Robert on Earth, developed by Remrofsnart and published by 2P Games, is a quietly distinctive indie title that blends cozy farming simulation, light RPG progression, and post-apocalyptic science fiction into a reflective and surprisingly layered experience. Rather than focusing on humanity’s survival, the game imagines a world long after people have disappeared, leaving behind a planet maintained and inhabited by machines. You awaken as Robert, a small, endearing robot with fragmented memories, and are given the freedom to carve out a new purpose in a desolate but strangely hopeful version of Earth. At its core, the game revolves around rebuilding and cultivation, but it reinterprets the familiar farming loop through a mechanical lens. Instead of planting crops for food, Robert grows materials: wood, metal parts, circuits, energy components, and other industrial resources that serve as the backbone of crafting and progression. This twist immediately sets the game apart from traditional farming sims, as planting and harvesting feel more like technological fabrication than agriculture. As you expand your operation, research and mutations allow basic resource plants to evolve into more advanced forms, giving the farming system surprising depth and encouraging experimentation rather than rote optimization. Resource management plays a key role in shaping the game’s pace. Energy and water are finite and must be carefully balanced between farming, crafting, and exploration. Running out of power can abruptly halt progress, forcing players to think ahead and plan their days more thoughtfully. Despite this, the game rarely feels punishing. Instead, it fosters a slow, deliberate rhythm that rewards patience and efficiency. The lack of strict time limits or failure states allows players to engage with systems at their own speed, reinforcing the game’s overall cozy atmosphere even within a bleak setting. Exploration adds meaningful contrast to the tranquility of base-building. Venturing beyond Robert’s underground shelter reveals a ruined surface world filled with abandoned cities, deserts, oases, and mysterious mechanical structures. These areas are populated by other robots, some friendly and helpful, others hostile or malfunctioning. Encounters are simple and not heavily combat-focused, but they introduce a sense of risk and discovery that breaks up the farming routine. Exploration also ties directly into narrative progression, slowly uncovering fragments of Earth’s history and Robert’s role within it. The storytelling in Robert on Earth is understated and environmental rather than overt. There are no long cutscenes or heavy exposition dumps; instead, the story unfolds through dialogue with NPCs, quest descriptions, and visual cues scattered throughout the world. Themes of memory, purpose, and rebuilding echo quietly in the background, inviting players to reflect rather than react. While this subtle approach may leave some players wanting clearer narrative direction, it fits the game’s contemplative tone and encourages curiosity-driven play. Visually, the game adopts a charming 2D art style that emphasizes clarity and personality over detail. Robot designs are expressive and memorable, and environments strike a balance between desolation and warmth, making the ruined world feel inviting rather than oppressive. The sound design complements this nicely, with soft ambient music and mechanical audio cues that reinforce the sense of solitude without becoming melancholic. Together, the visuals and audio create a cohesive atmosphere that supports long, relaxed play sessions. That said, Robert on Earth is not without rough edges. Some systems lack clear explanation, and certain progression requirements can feel opaque, especially for players accustomed to more guided simulation games. A few quests and mechanics rely heavily on icons or trial-and-error discovery, which may frustrate those who prefer explicit instruction. Additionally, moments where progression is locked behind specific story objectives can clash with the otherwise freeform nature of the experience. Ultimately, Robert on Earth is a thoughtful and gentle reimagining of the farming sim genre, framed through a post-human, robot-centric perspective that gives it a unique identity. It succeeds most when players embrace its slower pace and exploratory mindset, finding satisfaction in incremental growth and quiet discovery rather than constant rewards. For fans of cozy simulations who are open to light narrative ambiguity and unconventional mechanics, Robert on Earth offers a memorable journey—one where rebuilding the world begins not with grand heroics, but with a small robot planting the seeds of something new amid the ruins. Rating: 8/10
