This game looks cutesy but is actually pretty metal. Has helped me learn how to play so that I can play the physical game.
Don't let the theme fool you - this is a very complicated game. Really well-tuned for four players, if said players are complex board game fanatics.
It's good! There's a very steep learning curve to initially learning the mechanics of the game, and another learning curve for each new faction you play afterwards. I wish the Clockwork were playable, but as is they're kind of a fun thing to try and team up against as an alternative to the usual AI. It's not really worth buying if you want to play this game online, because nearly all servers are password locked, but finding friends to play it with or play the challenges by yourself gives you enough play time. The only genuine negatives I have are some of the pricing and general bugs. All bugs I've encountered have been visual bugs, usually involving soldiers sticking out of the clearing and into the forest, when the Woodland Alliance trains an officer your whole screen may get flashed by the icon, some of the cards can flash multiple colors when thrown into the discard pile, and various other little things. Nothing game-breaking though. Some of the pricing is questionable, like charging $9.99 for the soundtrack. Normally, that'd be fine, but it only has five songs in it (at least from what they've stated in the description), and two of them are below a minute. If they'd at least update it with the new map soundtracks, and the Riverfolk Company main menu music then I could see it being closer to that price. I bought the game and nearly all of the expansions from the Steam Summer sales, but if you buy it for normal pricing I'd say you'd have to really want it. Especially, since some of the challenges are gonna put you through the wringer. I'd also hope I'd get more for completing the challenges, rather than a little checkmark for completion.
Great game. Though it can be complicated, it's very faction oriented but very fun if you can master one or two of them.
awesome board game put into digital form. i highly recommend getting the DLC's once you're REALLY comfortable with the mechanics of each base game factions and know how to play each of them accordingly. should you enjoy it to great extent, try to get your hands on a physical copy of the game. hell, maybe pay again for the physical expansion packs. Betray your friends for coniferous fame and glory! or make alliances with them.... the choice is yours in the critter infested world of ROOT!
