Cute The ZX Spectrum aesthetic is nailed, though if you've a keen eye you will spot some cheating but that's alright. The gameplay is not nearly as clumsy or clunky as real ZX games. It's fast and pretty smooth. But what is it? A twin-stick puzzly shooter set in an oddball retro future involving Queen Victoria and Mars colonisation, but really it's mostly about tea and snacks and bothersome guards, zombies, native beasties, wild mining machines and everything else. Also milk pipelines because hey, why not? You clear one level/screen at a time by navigating a path through traps, collecting keys and survivng to the exit. Rinse, repeat. It does make me want to try the next stage, and the one after that. And so on... It's simple but effective and keeps getting harder and harder. Above all else it's a joy to play. Music is 16-bit retro chip tunes and is largely wonderful. Hell yeah i recommend. The game is very well polished and finely made. Worth full price. If there's any complaint it's that the name is a bit silly and some of the dialogue/story is kind of an afterthought, but it doesn't hurt the core quality. Note - Some have reported controller issues. If you run into those go into Windows settings to set your controller as the preferred device to avoid the game picking the wrong one by default.

I fondly remember rubbing shoulders with a lot of indie devs on Tigsource, back when this website was relevant, and playing the original Rock boshers and thinking this was a masterpiece. I had no hesitations on buying this version and was ready to fondly recomend it but *disc scratch* What? Did they change the protagonist to a woman? oh lawd this SJW pandering should not surprise me from a tigsource forumer, after all that's the reason I left the forums. But then the game is not as fun as I remembered it. I mean it's still the same game, but this spastic pixelly game isn't as fun today as it was back in 2009 when the TIG demake compo was the best thing since sliced bread. Oh and you can't redefine keyboard controls. That means the game is practically unplayable on a non-qwerty keyboard unless you want to use a pad. This is unexcusable in this day and age. Here is your thumb down bro
Fun -brings me back to the 80's.
Изумительное ретро. Всё сделано в том самом духе ZX-Spectrum. Стиль Dendy/NES ставить только тем кто не застал то самое начало 90х. Загрузочный экран доводит до оргазма ^-^
I wish I liked twinstick shooters. Excellent flufftext and style, pulls off its pulp fiction victoriana retro arcade thing with aplomb. It reminds me of DROD, but live instead of turnbased. Expect puzzlerooms of the find-key / put it in the door / rinse repeat variety, with constantly respawning enemies so you have to be able to aim and dodge while navigating small rooms and tight corridors. I really, really wish I liked twinstick shooters. Still, it's a delightful game and more people should play it.
Let's not pretend this is the best thing since sliced bread: this is a cheap and cheerful, if amusing, pastiche of a Spectrum game, with modern touches such as "it's basically fair". It was amusing and harmless for two hours, it pushed my nostalgia button (particularly the sound of the attributes loading in on the loading screen), and that's that. Recommended to people like me because it's cheap.
A lot of people needlessly get hung up, for better or for worse, on the genre or the category of a game. On the other hand, some games get hung up in the same way. You end up with misguided critics, and major studio titles that feel disjointed, forced, or have major elements "slapped on". Rock Boshers, however, is *purely* a fantastic game. The style, the feel, the sophistication, the polish, the awe, the humor, and the challenge soar with such harmony and finesse. Rock boshers is an engrossing and ecstatic experience. This is the real deal. Bravo and Brava.
Thought it was gonna be fun. Turns out this game is hell. 10/10
I'd first like to say that I absolutely love the original Rock Boshers. It is definitely one of my favorite Indie Games, if not my favorite. It captures all of the asethetics of ZX gaming to its fullest beauty, provides interesting and creative gameplay, a good chunk of difficulty (I still haven't beaten it after all of these years), and some light humor. I always assumed development of the game would go no where and it would fade into obscurity. Being remembered as merely a demake like Gang Garrison. Man was I ever overjoyed when I discovered that DX existed! I haven't played it long yet, but it's definitely better than the original (which is a must-get already). Here's my breakdown... -Graphics: Fantastic. It's difficult to work with such a minimal sprite resolution, but Dugan does it masterfully. I was worried that the graphics were updated when I saw the screenshots, but you can choose between Console Mode and Old Computer mode, so no worries. Very faithful to the ZX aesthetic. -Sound: Just fine. Nothing repetitive or annoying. -Music: The soundtrack is great. Though I'm personally pretty disappointed that the original old-school sounding soundtrack is not an option. It really added to the atmosphere. Gameplay: I haven't gotten far yet, but the controls are tight, and I assume the difficulty will get as hard (if not harder) than the original. Which is really hard. If you like old school, minimal, or just plain unique games; do yourself a favor and buy this. Edit: Aw, what the hell? PS4 players get 4 Player Local Battle!? Why is that not included in the PC version? The game is an homage to old COMPUTER games and the developers leave out features for the COMPUTER release. How disappointing!
