enjoying it. They fixed some prominent issues and I started clearing levels. Initially you might struggle with the controls and the movement of the character but once you get used to it you will be able to finish levels much faster. I hate water movement, though, which generally ends up with me swimming into spikes. Despite the relative fun I had in the start it began to get repetitive. There are only two enemy types that just change appearance and become faster in each area. Traps or spawners are purposely put around gems to increase risk. Maps can become too long and big making it stupidly hard to finish, for all the wrong reasons. Enemies can shoot projectiles through walls, some hit detection is messed up, the camera may bug out sometimes and I noticed bombs explode but enemies disappear on a delay. My main complaints are that gnomes don't chase you, but they bounce to and from you, often forcing you to run after them and receive damage in a dire attempt to heal by picking up hearts that are SOMETIMES dropped by them (making it useless when they drop nothing). You have no invincibility frames so damage sources stack, meanwhile bosses have way too many of them. Specifically referring to the obnoxious ice golem.
Cute little platformer. Has a good tutorial explaining how to play, still it takes getting used to the controls.
Es bastante divertido. Excelente juego.
Fun little game, although there is not much of a replay value at the moment, for the price is alright as it keeps you entertained for quite a bit.
Musasabi brings the feeling and entertainment of the old NES games. Starting with some comprehensive tutorials to get the control feels, and once you get the drill, the game start to brings the fun and the challenge of Old good plataformer games. Its a game suitable for casual players looking for a small challenge and for hardcore speed runners.
Good retro style game, different mechanics and adorable protagonist. ^_^
Fun Game with retro feeling, non stop action and a good challenge.
Musasabi is a decent little platform game with a twist. Your objective is to collect diamonds to progress onto the next level. You play a squirrel and its pretty good fun from what I’ve played so far. What I like about it that sets it apart from other platform games if that you’re able to scale walls and ceilings which adds a great element of fun. The game starts off giving you decent clear instructions for controls and objectives and I like the graphics because they have a that lovely 16-Bit retro feel to them giving sharp and crisp sprites with some pretty cool backing music. I was a little disappointed about the screen resolution, you can’t change it on my setup or change to window mode, and it’s just full screen or nothing, which isn’t a big problem but something I’d of like to see. As you start the game, the first thing you’ll notice is you can save little friendly units on each level and these appear quite a bit, and when you save one you get some extra health, which is certainly going to be needed and you progress through the game. Yes, things start to get more and trickier like you’d expect from this sort of game like more spikes appearing and more intelligent enemies. You can take 2-3 hits per level before you die and when you die the level restarts so it’s best try to avoid all the bad and save all the good. I do like the game a lot, one thing I’m not keen on are enemy units “BATS” these things are infuriating, you can’t see to escape them once they lock onto you, it would have been nice if the DEV had added maybe a little speed boost after each hit you take to help you escape these situations, or perhaps, give the player an extra second of invulnerability to escape them. Other than that Musasabi is a pretty cool game and I feel it has its own identity in the massively overstocked steam market. The game also features achievements which is brilliant and game controller support, however this I have not tested as I only played with AWSD and space.. In all I rate this game 7-10. It’s a decent fun platform game which is easy to control and understand, just those bloody bats! Massive thank you to the DEV for allowing me to test the game before its release. It’s extremely appreciated. All parts of this review are copyrighted and you may not repost, copy or paste any part to any other website without permission.
