«River Legends: A Fly Fishing Adventure»
It’s got a nice feel to it, but a little pricey for the amount of time it takes to unlock everything. The concept and actions involved in the game are relatively easy to follow, and fish aren’t very selective when biting, which would be nice to have a bit more mix and match. Your goal? Fish, catch, and then either release for experience (which is easy to get and unlocks new areas to fish), or keep it if you’d like gold instead, or if it’s too small to produce experience, or if it’s your biggest catch, for instance. Didn’t test any to see if a release still counts in your trophies, which is another aspect this game has available to view if you’re on the main menu. Fishing is basically a back and forth motion with the mouse or whatever you’re using, and then releasing it at the appropriate timing, sort of like real fly fishing. Unlocks are useful, but some are a bit situational, or very vague. Same with a few of the trophies I didn’t manage to snag. They should add descriptions about how to unlock them, and maybe incorporate them into Steam’s achievement system as well. When fishing, there’s a “sweet spot”, which is shown as green, and you click the mouse button to keep it there, or hold it down if the fish is really fighting. Above the green zone is a yellow high tension zone, and a blue low tension zone beneath, so trying to keep it stable can be challenging with bigger catches. I unlocked a few things to help this a bit early into the game, but even if you’re at the top of the green zone, some fish are just too strong to haul in, I found. It’s kind of random in how they will react in their behavior.
Pros
The game itself is quite fun overall! I just wish it was a bit longer and had some more options at your disposal. More fish and more places as well. Once you get the system down, you can just stick to it and catch what you need in each specific area. It doesn’t take too long to get the experience you need to unlock everything. Maybe two or three hours max. I spent a little more trying to figure out the vague trophy missions, but to no avail. There’s wildlife and the scenery is created with a nice calm feel to it. I really liked this aspect of the game, since fishing should be relaxing and peaceful. Some unique things you can do on some levels, and interesting spots you can traverse. I liked the little easter egg areas and so forth which gave it a nice touch. Game ran very well, and what is offered is a pleasant, smooth, and nice experience. Currents are kind of interesting too, as they’ll travel quite a ways on some levels, and it can be fun to dodge rocks as your fly drifts along. I didn’t get mauled by any grizzlies, polar bears, or mountain lions, thankfully. Nothing too vicious or savage out there in the desolate countryside.
Cons
I definitely think it should be a bit bigger for the asking price it is at currently. What you get is fun, but it is just too simple to hook fish, and you will probably get all the unlocks at a fairly rapid pace. Not only could it use more length, but more fish, more unlocks, and other things like that. An experience system that correlated with the ability to snag fish would be cool, and more bait to add in, with variation based on what fish likes what types of bait. I didn’t find any real advantages to buying the other baits in the game. Most fish are not picky at all. More in each area you can unlock would also spruce things up. A couple of extra fishing spots, or maybe ways to get into the middle of the water, since I would fly fish in rivers up to around my waist at times, wading out into the water a bit. Boats or other methods to get further out would be nice. I’d like to see Steam achievements going with those trophies, and an explanation as to how to obtain each trophy if you wanted to know more about, since it’s a bit vague in that area. More gear, differing rods as you level, line strength upgrades or color changes depending on the weather or water conditions, or what types of fish you’re catching, and other things would also make it more interesting.
Conclusion
Excellent little game overall, and I do recommend it if it’s on sale. It isn’t really too large, but what is in the game is done nicely and I had a lot of fun with it. A few tweaks, some additional content, and I’d be extremely happy overall. Not complaining too much though, since it is quite an enjoyable experience! I had a few little glitches, like fish that got stuck around rocks. I ended up netting them from off the screen even at times if I let my line drift far enough away and a rock formation was in the way. Just something odd I noticed as I played, so I kept a mental note about this oddity. Happened two or three times when I was playing, though. Also having to be in the high tension zone ahead of time on some difficult catches. There is simply no other way to catch them in the green zone even with everything unlocked at times, but this temperament seems very randomized. Recommended for the angler and the avid nature fan alike. Almost anybody would probably enjoy the concept here, as it’s laid back, easy to get the gist of, and is entertaining. Kudos to the creators for the job they did creating this game. I’m very satisfied with my game experience, so I’d recommend it to most anybody who’s even remotely interested in fishing! Growing up I played quite a few fishing games. I’ve not played one in a while now, but the idea of a pixel art fly fishing game seemed like an interesting premise. The nostalgia of playing another classic-looking fishing game tied in with my unfamiliarity with fly fishing immediately had me wanting to try this out. I have to say I was a little surprised at what I ended up getting, though.
Phones
I think it’s relevant to say upfront that River Legends: A Fly Fishing Adventure is a mobile game as well. I’ve gotten a sense for when games are mobile ports or simultaneous mobile releases (not that it’s difficult to see) because of certain design limitations. River Legends has these in a few areas. The control scheme for the game is mouse and keyboard, which honestly surprised me when I started out. I assumed the ‘swing and flick’ nature of casting would involve a controller’s analog stick. However, there is no controller option. After just a bit of practice though, using the mouse to do this becomes second nature. The UI is also HUGE on the screen, which of course is customary on tiny phone screens where visibility must be maximized and the dexterity needed to select screen items has to be minimal. This does make for some areas where things look a bit awkward, but in general, the UI isn’t detrimental to the gameplay. I just wouldn’t mind if it was the size of a typical game played on a monitor.
A Fishing Adventure
Part of what made River Legends interesting was the sense of progression. While it is limited here, it’s an element that makes similar fishing games more enticing to play. Buying new gear and unlocking bodies of water to fish keeps you moving forward and catching as many fish as possible. The problem began when, an hour into the game, I had already purchased all of the gear. Not long after that, I unlocked every lake. By the two-hour mark, I was just trying to resolve some of the hidden milestones like catching the secret giant fish that is part of every fishing game. There is also a bit of an exploration element to River Legends as well. You can walk around the map to put yourself in the most advantageous position for casting your line, but there’s more to it. With a little searching, there are several caves hidden throughout the maps. For the most part, these are uneventful. Some of them have little bits of gold you can pick up (the currency of the game) and something sort of like easter eggs, but I couldn’t find anything significant in them. I assumed there would be some kind of magical fishing pole or lure hidden away, but after what seemed like endless searching – I found nothing.
The Fishing Part
River Legends, as with any fishing game, hinges on whether the actual act of casting out and catching a fish is fun to do. Most fishing games have you casting and reeling constantly, just like the pros, but fly fishing is a bit more nuanced. Here, you’ll line up your cast and then start swinging the pole around by moving the mouse back and forth and holding the left mouse button. When you release it, it goes the direction you aimed and the distance depends on how long you were swinging. With practice, you can get reasonably precise with this process. Instead of reeling and twitching spinners or poppers, your goal here is to let your fly drift through the body of water looking like a tasty bug on the surface. This means that the location of your cast is really the core of what determines whether you catch a fish. You also have to take into account that casting right on top of a fish you want to catch will generally spook them and you won’t get a chance. Where this falls apart a bit is that I didn’t really ever have to worry about ‘catching the wrong fish’. You have to set the hook to start reeling anything in. This resulted in me ignoring bites from smaller fish and just waiting for the fly to drift to larger ones. One thing that usually makes fishing games challenging is actively avoiding going near smaller fish in an effort to lure in the big ones. That element would work well here, but it’s not part of the design. Once caught, reeling in a fish is a bit underwhelming as well. The only goal is to keep a meter in the green to prevent either letting it get too slack - resulting in the fishing getting loose or too tight and having the line break. You manage this by reeling intermittently and moving the pole between vertical and horizontal to determine how much pressure you’re putting on the line. After unlocking the one additional pole available in the game, I didn’t lose a single fish for the entire rest of my gameplay.
Keep it or throw it back?
I am a bit on the fence with River Legends. I love the premise and a lot of the visual design. I even enjoy the core gameplay to a certain degree, but it just feels like it could be so much better. I shouldn’t have been able to unlock everything so quickly. The small number of poles, lures, and other items make it feel arbitrarily limited. There could also be much more to explore and discover without compromising the game. There could even be some kind of degradation or loss of lures/poles/whatever to make the game more replayable. Completing so much in such a short amount of time works fine for a fishing game you play on your phone during a commercial break or on a short bus ride, but when you sit down to play a game on PC you want it to feel significant… or at least challenging. I do like River Legends, and I want to play more of it, but I just can’t see a reason to right now. It feels like the start of a fishing game rather than the entirety. When you throw on top of it that it’s $15 on Steam, it just seems ridiculous. Especially when the phone version is only $5. If you want to play it and probably enjoy it the most, just buy it on your phone. From there it will probably look the best, play the best, and feel like a better value proposition. Also, it would be nice if there was music throughout the game. The music on the menu is very pleasant and I think that if that was available (even as an option you could turn off), it would make the game even more relaxing. The ambient nature sounds are decent, but music would be much better.

While likely not the most efficient means of actually catching fish, "River Legends" offers a relaxing and artful alternative to traditional fishing that was once described by 17th century author Izaak Walton as "the contemplative man's video-gaming."

When it comes to fishing, I’ll be the first to admit there’s a million other things I’d rather do before stomping into a cold, wet river and waiting for hours just for a nibble; however, River Legends: A Fly Fishing Adventure gave me all of the joys of fishing with none of the negatives attached. It’s calming, it’s challenging, and it’s definitely rewarding. This is the perfect game to unwind from a particularly stressful video game or after a long day at work. If you even remotely enjoy video games and are looking for something different and wholesome, River Legends: A Fly Fishing Adventure is definitely a trophy catch.
As an old angler, I can definitely say this is THE most relaxing, and possibly the most ZEN fishing game I have ever come across. I've had my share of TONS of fishing games dating back to... well... let's just say when games were measured in megabytes and not gigabytes. This is a fly fishing game; and this is a rarity when it comes to fishing games. Fly fishing has that meditative effect on a person, and this game captures it. The developer designed this game in such a way that you can just drift into some far off river, where you, and you alone are surrounded by nature. I love the rabbits and critters prancing about while you fish. The casting system is well designed to give you that sense of casting that line back and forth. The fish species are spot-on. The way the developer set up the reeling where you reel high, medium, or low within a zone on your screen is pretty smart. And yes you can wear waders! I highly recommend this game. This is fly fishing. Prepare to meditate and enjoy.
