The game is truly brilliant. Some of the most fun I've had in recent years with games. HOWEVER, given that 2K has wrongly and royally ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over Roll7 by SHUTTING THEM DOWN (and all revenue from the game now going to 2K 🤡), I cannot in good faith recommend that you *buy* this game whatsoever, unless you do so second hand (maybe for achievements I guess)
This game rocks and is worth your attention, but the talented development team was promptly laid off after the game's success. I recommend playing this game by other means, but don't support the vampires at 2K.
11/10 Game. Truly one of the best movement shooters out there, nothing balances a frenetic pace, with the absolute freedom of movement like this game does. Nothing feels as nice as pulling off a sick 720 as you perfectly time your shots and dodges for maximum efficiency. The pacing of difficulty is so well thought out, each level putting to work the lessons the previous levels have introduced. And it feels so nice to fail because its just fun to play. One of my all time favorites. Oh and the story is actually really interesting, and done in such a way that feels natural to the game. But 2K games just had to do a corporate and shutter the studio that brought this masterpiece to our doors. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME unless you can get it for free or a deeeeep discount. 2K can go kick rocks, now we'll never see what the studio could have done after this absolute tour de force.
11/10 flawless game, but not worth buying, since the game basically got stolen from the original developers.
A must play, but for the love of god pirate it instead. All devs who worked on this have been fired.
Is it fair to give a dominatrix a thumbs down simply because you don't want your balls to be stepped on? Rollerdrome is a game about lots of things coming at you, all at once. Hey, a sniper is tracking you. Hey, there are three rockets streaming towards you. Hey, you're racing towards a hole in the ground. Hey, there's a guy with a baseball bat to your left. Hey, your gun's dry, do a trick. No, not that one, you've done that one before, that one is boring, do another one. Hey, there's two snipers now. Hey. Hey. Heyheyheyhey. In Rollerdrome, you need no cheat codes to be invulnerable, or to have infinite ammo. It's literally there in the options, which says something about how easy it is to play. Clearly, the developers understood what sort of product they were putting out - but playing a demanding game with cheats kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it? The game currently sits at "very positive", so there's obviously plenty of people who enjoyed what it offers. But I would not recommend Rollerdrome to anyone who does not have a mongoose's reaction speed, and the ability to keep track of all sorts of threats coming at you, all at once, at speed. There's cool stuff to do in Rollerdrome. But you *must* be this tall to ride.
There's a particular type of gamer who would eat up this kind of "mix skating tricks and gunplay" setup, but it ain't me. The real kicker is the fact you can't just try to beat the arenas, they gate further progress on completing X number of side challenges/tasks as you go along, which leads to a lot of replaying stages aiming for gimmick tasks. They might be doing something with the story eventually, but it feels so heavy handed at the halfway mark that I don't particularly care to see if they stick the landing. Quite disappointing.
KARA HASSAN, MATCH VICTORY
The developer of Rollerdrome, Roll7, was shut down by its publisher Take Two and the game was delisted from Steam for a while. A BAFTA winner indie game, with amazing art direction, gameplay and storytelling. If you want to play this (as you should) try to play it in alternative ways and don’t give your money to the people that treat their devs like trash. Rollerdrome can be what I playfully call a “Kung Fu Game” which, for me, means that it is a game about skill and repetition and is sort of an all star favorite category of mine. In theory you can finish Rollerdrome with around 6 or 7 hours of gameplay, but that playtime can come closer to 20 or even 30h if you want to master it and get 100%. It is up to you to decide if you want to really learn the game or just have a good time with it in a more casual manner. The best way to describe playing this game is "Tony hawk with guns” (despite the character using roller skates). The objective is simple: kill all the enemies without dying to win the match. To do that you begin with simple guns like shotgun and pistols, but as you progress in the game you add rocket launchers and laser guns to your arsenal, with all of it sharing the same ammo. The enemy variety also increases with the difficulty as you go along, and they are all very distinct from one another with different types of attacks and demanding specific strategies to deal with each one of them, and on top of that you also have some bosses to bring a little bit of spice to the mix. As you kill the enemies you will need to reload your guns, which you can do by performing tricks with your roller skate. The tricks not only reload your weapon but they also grant you points that you will use to complete score challenges to progress during the campaign. You can also use a mechanic called Reflex time that you activate to slow down time to help you hit your shots and buy you some seconds to plan your next move. The main evasion tool is the dodge button, in which Kara rolls to avoid damage. The catch is that if you are good with your timing you can perform a Perfect dodge which enables you to enter Super Reflex time, a version of the reflex time that happens when you activate right after a perfect dodge and gives you a neat damage boost and extra points. Overall this game offers you amazing and responsive movement, action and theatrics and even though mastering the mechanics can be daunting at first, if you give Rollerdrome an honest chance those things will come naturally during your playthrough. Coming together with that amazing gameplay experience you also have a very good story, especially in the way everything is told to you. The silent protagonist and ultimate underdog is Kara Hassan, a woman that is competing in the violent and dangerous game called Rollerdrome after being a fan since childhood, especially of the competitor Morgan Fray which she idolized. As you play the game there are some sections in between matches that assume the point of view of Kara, and you can explore and read some items that will slowly reveal the story and world. This is a more engaging and non intrusive way of telling a story rather than boring cutscenes, especially considering that it is an action game we are talking about. Allied with that you have beautiful cell shaded graphics and an amazing soundtrack that ties everything together with flair and straight up AURA. I could keep going, but at this point you can see that I love this game very much. Go play it, coward.
Overblown, carried by its art style, the idea behind it is better than the actual gameplay, its main issue is in a game that requires a level of timing and precision, the enemies are inconsistent with their timings, a big issue is their sniper enemies, when the beam is trained on your character, their target aquisition time (the time before they shoot) varies wildly, it could be near instant, or a long time, distance does not factor, also when they're about to shoot, the window to dodge is also inconsistent, in fact a lot of the dodging timing is just, not consistent at all.
