Quick thoughts with accompanying screenshots and video in Sinical Network
https://www.sinicalanimenetwork.com/post/refraction-quick-thoughts Refraction is a free-to-play supernatural student life visual novel with romance by Universe Zero. It features Jackie Shields, a female student at Big Lake University where she attends Intro to World Religions classes with her best friends Jun and Paul. She is also a member of the university's Journalism department and has an ambitious plan to do an exposé with her fellow department members on the university's president for corruption. Jackie wakes up one day to find herself in an alternate reality in which her friends, and the Journalism department's plans may have changed. She also has to deal with her double Jacqueline Shields who is taking her place and doing some things without her knowledge. After spending over 2 hours to read through the visual novel and obtaining all the achievements, I can confirm that Refraction has interesting modern pop culture references with some choices that lead to 4 different endings. A Steam community guide is also available to help players get all the endings and achievements. In terms of artwork and background music, they are nice enough in bringing out the humor in the story, and I hope this visual novel will qualify for normal Steam profile features in future. On the other hand, the short length of the entire visual novel cause the romance routes to feel rushed with little time to develop the character relationship properly. This is a bit of a pity as the characters have interesting personalities, backgrounds and hobbies that makes it worthwhile to try every character route and ending. Overall, Refraction is an interesting supernatural student life visual novel with some comical artwork, background music, and pop culture references. If you like the genre and the story description looks interesting enough, this is a nice free to play game to read for a few hours.
Pros
- Interesting story - Cute, funny artwork and BGM - Guide available - Free to play
Cons
- Rushed romance options - Some coarse language
Visual novel, JRPG, Anime Steam group - Join the group and consider following the group's curator list for more reviews or recommended free-to-play games
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/vnislife

Follow Far2close - Visual Novel Playthroughs Curator Page Refraction Developer: Universe Zero Publisher: Universe Zero Pros: 1. An interesting plot surrounding heavy realistic themes such as taking down someone known for sexual offenses while also using alternate universes to present a larger conflict to the main character. 2. The characters Jun and Paul are unique with their differing personalities, showing clear disagreement on certain topics. This also plays out on whose route you decide to go with. The same goes with the side characters that you are involved with in your journalistic ventures. 3. The beginning was a smart introduction to Jun, using a mock visual novel inside a visual novel to show us her passion towards video games. 4. The small segment showing the switch between universes is neat, especially on the final day. 5. The static and tense music upon selecting a pivotal choice is a nice addition. 6. When accessing the other screens (Save/Load, Preferences, etc.) the small icons have a little bouncing animation. A small but welcomed addition. 7. The art is nice and inoffensive to the eye, along with several varying CG art with Jun or Paul. 8. The music does its job in fitting in with the situation. The intensity when presented with a choice to make, scenes of character development, to a resolution of the conflict. It does a fine job in helping set the mood and ambience of it all. Neutrals: 1. It does feel a little weird when you're presented with the preferences screen instead of the Save/Load upon right clicking. (No points deducted or added) Cons: 1. The romance subplot doesn't feel too present, as the time spent with the characters is not enough to feel justified to have a lot of character bonding. It feels more like you are spending time with them as a friend rather than a love interest. 2. As stated from above, Refraction is short(which isn't a bad thing) but it could have used some more time in order to flesh out Jackie, Jun, and Paul. Conclusion: Refraction is a nifty little story utilizing heavy themes but also having interesting sci-fi elements to impact the plot. The characters are unique enough to be interesting to interact with, but the short amount of time isn't enough in order to get a romantic feel from them. Refraction gives off an entertaining story to tell, despite the shortcomings in some areas. Score: 7/10 GOOD

Jackie Shields uyandığında dünyasındaki her şeyin hatırladığından biraz farklı olduğunu fark eder.
Refraction is a good visual novel with an interesting story line and a unique art style. The game has multiple endings and branching pathways throughout the game. This visual novel didn't contain any voice acting and while that wasn't an issue for me I know some players are picky about that sort of thing so I figured I would mention it. The game has icons at the bottom of the screen for saving loading and that sort of thing that initially had me confused but fortunately there is a help section that will tell you what the buttons do. I'm a bit surprised this game hasn't gotten more attention. Hopefully people will read this review and give the game a chance like I did.
This was fantastic!! Really engaging story, and the choices were really intense at times. I was super invested in the characters and story! The graphics were really fun and beautiful. I am a big big fan!! I may have to replay to see what happens with different choices.
Before I played Refraction, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
