Summary: The game's story and ambiance caught my attention and held it; I was motivated to play through it in a single sitting. I am really looking forward to more story-driven games by this team. On the other hand, the game is short and feels a bit unpolished, so $15 may feel steep. I strongly recommend trying the demo to get a feel for the game before buying. Things that I liked: + The game made me care about the characters and their well-being very quickly + I liked the soundtrack and how it was used in the game. + The demo was quite good at setting expectations. +/- The game feels quite short. On one hand, past VN and adventure game experience lead me to expect a longer game. On the other hand, I appreciated the lack of apparent filler; I do not think I would have enjoyed this game as much if the same story was stretched over a longer playtime. Things that I did not like: - The first part is just unpolished/buggy enough to be noticeable (examples: picking up the same object or seeing the same event twice in a run, not seeing expected scenes when re-attempting a route). While none of the bugs impeded progress through the game, the lack of polish bothered me a bit.
Before the start of the game, I was annoyed by the Merry Bad END achievement because it felt like an immersion-breaking encouragement to play perversely. Looking back, it feels like subtle foreshadowing that some ENDs can only be accessed by deliberately "failing" to save characters. These things seem like part of the setup for the Mia and Owen END.
An emotional game that takes you on a journey to defy death and fate. The music is great, the dialogue and characters are quite well written, and all in all it's an enjoyable story with a sort of supernatural escape room twist, with themes of self-acceptance, queer romance, perseverance, and growth. Completion of the Basic storyline takes maybe 3 hours, with a single bonus achievement for finding all of the hidden bad ends. Short game but well worth the cost, in my opinion.
i enjoyed it somewhat, but man is 20$ for this rly doesnt feel worth it. if this game ever was free or at least below 10$ it be a worth while buy. It had yuri and Yaoi(lesbian and gay) elements to it that i like, but the white ending doesnt make all that much sense but i went with it cuz it seems less sad then leaving her to rot. The puzzles were pretty basic but finding all the endings was fun, got to theory craft a whole lot
This game is absolutely stunning. From the portrait art, to the soundtrack (definitely would recommend adding that on if you choose to purchase it), to the amazingly well-written characters and story, this game is absolutely a gem in my collection which I have played and replayed time and time again. Even though it's listed as a horror, the gore is limited to the pixel sprites (which can be toggled), and descriptions - none of the CGs are graphic in nature. However, half of the fun is in finding the different ENDs to the paths Freya can choose to take, and seeing if you can discover them all (including the bonus ones). Thus, trying to think of ways to bring death unto yourself and others does end up as part of the goal. All in all, a first playthrough will probably take about two-three hours, and once you've discovered all the secrets and solutions, playing a 100% run will probably run you the same - depending on if you're reading the dialog again or skipping through (of course, since the story is the joy of replaying it, why would you want to skip it?)
Had this game for awhile and finally decided to play it! I'm glad I did, I love the concept and the simple-but-cute pixel art is really charming. I love the story and little puzzles. Definitely worth the time to play. My only gripe is that one of the achievements (might be bugged) There is one to get the secret endings and no matter how many times I have tried to get it, it will not unlock, I am stuck on 7/8. Its been a couple years since the game came out and it seems this is still not fixed. I am an achievement hunter and like to try to 100% my games so it's quite frustrating.
I have played through a couple of times now and I love the story! In terms of bugs, there is only one that is of any significance to me; at the time of writing this review some of the achievements appear to be bugged, and although I have reached several "ENDs", none of the achievements seem to have been unlocked No matter however, I shall just wait for a hotfix and then have an excuse come come back and attempt to unlock the rest!!!
The game's a bit short, but the premise is engaging as are the wonderful characters. I'd hoped I could see more of their backstory.
I did like this, but frankly, it feels more like a proof of concept or alpha than a complete game. The dialogue feels underwritten in a lot of places, even by the end I didn't really feel like I had a firm grasp on some of the characters. I was surprised how little dialogue there was, and I think the game could have used some more internal narration, if nothing else, to make it more clear what is happening on screen. There are some moments where the visuals weren't really clear about what was happening, and then there wasn't much dialogue and no narration explaining what exactly I was looking at. Some emotional moments too, I feel could have used additional dialogue. I wouldn't have minded a much longer prologue to get more a handle on the dynamic between the characters, even if there was no additional gameplay. There are also some continuity errors visually regarding items, where you can pick up an item twice if you leave and come back, though it luckily doesn't make the game bug out. The game is nonlinear, which is a fun idea, but it feels like there isn't enough unique content for the characters to stretch their legs and have truly unique interactions and situations happen. For example, one "route" has an early branch where a character can die. Now normally, you would expect this death to hang over everything, maybe a unique situation arises. However, it leads to the same gameplay and story situation, and only a handful of lines being different. At the end, I could only scratch my head at why I needed to see such an anemic ending to progress the game overall. It didn't give that satisfying feeling other games I've played where each ending gives you different pieces of the overall puzzle and cause the player to speculate. The game also has a few issues with player direction. It can be difficult to keep track of what rooms are through what doors because you will often be placed in a random spot away from the door you just went through in the new room, meaning you need to guess which door in the room is the one you entered from. There are also cases where you will go down through a door, but in the new room, the door to exit isn't "up" from the players perspective, but a side direction.
Technically, there is a plot reason for why this might be, but a map would have been appreciated if the layout had to be that way.
I've written a lot of criticism, but I still did like it. Unclear circumstances around individuals forced into solving escape room puzzles is a setup that always inspires curiosity. The music does a fantastic job of setting the tone, even if there is only a handful of tracks. The music may be why my expectations were so high initially. I also liked the character sprites, I enjoyed their unique look. I also did enjoy the puzzles, even if the explanation before you try them is a little ambiguous sometimes. It is worth playing, but I do recommend waiting for it to go on sale.
