«Riverhill Trials»
"Trials" indeed! First up: full points for trying to do something different with the walking sim and platforming genres. Immediately minus one point for a very awkward opening sequence in which you fly a colourful and physics-defying spaceship through all manner of floating debris, with only a white screen and no sound effects to delineate when you've died. So we're down to nine out of ten points so far. Then there's the music. I at first judged the joyous blips and bloops as a tad inappropriate to the scene I was being presented with, but by the time I arrived on a planet - after many a failed attempt to steer my way towards it - the tunes had kind of won me over. Partially on account of the... Good voice acting. Again, what seemed a bit buoyant at first was ultimately befitting of the mood of the game itself. This isn't one of those super-serious, melancholy walking sims, but a colourful and light-hearted romp with tongue-in-cheek narration. After their very sombre - some might even say "pretentious" - first effort, Oracle, the devs have seen fit to lighten the tone quite a bit. The change is welcome, though not quite what I expected. So let's call that plus one point for the combination of these two aural components, and we're back up to ten. Atmos effects, on the other hand, are practically non-existent. No footsteps, so it feels like you're floating even when you're walking (yeah, I know they tried to cover the lack of legs with self-deprecating monologue, but the Stanley Parable kinda got there first). And the aforementioned lack of crashing sound effects for the spaceship was simply unforgivable. Ten minus one equals nine again. Graphics are reasonably charming, but minimal. There are some rather nice vistas, but as walking sims go, it's nothing exceptional. Neither a plus nor a minus. Collision is terrible; at times completely absent. You can do things like walk over campfires with nary a reaction, much less third-degree burns. And water may as well be solid ground. Down to eight. The platforming is...frustrating. I've often said that first-person games aren't always an ideal medium for platforming mechanics, and many parts of this game prove that. You just can't judge distances and timing as well as you can in a 2D or third-person game. The jump button is also...kinda finicky at times, and the game occasionally glitchy. Minus two points, then, as these are hardly forgivable traits in such a pedantic platforming game. Six out of ten. What really kills it, though, is that the checkpointing system is quick to become less than generous, so you'll be doing those tricky bits over and over and OVER again. So...minus another point, and we're down to five. Incentive for exploration is decent, with lots of tiny secrets and out-of-the-way collectables for Achievements. It's still fairly linear, but makes at least some effort to please those who detest such things. Back up to six. Story is, er...well, not really what this game's about. I'll be kind and not deduct a point for that, not least of all because I didn't make it to the end because... The platforming eventually did me in. It just wasn't fun after a while. I can pull off a few "tricky" jumps in a row, but not five or six. And unless you're the type who can - which basically requires far more patience than I'm presently capable of mustering up - I would probably give this a miss, especially at anything other than a very good sale price. As I said at the beginning, full kudos to the devs for trying something a little different, but there's a reason why most first-person games refrain from difficult platforming sections. At the very least, you've gotta be pretty darn good to pull off such a feat; and at present, Watercolor Games are merely promising. Nice try, though. Oh, and have an extra half a point for that awesome almost-cover of "Betty Davis Eyes" part-way through, which certainly put a big smile on my face when it kicked in. Verdict: 6.5/10. Riverhill Trials is a game with beautiful environments that would have worked well as a walking simulator, but also has some mediocre platforming gameplay. If you like what you see in the trailer and screenshots, and if you can enjoy/tolerate some bad platforming, this is a thumbs up. The exploration is quite linear, the voice acting in the game doesn't take centerplace like a typical walking-sim, and is not too serious and not trying too hard to be funny either, but gives the player some basic motivation and connection to what's going on. It works well in my opinion. The platforming, quality control and the general technical side of this game are the weaker points, the developer hasn't shown up for some months now so it's not clear if any of the bugs and glitches are going to be fixed. The achievements are all achievable, a glitch about one collectible being obviously unobtainable (nobody ever playtested this?) is balanced by a glitch where you can pick up collectibles another time after a restart and increasing the counter, so... let's not dwell on it. :)
The game wasn't what I was expecting. It was, however, both better and exactly what I needed while playing it! Riverhill Trials is the kind of experiential puzzle game that both intrigues you while being lovely and relaxing. While there are a few hiccups, it reminds me a lot of a happier Portal or Myst. The graphics are beautiful and the music is easy listening. I look forward to playing it whenever I need a little downtime!
Cannot recommend the game in its current state. I only played for a short while, but had a decent amount of issues with bugs, along with some quality of life issues and some more general gameplay design issues. It looks like development is still quite active on it, so hopefully it will improve going forward. EDIT: Just to make it a bit clearer, I played it after the 0.4 update. I didn't post my specific issues here as I assume most will eventually be fixed, so I put the specific issues in a discussion in the game's forum instead.
(Edit; changed from dislike to like, since the author does seem to have fixed all major flaws, tldr: if you like 3d platformers, definitely get this.) Pros: -The game looks very good, and is optimized pretty well and feels like it should be great. -full voice acting adds a nice touch, despite the fact it's a little silly Conts: -The platforms are easily desynced from eachother in random fashions, leaving you constantly waiting to see how many cycles it takes to resync and then make a failed jump and have to wait again. -(edit: this may or may not be fixed, I tried to replay the game and gave up testing after pressing new game put me back where I just was after the ship scene) There are some strange movements by the character like they are up against invisible walls in random areas without platforms, like the controls go strange and then fix when you walk away and come back, you can walk normally in the area. It's not a "bad" game, it's got a lot of effort put into it clearly on visual finesse, but as a platformer it doesn't work for me, but if you like platformers and have the patience and have the conscious mind of collecting all blue disks before touching different colored ones, then this game looks worth the price of less than 10 dollars for fun times. (To add: One of my friends who I got to buy it wished there was an option for turn off voice or individual sliders on music and voice, but I know that's probably harder to add retroactively on unity games, but that's a suggestion. He also paused and unpaused and somehow ended up in this glitchy noclip mode?)
Not actually that bad if you can forgive sluggish platforming. I loved the scenary and setting and while there wasn't much story I think that it really did not need it, but felt more like a some nice shortly lived dream. To make some comparison with the 'Oracle' which was developed by same group, I prefer indeed this one. I really enjoyed my short trip in a dreamlike universe <3
This game has its fair share of issues curently but when they are fixed this game will be worth the time you put into it, Although I don't think it would take more than 3 hours even for a more inexperienced gamer to get everything.
