A competently made Tower Defense title. Graphics are minimal but very good and there is a challenge to be had with the placement a positioning of towers. Wouldn't mind the ability to zoom out a bit more. Still needs a bit of work for a few more "bells and whistles", but for an initial release its fairly promising.
Warning - Asset Flip
"Resistance TD" is (mostly) an asset flip of Tower Defense Toolkit 4 (TDTK-4) by SongGameDev. I say "mostly" because while the foundation is unchanged the "developer" at least bothered to create a bunch of custom maps for his game. However, that's not to say the game isn't terrible and a waste of your time and money. Since the TDTK-4 asset pack is pretty solid it's extremely easy to quickly whip up some levels, but that's not all game development involves, right? Let's see: - there's no progression at all, you just select a level to play, that's it - there's no tutorial so unless you are well versed in TD games you'll end up getting absolutely creamed even on the first map - all information is displayed in a terrible custom font that's hard to read - balance is pretty much nonexistant - visuals are an ugly hodgepodge of assets from various sources including the default assets included in TDTK-4 (which obviously don't match anything) Its pretty safe to assume the "developer" here is pretty young (the halloween level kinda gives that away) so take this as good advice: if you're going to use asset packs, please, for the love of everything holy, don't just import them and be done with it. Take your time and improve on the (usually good but bare-bones) foundation given to you. This all might sound very harsh and drastic but if you're going to offer your game for real money and your game sucks because you didn't bother working on it yourself this is the kind of feedback to expect. Please don't buy this game. Thank you.
Join my Steam group for more asset flip reviews
Basic, minimalist tower defense game. One boosts it's neighbors, one slows the enemy, missile only shoots air units, then you have machine gun, bean laser and cannon, which has an AOE attack. Six towers, seems like they can each be promoted twice, with no interesting option. There is no controlling the attackers path in any way, no advancement, no strategic upgrades or tactical attacks. About as blah as it can be. While everything works, it has no flavor, and nothing really to say for itself. A tepid thumbs down.
Warning: Asset Flip!
Resistance TD is a Unity Asset flip, what Valve calls a "fake game". The "developer", Albatross Idea, took the Tower Defense Toolkit 4 Unity Store tutorial/demo/game asset pack from the real developers, SongGameDev, changed the name, and dumped the result onto Steam. The only real difference from the raw asset pack is that they made a couple of custom levels, which is trivial and doesn't do anything to change the fact this is just a Unity asset/demo/tutorial. They're attempting to scam people into buying this, so they can get your money for someone else's work. Albatross Idea have a known history of trying to scam people into paying them money for someone else's work. An example of Albatross Idea doing this is Little Big Guy, which is really "Survival Engine", written by the actual developers, Indie Marc. The products that result from asset flips aren't "real" games. They lack depth and content, because they're just simplistic copies of demos or tutorials. In this case, "Tower Defense Toolkit 4" is just a demo pack to teach people how to build a 3D tower defense game using Unity, and doesn't have any merit as a proper, fully fledged PC game, so a copy+paste of it can't be recommended. Asset flips don't involve any professional game development. Sure, sometimes they may change a few cosmetic things, swap out different assets etc, but at heart it's functionally identical to the asset they're ripping off. Asset flips like this are harmful to the gaming industry and to Steam because they reduce the visibility that sincerely made indie games should have, and make it harder for gamers to find real games from genuine developers. Don't reward this morally bankrupt, unethical behaviour from Albatross Idea.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer comes up with a somewhat incomprehensible claim that I didn't buy the game. Ridiculous. It's impossible for a game to appear in a Steam library unless: 1. It's purchased directly 2. It's purchased as part of a bundle (The developer sold this asset flip, trying to get paid for someone else's work, in DailyIndieGame bundles 656 and 846) 3. It's gifted by the developer 4. It's gifted by someone else who bought it It's unclear why the developer chose to make a ridiculously and immediately, self evidently disproven claim that I had not paid for the game. But I thank the developer for drawing more attention to the fact they stole the work of others and are trying to scam people into paying him for it. Absolutely ZERO ethics from a morally bankrupt "developer"/thief.
