About ROMEO IS A DEAD MAN
Take control of the protagonist Romeo Stargazer in this third person singleplayer action adventure, split into various chapters. His story is both unpredictable and littered with intense battles, interspersed with side missions to suit the player's pace.
A story that transcends space-time
This game's story starts with space-time itself being shattered by a certain incident. Romeo, too, on the brink of life and death finds himself revived by a new kind of super technology. Thus he is recruited for the FBI's Space-Time Police as a special agent, and wanders the cosmos in search of criminals who've taken advantage of the situation at hand in an attempt to bring justice back to the universe. At the same time, he looks for clues concerning his missing girlfriend Juliet, and quickly comes to find both her disappearance and the destruction of space may be more linked than he thought. Donning the mask called Deadgear, what awaits Romeo at the edges of space-time?
Fight blood with blood
Romeo switches between swords and guns to fight. Wipe out the waves of enemies that stand in your path to give birth to a new kind of bloody action, and take down the fearsome space-time criminals that await. Absorb the blood of your enemies to unleash Romeo's special attack: Bloody Summer, capable of turning any situation around. Romeo's various weapons can be strengthened and altered as the story moves forward as he takes on even stronger enemies.

Suda51 at his finest

Cara, jogar esse jogo chapado é incrível KKKKKKKK. Que jogo bom!! Direção de arte incrível, jogabilidade gostosa. Melhor AA de 2026, fácil.
The game is freaking good, I love the music, I love the vibe the aura farm EVERYTHING. But it leaks memory on 9070XT leading to extreme slowdown every 10-20 minutes. I will just buy it on PlayStation. really sucks to be that way.
Looks incredible, sounds incredible, the references and fan service are great — and none of it saves the combat. Every enemy dies the same way: same combo, shoot the weak spot, repeat for the whole game. You can max your upgrades on farmed Emerald Flowsion in the first few hours and unlock all weapons, so there's no progression pull either. The story feels like chunks are missing on the way to a rushed ending. Feels like demo. Not recommended — but I hope the team keeps going.
Not even an hr in...this game is such a throwback. They really don't make a lot retro games like these anymore.
ROMEO IS A DEAD MAN is a somewhat fun but deal-breakingly shallow hack n' slash with some great experimental art and fantastic audiovisuals.
A lot of people are being gatekept by the game's systems, so I'll get some positives and rebuttals out of the way first - I think the amount of text the game throws at you is fine. I played on Milk Chocolate like a normal person initially, and you don't really need to worry about all that annoying stuff too much. I've seen other reviews that act like the game is ZORK, but really, you just have to deal with a lot of popups at the start and a couple later on. It is a bit disappointing that they tell rather than show, but that part isn't a dealbreaker for me. The game's art is fantastic in most places, and it largely seems like an experiment of some kind. It's a big mix of many different art styles that end up not clashing at all for the most part and instead come together to form a very unique retro sci-fi experience. I will, however, note that overreliance on these supplementary art styles takes away a lot of potential from the main game. There's a 3D model of Benjamin that you see once... at the start... He looks cool, I would've liked to have seen him some more. Graphical fidelity is great. I don't really care about that sort of stuff but it largely looks fantastic from a fidelity standpoint. Music is great. No elaboration needed. Wish there was more. Now, onto the negatives, of which this game has in troves...
The story.
Text bomb incoming, TLDR: The game and it's writing fail to support each other, and in fact work against each other in a terrible way. Listen, I know Suda51 has his own writing style. I know people play his games for it. But this is just complete nonsense? The entire time I was digging as deep as I could trying to find the metaphors and juicy content.. But there's just nothing? The major arc is insipid. Romeo learns nothing throughout the story and never demonstrates growth. No storyline is ever tied up. I could complain so much about it that I DID fill the character limit of this review. I'll keep my complaints about the regular villains to simply this: Two of them are essentially animals that represent a higher concept within the game's story - which even some keener people will never bother to comprehend because of how stifled the idea is next to the rest of the game. There are notes throughout the game that you can pick up that flat out explain what is going on in the world. Not in an implied, subtle way, the writer of said notes is just jotting the sht down for you. The final nail in the coffin is that these same notes EXPLAIN THE SAUCE OF THE STORY. Instead of figuring out what is going on with juliet, you pick up this bum ahh note, and Mr. Message in a Bottle over here talks about some "Well yes see the juliet situation is as follows: Blah blah blah blah" LIKE HELLO???? It's not that the game doesn't allow you to figure out what is going on. It's there, it's just so drowned out by every other negative the game has to offer, then the note ruins it. But I'll concede - MAYBE this is just Suda51's writing. Maybe I'm a tourist and I don't get it. Maybe I need to go replay all the other games and come back to let the story click. It's not an unreasonable concept to me. That being said, the vast, VAST majority of people will either need the game explained to them or will never even get close to absorbing the ACTUAL story because of how separate it is from the game itself, which I believe is a failure on the writing. They're supposed to work in tandem with each other, you're not supposed to be bored to death by what's going on in front of you and get repulsed enough to never want to figure the rest out. It should entice you, but it doesn't. It's like the irony is trying to hide everything else going on, unlike other games like NMH, where the irony is part of the flavour. Onto stuff I know about... The gameplay is sadly mid. It's a satisfying enough core loop - it feels okay to hit enemies, the special enemies have for the most part serviceable quirks. But the game feels so stiff to play that it becomes preferable for a lot of people to stick to the two weapons with the most agency and never experience the rest of the game. For me, I used the STAR DESTROYER and the DIASPORA. The STAR DESTROYER is okay, but the DIASPORA sucks. What it lacks in range, it also lacks in firepower, and it also lacks in handling and capacity and it only makes up for in stopping power. Which is useful, don't get me wrong, but I see why everyone uses the NEBUCHADNEZZAR. As for the STAR DESTROYER, well, I prefer the SPAZER honestly, and I don't get all the hype around the ARCADIA. But it does feel good to land heavy hits with the destroyer. Now my biggest weapon gripe is with the YGGDRASIL. This weapon is a disappointment to large arms everywhere. It is a rocket launcher. Its explosion radius is small, and even its bloody summer is small compared to the melee summers? And it's used for launching enemies? It doesn't seem useful when I can just use a regular shot to stagger or usually KILL enemies and bosses? The weapon ends up being a glorified sniper rifle, since it can hit weak points and ends up one shotting a lot of enemies that possess one. It becomes redundant when the shotgun itself, and the pistol's bloody summer exist. There are two more major problems with these systems: One is the complete lack of depth to any of the attacks in the game. Light hit. Heavy hit. Aerial hit. Dash hit. That's it. Four different variations of attacks, five if you are extremely generous and count the mobility impairment debuff for the SPAZER. It would be a lot cooler if the game abandoned the idea of being a soulslike that it desperately tries to cling to and went for a lot more of a fluid DMC style combat system. The other major problem is the Bloody Summer super attacks. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not one to complain about fun. And it certainly is fun. But... there's a certain upgrade you can attain through great discipline that just... Absolutely shatters the game's balance. Is it fun? Yes. Would I play through the game again without it? Knowing how shallow it is, hell no. But the upgrade REALLY isn't that hard to obtain, with a bit of a time cost and that's it. You have completely ruined the game for yourself. Yeah, I know, I control the buttons I press... Another minor issue with the combat is the camera angle. Which is insane to me, because, the game adjusts your camera during the second boss fight to a more preferable position in my opinion. This camera angle can stick if you lose, and it's just way nicer. I don't know why you can't zoom out or adjust the camera position. It's a no-brainer and I feel like half of my screen is taken up by the floor otherwise. But that's just me, I guess. The Bastards system could use some work, namely making the latter half of the experience less droll. I ended up not maxing my abilities just because I couldn't be bothered sitting through everything, and despite that they performed fine. The dungeons in the game suck. I thoroughly explored them all, and it's kind of just the same thing across 2 different difficulties. "Guys that die in one hit to the rocket launcher" and "Guys that die in 4 hits to the rocket launcher". The rewards and music suck, too. That's pretty much it. The hub area is disappointing, since it's pixelart instead of 3D which in my opinion absolutely demolishes any sense of depth most of the characters could have. The art is good, don't get me wrong, but it just shatters the characters for me. The Last Night is ugly as hell. No clue what's going on there, it's legit a smooth stone slab. So, to sum it all up... Mid-tier hack n' slash that tries to be nuanced but just ends up being an art exhibit. I got married to a cute nurse, and all I got was this stupid Gurren Lagann reference. Unreal Engine sucks.
I really looked forward to "Romeo is a Dead Man" because it looked like it would be something fresh and different. Sadly, it just wasn't fun for me and I had to quit. My biggest issue is that the game feels like it's trying to be weird purely for the sake of being weird. Instead of creating intrigue, the story never managed to get me invested. The narrative jumps from one disconnected event to another, with chapters feeling like a collection of random scenarios that lose their relevance almost as soon as they're introduced. The characters are bland, the dialogue is uninteresting, and after a while I found myself skipping almost every conversation because it felt like insubstantial nonsense rather than meaningful storytelling. The TV guy is probably the worst example. Every time you want to switch dimensions, you're forced to sit through another monologue that adds absolutely nothing to the plot or character development. It's just repetitive, annoying, and wastes the player's time. Visually, the game also left me disappointed. It has that very generic Unreal Engine 5 look, and many of the environments feel as if they were assembled from stock assets with little artistic identity. That's especially disappointing considering the premise. You're supposedly playing a member of the FBI's Space-Time Police in a science-fiction setting, yet roughly 90% of the game takes place on Earth in the late 20th century. It feels like a huge missed opportunity. The concept had so much creative potential, but the game rarely takes advantage of it. There are also plenty of quality-of-life issues that make the experience more frustrating than it needs to be. Picking up a single item takes around five seconds because of the lengthy animation, and the game insists on showing you the same item description every single time, even after you've collected dozens of identical pieces of junk. These little interruptions quickly add up. Combat wasn't much better. It feels slow and often turns into a chore rather than something exciting. Boss fights are even less enjoyable than regular enemy encounters. Dodging and rolling never feel quite right, and the camera is one of the game's biggest flaws. The lock-on system actually makes fights harder whenever more than a few enemies are on screen, making already clunky encounters even more frustrating. Overall, I came to this game expecting a creative sci-fi action title with a unique identity. Instead, I got an experience that felt unfocused, generic, and full of wasted potential. While I can appreciate that some players may enjoy its style, it simply didn't work for me.
This experience was a rollercoaster of mixed feelings. I started this game very excited and hyped purely because of what I had seen on the internet about it being a nice, new, enjoyable hack and slash game. Ill start with the good. It has one of the most creative art directions i have ever seen in a game. It literally combines your average third person gameplay with some pixel 2D gameplay with a touch of normal retro style gameplay, finally amazing comic style cutscenes that all blend amazingly well. It really is flashy and interesting how it plays out, and it somehow works without being overwhelming. The story is on an acceptable level. I just couldnt wrap my head around it completely there was just too much going on, and you somewhat lose track of it all until it picks up again. When it does pick up, it gets a bit interesting, yet it still lacks what could have been better considering the potential this game has. Now the flaws. This game has insane amounts of flaws when it comes to the combat itself, which is the core of it all. It really is just not a hack and slash game at all. When you have so many enemies I mean way too many that can all repeatedly stunlock you, combined with a garbage dodge that feels clunky and not fluid whatsoever, it really just kills everything for me personally. I really just dont like having to fight 100 enemies while they stunlock me against a wall with no way to move or counter it. Its just annoying. The hit registration on the guns in this game is by far one of the worst I have seen. On bigger enemies you have weak points to shoot and weaken them, and I swear to god when aiming literally dead center on the weak point it just doesnt register. And what happens next, you may ask? Instant death. The amount of times this has happened really makes me convinced this game just has unpolished combat. I also felt like them interpreting soulslike elements when it comes to fighting bosses in this game was a really bad move especially when every boss doesnt have a certain mechanic to counter them and you again just stuck with a constant boring clunky dodges and a dream. It just wasnt what I was expecting from a hack and slash game as stated under the games genres. The level design was very fun in the beginning, but as soon as we entered the space world it just went downhill after that. Especially having to run around and constantly build while trying to navigate through everything, it got so annoying, repetitive, and tiresome. While I cant fully give this game a negative review, I still think it was somewhat enjoyable solely because of the art direction it had to offer and the flashiness the game has. But other than that, it really lacks what couldve been something special. A solid 6/10.
