This is a situation where an alternative to a thumbs up or down would be good. A lot of mixed feelings. I really wanted to like this game as I love retro games and GameBoy games. I was curious to try it as it somehow got a physical release through Limited Run but I am disappointed as it just feels very derivative compared to Metroid II. It feels like a game quickly put together through an early version of GB Studio, not a game design due to an artistic choice. It just lacks polish. There is also hardly any sound at all in the game. I would have given a thumbs up for the benefit of doubt but the fact that the game is now being "retired" by the developer barely 6 months after release means there won't be any much needed updates to the game, so with that I am giving a thumbs down.
Most of my time is on the itchio release, but a banger GBC metroidvania. play it

I like dis game
Hey buddy can you update your inspirations to include Megaman X on the store page so people know about the
final boss phase that's a 600% spike in difficulty for being 3 fights in a row with no health refills?
It'll really help people know what they're getting into so they can just cheatengine the health bar instead of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up their hands into screamworthy pain with a 100 APM 6 minute rush. I otherwise loved the game. I liked the music. I liked Central Irulia's music sounding like Red Brinstar, and I liked all the little animals running around. I think my favorite area might have been Treton, both for its frostiness and for its music, although it was a little bit unfitting for the area, sounding more like something for a swashbuckling maritime adventure than the icy ruins that they are. I even liked having no sense of direction and stumbling through the planet and getting into areas that I probably shouldn't have gone to as early as I did and then backtracking and repeating the same mistake again, picking up life jars along the way and avoiding the toughest encounters, finally getting upgrades to my weapons and learning some kiting maneuvers to help me take down the rest. I liked the startling sudden hallway encounters in
Engine Room
where I was low on health and just had no option but to run as fast as I could in order to get a save and a health refill. I didn't like the misleading nature of the
enemy counter (or rather the true accuracy, whichever way you want to put it. It didn't work as smooth an experience as the Metroid II one did, in any case)
that led me aimlessly backtracking for an hour through the maps trying to figure out what I was missing before I finally returned to the Chamber entrance to find that yes I actually did
kill enough even though it said there were still two remaining.
I loved so much about this game. I loved the
escape sequence that caught me unawares expecting to have a more laid-back exit like Metroid II, and I even found it funny to fail it a few times from bad platforming, and it was exciting to just barely make it out with 0 seconds on the clock. I loved the twist that both Ashter and the game manual were lying about several important details.
A lot of effort must have been put into the final area, and it really shows. I really liked the way it looked. In some ways I even liked the final fights. On paper they're good but the execution is ruined by what is my chief complaint in this review. I really want to leave a positive review because of how impressed I was by this game. But the constant burning pain of my repetitive strain injury resulting from my attempt to complete it is telling me to do otherwise. So I'm breaking the tie with a coin flip. It landed on heads. Consider yourself lucky. Consider being a little more forgiving on the player with your next games, leaving the torture to those who specifically ask for it with a hard mode. And maybe consider having three save slots instead of just one.
I personally liked it but there's a lot of flaws that I hope the developer looks at and fixes for either a new version or a sequel. Very cool concept but please give the map at the start of the game instead of the very end. Not everyone has a good sense of direction and navigation and a lot of players would probably quit EVEN if you gave them a map at the start. Even once I had the map I felt lost. All the bosses are too tanky and that final boss is way too hard. Great first game for the dev though just hope they consider making things easier for the avg player and adding a hard mode maybe.
Only recommending this cause it has a unique personality to it. the game is a bit strange as a metroidvania game but more or less.. I, myself didn't find it too enjoyable as one, as you're literally toss down a well with no idea what you're picking up or doing, and the game has no enemies in the beginning as they only spawn in after you get some item. I don't really like that type of gameplay introduction but the art's cute and the idea is nice... just poorly introduced. to people who might like that sort of thing or vague introductions. yeah might be a fun little game here.
I fricking love this game seriously if you don't play this and you call yourself a retro or metroidvania fan you missing out
