With Rise Eterna War, the series comes back with a prequel supposed to tell the events that led to the story of the first game. Not a Strategy Rpg anymore, the game has unexpectedly become some sort of Tower Defense with a touch of unit management. Gather resources, send out different types of troops, and try to defeat the enemy leader on the other side of the screen. I'll get what the game does well out of the way first, that'll be quick. Since Rise Eterna War is a prequel, it takes place in the same world as the first game and you'll meet many of its characters as well. Still stylishly designed, they take the role of heroes providing bonuses to nearby units once their gauge is full. The rest of your heavily pixelated troops don't look great, but at least they're easy to distinguish from one another. Which is good, because there are quite a few different units : soldiers, knights, berserkers, archers, healers... You can upgrade them to raise their stats, the same way you can upgrade the ballista, your siege weapon, that delivers AoE damage once ready. Now for the less... pleasant side of things. Those stylish heroes mentioned previously are sadly useless, as fights are usually over before they can be summoned. The way the story lets you recruit them is also pretty silly, and the same every time : once beaten, they all go "Oh sorry, I hadn't recognized you". Having to beat up enemies before they become allies... What is this, Pokémon ? The gameplay loop quickly becomes boring as well : mine resources, send your troops, repeat if that doesn't win. You can either struggle on every battle and make it hard on yourself by selecting the fancy but inferior units you like, or use the one setup that works for every fight and face no challenge until the end. The last thing I'll complain about is a huge oversight : the selected option when you get to the main menu is "New Game"... Press A or Enter two more times (as one does when mashing to skip the intros) and you've overwritten your savefile... Which I did twice. Did someone even test this ? Rise Eterna War is a weird, uninteresting "strategy" game that doesn't even provide a satisfying explanation for those who care about the story of the series. I don't see why anyone would play this. A 3 from me. It's harsh, but not all games deserve to be played.

Nice game. I wish it to be much longer :-)
Do you like giant pixelated ballistas blasting your enemies with a giant pixelated arrow? No? Then this game is not for you. I boot this game sometime as a guilty pleasure to get a few laughs in while playing. For less than a buck I'd say it was well worth it. 5/10
** Interesting, but not enough ** The title surmises what I think about the game. I believe it has a nice story and a interesting progress. However, it didn't catch me, I do believe the game has a lot of potential, especially in a specific style of global conflict (Grand Kingdom style) the game would earn more fans. But anyway, I find the game enjoyable and now I noticed that I rushed it (all achievements in 8 hours, I don't know average times, so sorry, for my usual playstyle this is fast). Nothing to add, it is a great game with a lot of undeveloped potential, in my humble opinion.

Rise Eterna War, developed by Makee and Beast Games S. A. and published by Forever Entertainment S. A., positions itself as a narrative-driven strategy experience that expands the universe introduced in Rise Eterna. Acting as a prequel, it shifts focus to Arthbane, a battle-hardened general fighting to reclaim his homeland after a devastating invasion. The premise carries an inherently somber tone: a fallen kingdom, scattered loyalists, and the heavy burden of leadership resting on one man’s shoulders. Rather than simply retreading tactical RPG territory, the game attempts to blend multiple strategic systems into a hybrid design that merges real-time elements, resource management, and deck-building mechanics within a campaign-driven framework. The core gameplay structure revolves around commanding units across a series of story missions that unfold progressively. Players recruit and manage a roster of distinct units and heroes, each offering different tactical advantages. Between missions, strategic preparation plays a central role. Resources must be gathered, troops must be fed and maintained, and upgrades must be chosen carefully. This layer of logistical oversight introduces an element of planning beyond the battlefield itself. The inclusion of deck-building mechanics adds another dimension, as players construct and modify tactical options that influence combat encounters. On paper, this hybridization promises depth and flexibility, encouraging varied approaches to each engagement. However, the balance between these systems can feel uneven. The real-time elements sometimes lack the fluid responsiveness that strategy players expect, and transitions between preparation phases and active combat may disrupt pacing. Resource flow can feel slow, making progression occasionally grind-heavy rather than rewarding. While the game aims to create tension through scarcity and difficult decisions, it can sometimes cross into frustration when upgrades or improvements feel gated by prolonged resource accumulation. The deck-building system, though conceptually intriguing, does not always integrate seamlessly with the broader strategy mechanics, which may leave some players uncertain about its full tactical impact. Narratively, Rise Eterna War leans heavily into themes of resilience, sacrifice, and loyalty. Arthbane is portrayed as a flawed yet determined leader, and the story seeks to add emotional weight to each mission. Dialogue and mission briefings attempt to flesh out the political turmoil and personal stakes surrounding the war effort. While the overarching narrative carries potential, its execution varies in effectiveness. Some story beats resonate, particularly when focusing on individual struggles within the resistance, but other moments feel underdeveloped or abrupt. The game aspires to deliver a compelling character-driven prequel, yet its storytelling sometimes struggles to maintain consistent emotional momentum across its lengthy campaign. Visually, the game adopts a pixel-art aesthetic that aligns with its indie roots and connects stylistically to the broader Rise Eterna universe. Character sprites and battlefield environments are clear and readable, prioritizing functionality over spectacle. While the art style carries a certain retro charm, it does not push visual boundaries within the modern strategy genre. Animations are serviceable, though not particularly dynamic, and large-scale battles can appear visually restrained compared to more polished tactical titles. The presentation remains cohesive, but rarely stands out as a defining strength. Audio design supports the somber tone with orchestral-inspired tracks that aim to underscore the gravity of war. Music shifts appropriately between preparation phases and combat encounters, though repetition can become noticeable over extended play sessions. Sound effects provide adequate feedback during battles but lack the impactful punch that might heighten tension during critical moments. The overall audiovisual package contributes to atmosphere without elevating the experience beyond its mechanical framework. One of the game’s most notable aspects is its ambition. Rise Eterna War clearly attempts to evolve the foundation laid by its predecessor by introducing layered mechanics and a more expansive campaign. Its hybrid approach reflects a desire to experiment within the strategy genre rather than adhere strictly to turn-based conventions. However, ambition alone does not guarantee cohesion. Players seeking a finely tuned tactical system may find certain mechanics underdeveloped or unevenly implemented. Conversely, those interested in indie strategy titles that experiment with genre blending may appreciate the willingness to take risks. Ultimately, Rise Eterna War stands as a determined effort to expand a niche strategy franchise with a more complex mechanical framework and a deeper narrative focus. It offers a substantial campaign, a variety of units, and layered systems that aim to challenge both tactical planning and long-term resource management. While it does not fully escape pacing issues or mechanical inconsistencies, it provides moments of strategic engagement and story-driven motivation for players willing to invest time in its systems. For fans of the Rise Eterna universe or players intrigued by hybrid strategy experimentation, it presents an earnest, if imperfect, addition to the indie tactical landscape. Rating: 5/10
