Children of Apollo is an exciting twin-stick shooter in a short, arcade style format using a blend of classic and modern gameplay elements. After the Apollo missions humans send an expedition to explore Mars but things go terribly wrong.

Disclaimer: Special thanks to the developer Cargo Cult Gaming LLC for providing me the key and the opportunity to explore and give an honest review of this interesting retro style twin-stick shooter. Pixel Art: 2/5 (very basic) Gameplay: 1/5 (slow paced & too much wandering) Difficulty: 4/5 Immersion: 1/5 Controls: 2/5 (Keep failing early in) Value: 1/5 -------------- Overall 1.4 (Difficulty is always excluded) I try to give every game I play a fair shake... The pixel art design is very reminiscent of Tron from the Atari days. While it is quaint for a moment, it just isn't engaging. The landscapes are mundane and you spend A LOT of time wandering through them, so you see a lot of the same thing over and over. I wanted to like the imagery, but I cound not :( The biggest problem with this game is that the levels serve little purpose other than filler...You wander around and spend time killing baddies, but there is no real satisfaction. I spent 10 minutes traversing the level, not enjoying the experience, just long and drawn out. The Boss fight was a little more interesting, the only aspect I could enjoy (though difficult to enjoy after all the wasted time). In fact, I think that this game would do well to cut to the chase and focus only on the boss fights. I think it would be intersting to have little pixelated story introductions, then boss fights. In its current state, I just cannot suggest this game. Maybe if it were $0.50-$1...If it were more like a Titan Souls, focused strictly on boss fights it might be interesting ;) ACHIEVEMENTS: One achievement to win the game in hard mode, if you have the Uber Patience to devote. ISSUES: I had issues with controls, trying to use steam controller with mouse controls on right thumb pad. Sadly, was unable to get to work so have to resort to mouse+keyboard. The life bar at the bottom of the screen hinders your view, making it very hard when enemies are at the bottom (Level 2 corridors). Regular mode should allow saving after shutting down, while hard mode can be a single run. DISCLAIMER: These are my opinions about the experience I had playing this game. I share them in hopes that people who are like minded will either enjoy a suggested game, or avoid frustration wasting time and money on something I felt was a personal waste. Please feel free to comment positively, but know that anything that trolls or is just simply negative comments will be quickly deleted. The reality is, that my reviews are for people who do not own the game, not to initiate philosophical dialogue about it. If you are passionate about this game, please feel free to share that in your own review. Funny nobody every trolls or bashes a positive review on steam ;)
This is a lovely twin stick shooter with great gameplay, and beautifully redered 8-bit graphics. My only complaint is the inability to save. I know that the intent is that the game be approached like an old-school arcade title, but the fact that I can't save my game means that if I ever want to beat the game I'll have to block out several hours of uninterupted play time, which is rarely feasible for me. As it is, it looks like I'll be playing the first couple of levels over and over until my kids or some other obligation interupts me.
EDIT: I should warn potential buyers, while I did enjoy playing this game, I did not realize that progress is not saved between play sessions. This seems like a strange idea in this day and age, so be aware of it before buying. I would strongly recommend the developer add this as an option. With one play session under my belt, I can say that I had a great time playing this! For the price, it is more than worth it. It is challenging and keeps throwing new things at you. There is nothing too innovative here, but it is a really neat throwback to the old school games of my youth. It's sort of a combination of Berzerk and Adventure, with a great nostalgic feel. I also love the music. It is the only thing that does not really match the old-school style of the game, but it is cool nonetheless. I could do with a little more in terms of character animation, but I can see the charm in the simplicity chosen by the developer. I plan to finish this game later, but for now I am very happy with my purchase, and I will be looking out for their next project!
An awesome retro experience. It's like if Robotron had free-roam and level progression. The CRT style works well with the gameplay and isn't distracting.

Reminded me a lot of a really early eighties sort of exploration/shooting game and that's no bad thing at all.
