🔧 Update (March 6, 2026) The developer responded to this review and quickly addressed three technical issues mentioned in my original review. After replaying the game, I can confirm that the placeholder background has been removed, the Steam achievements now trigger correctly, and the menu freeze I experienced during my first playthrough has not occurred again. I appreciate the developer responding so quickly and taking the feedback seriously. The rest of the review below still reflects my thoughts on the story, writing, and overall scope of the game. 💬 Supportive Caveat Updated: Room 304 is a very small visual novel that initially launched with a few technical issues, but the developer responded quickly and addressed them soon after release. Those issues have since been fixed. 🎮 Gameplay & Genre Room 304 is a very short boys’ love visual novel centered around dorm life and light relationship choices. A full playthrough of both routes takes well under an hour. The structure is simple: you share a dorm room with two potential love interests and choose which one to spend time with over the course of four in-game days. There are two endings and four CG illustrations to unlock. The branching choices are straightforward and replaying to see the alternate route is quick. Updated: Steam achievements are included and are straightforward to unlock. 🔥 M/M Content The game features two male love interests: Ian, a shy and anxious twink-type roommate, and Erick, a more confident athletic jock. The protagonist sits somewhere between them visually. Romantic content is extremely mild, closer to PG than PG-13. The CGs focus on emotional closeness and kissing rather than anything sexually suggestive. There is no nudity and no explicit content. 🎨 Visuals & Style Character sprites are well made and expressive and are easily the strongest visual element of the game. The character designs fit the soft BL tone nicely and carry much of the emotional presentation. The music was also a pleasant surprise. The soundtrack is atmospheric and fits the dorm setting well, adding mood in a way that many small visual novels at this price point simply do not bother with. 🗣️ Tone & Writing The story unfolds over four days and moves quickly through the relationship beats. Because of this short timeline, the emotional development feels rushed. The protagonist is also written as somewhat emotionally closed off, which he explicitly frames as a way to protect himself. That could have been an interesting character angle, but the game does not spend enough time exploring it or showing meaningful change regardless of the route chosen. The cursed-room rumor is referenced throughout and is clearly meant to be the story’s hook, but it never fully coalesces into something convincing or emotionally weighty. The script leans on characters repeating the premise more than building a reason to believe it, so the “curse” ends up feeling oddly flat. 👍 Best Thing The character sprites and surprisingly good atmospheric music help give the game more personality than many visual novels at this price point. 👎 Worst Thing Updated: The biggest weakness is the lack of narrative depth. The characters, especially the protagonist, needed more development, and the cursed-room premise never becomes as compelling or emotionally weighty as it should. ⭐ Final Verdict Room 304 is a very small BL visual novel with decent character art and a surprisingly nice soundtrack, but the story and premise feel underdeveloped, which limits the experience even though the game’s technical issues were addressed quickly. That said, it is still better produced than many VNs in its price range. A quick, inexpensive read that could have been stronger with more polish and narrative depth I also curate a Steam page reviewing M/M games if you’re looking for more titles in this space: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45790038/
Premise This review reflects my personal experience with the game. While I aim to write thoughtfully and as fairly as possible, my reviews are subjective in nature and should not be used as objective metrics to assess/critique a game. In the story, you witness an extremely superficial level of emotional trauma and a semblance of connection between two strangers. On paper, I do not think the foundation of the story is terrible. There is enough there conceptually for a short emotional VN to work. The problem, however, is the execution. The writing feels heavily AI-generated and unfortunately, it becomes obvious very quickly. Dialogue constantly over-describes places, sacrificing the build-up of emotional momentum; instead of letting scenes breathe naturally, characters speak in strangely polished paragraphs and the sentence structures repeat themselves so often that conversations stop sounding human altogether. AI cannot humanise text well, therefore, it is hard to feel any attachments to characters whose dialogue sounds machine-generated. Because of that, I never connected with the protagonist or the relationship itself. Instead of becoming emotionally invested, I mostly found myself waiting for the game to end so I could finish the achievements and move on. I could add plenty of dialogue lines as an example, but I hardly believe that would serve any purpose. The pacing also damages the story significantly. The entire game lasts around 30 minutes for both routes combined and within that tiny amount of time, the VN expects you to believe two complete strangers fall deeply for one another while simultaneously unpacking serious psychological barriers and emotional trauma. None of it has enough space to develop properly. Relationships in VNs do not necessarily need to be realistic, but they do need emotional progression that feels believable inside their own world. Here, everything happens so quickly and superficially that the emotional scenes lose almost all impact. Representation — ★★☆☆☆ The game is clearly trying to present an emotional M/M relationship with vulnerability and intimacy at its center and I can appreciate the intention behind that. However, because the characters themselves feel underdeveloped, the relationship never becomes convincing enough for the emotional themes to land properly. Instead of feeling like two people slowly understanding one another, it feels more like the game jumping directly toward emotional payoff without earning it first. There are moments where the VN hints at something more thoughtful underneath everything, particularly regarding loneliness and emotional isolation, but the writing never digs deeply enough into those ideas. Gameplay — ★☆☆☆☆ This is an extremely basic VN with no additional mechanics or meaningful interaction beyond reading through scenes and making a few choices. Normally, short runtime alone would not bother me. Male Doll games, for example, are often short as well, but their format works better because they usually focus on platforming or action alongside their storytelling. A story-driven VN depends far more heavily on writing, pacing and emotional buildup. Without those elements feeling convincing, the lack of gameplay depth becomes much harder to overlook. There is simply not enough substance here to make the experience anywhere close to memorable. Art & Direction — ★★★☆☆ Visually, the game is decent enough. Character artwork and CGs are not bad and there are a few scenes (about 2) that visually communicate a level of intimacy. But again, presentation alone can only do so much. Good artwork cannot fully compensate for dialogue and emotional progression that never feel believable. The soundtrack remains fairly subtle throughout, though nothing particularly stood out to me after finishing the game. Do I recommend it? — ★★☆☆☆ Personally, no. I think Room 304 had the foundation for a much stronger short-form emotional VN, but the writing undermines almost everything the game is trying to achieve. The AI-like dialogue, rushed emotional pacing and lack of believable relationship development made it very difficult for me to connect with the experience. Short VNs absolutely can work. Some of the most memorable emotional stories I have played only lasted a couple of hours. But when your entire experience depends almost entirely on emotional writing, those conversations and relationships need to feel human. Unfortunately, this one never did for me. Don't want to give this a negative review because it's short and inexpensive but I'm going too anyway. I will say that I enjoy the character art sprites, it has a fitting soundtrack and the UI is really clean. However, the storyline is pretty poor. I bought it because the synopsis sounded like a pretty good premise for a Boys Love title. Except, you didn't even utilise your own plotline for anything. The game is literally called Room 304 and the 'cursed' Room meant nothing. It meant nothing to the main character, nothing to the storyline itself, near nothing to your roomies nor did it mean anything to ME as the player because there was no time for me to even connect to it. There was like 4 lines of dialogue about it across the whole game. A jock and a nerd were cast for the room mates, turns out the jock is soft-hearted with hidden vulnerabilities and the nerd has some hidden courage. Cliché trope that felt super flat to me and it never expanded on it. The story pacing was really off, I can't tell if this took place over 3 or 4 days because we only played in minor parts across the different days before it advanced to the next one. I also just met these people, there wasn't any flirting or romance so how do I suddenly feel for them.. why are we now kissing.. why is Erick talking about spending our lives together? The dialogue was really stiff to me, I know the developers are Brazilian so I imagine it was in Portuguese and later translated to English? but even if it wasn't, people don't talk to each other like this. It's hard to grasp the connection because it lacks any development. How does the main character now know who these people are but me playing the game doesn't. Game has a couple minor bugs too like flickering UI between character dialogue, text speed not working, having to click multiple times to advance some text. Is it Eric or Erick btw? let's make our mind up on that one. His ending CG had us wearing completely different outfits to what we had on. Sorry but this game is a hard pass for now.
The only thing that made it okay was the art, the rest is unfortunately very bottom of the barrel. The writing, like another review said, is very ai-generated and it's very obvious right off the rip. I did thankfully buy this expecting ♥♥♥♥, so I'm not disappointed, just upset that you can ruin a VN like this, please never use this as an example if you are to make a VN.
The cute short BL story!
I knew going in that this game is remarkably short. What I didn’t expect was the emptiness of the romance elements. The MC is just suddenly in love with whoever you pick, with no real character development of the MC.
Não é possível nem começar o jogo. Quando seleciono o idioma como Brazilian Portuguese e início um novo jogo, ele simplesmente não começa. Tentei tanto no PC, quanto no Steam Deck. Se mudo para Inglês, funciona normalmente.
