About
Rats in the Cage is an unorthodox satirical puzzle game. Its uniqueness lies in the corporate gameplay mechanics you use in the game, as your greatest weapons are - among others - coffee and gossip, which you can use to manipulate your co-workers. The game sometimes forces you to do... unusual actions that no other game (at least to our knowledge) requires you to do. And don't step on the plants! Unless you want "AI" to mess up your screen.

In the life of every corporate rat, there is nothing more important than coffee! Whenever your coworkers have a chance to get one, they will run towards it. You can make them go wherever you want by giving them access to coffee.

Who doesn't love juicy gossip in the office, right? Everyone wants to know who is getting fired and who is having a romance. Similarly to coffee, you can manipulate the path of your coworkers by spreading gossip, but this time you can place them anywhere!

Just remember: no promotion goes without a dose of humiliation.

It wouldn’t be much of a corporate game if you couldn’t stab your coworkers in the back, right?

What do you do with inconvenient deadlines? You push them to block someone else of course!

Too many emails in your inbox? Yeah, we've been there. Postponing work that is standing in your way is always a viable option. You can pretend you have never received an important email, assign it to someone else or act like you just don’t give a damn.
In a series of single-room puzzles, both your intellect and your morality will be tested by the "AI". You will take advantage of your coworkers, manipulate and sacrifice them for your own gain, take credit for their work and lose all your remaining dignity to get to job you want. Coffee will naturally play an important role in this game within a game as well as gossips, emails, deadlines, backstabbing and more. Who knows? Maybe you will even attend one of those endless meetings or climb the corporate ladder by sucking up to your boss. Just like in any corporation, you’ll have to endure a lot.
You applied for a job in a corporation. Due to a large number of applicants, the suitable candidates will be sorted by an entry test, which is designed and controlled by a rude AI that will create a unique relationship with you and use unorthodox ways to discourage you from completing the test.

Rats in a Cage
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Rats in a Cage\ Как итог - неогранённый алмаз.
8/10 Clever cabbage-goat-wolf puzzles set in a corporate office environment. So, work-employee-coffee puzzles? What is it: A resource management game, not in the usual “resource management” style of game, but in the logic, careful planning of the few items you have. You play as a rat in an office environment, with the goal of reaching the exit, which is usually blocked by different obstacles: other rats, closed doors, or a boss demanding that you finish all the work first. Your real goal is to maneuver the other rats to move where you need them to be, sitting on the button that opens the door, or simply out of your way. You can't directly move other rats though, you need to be crafty and lure them with coffee or gossip, and there's barely enough of those for a really tight solution. You'll have to execute carefully laid out plans involving multiple steps, moving rats from place to place, luring them toward, or keeping them away from that appealing coffee, stealing their work, locking them away, stabbing them, all in the name of [strike]science[/strike] a big promotion to the upper floors. Do you have the brains, and most importantly, the lack of morals to climb the corporate ladder all the way to the top? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3334414964 Along the way there are also a few minigames, lots of office banter, and fourth-wall-breaking discussions with a recruitment AI bot trying to get you to stop playing the game. It’s not just an abstract puzzle, but a humorous satire full of office lingo. And the level names aren't just catchphrases, but often also a little hint to solving the level. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3334414203 I really liked this game. Despite its rough looks and vulgar dialogue, the puzzles are great, with a good difficulty curve leading up to some really headscratching levels. There aren't too many levels, but they are all pretty unique, and they will keep you occupied for at least 4-5 hours. And although I did find some cheeses with carefully timed moves, the levels don't normally require that, just finding the right sequence of steps you can calmly execute at your own pace. What I didn’t like is the way the bonus section is unlocked (it requires editing a file on disk), and some of the mini activities require more than logic; one is not 100% accessible to people with certain disabilities (I won't spoil it though), one requires fast movement, and one requires some pop culture knowledge. Warning: Although I liked it and it adds flavor to the game, it does use very crude language and violence, but the devs are considering adding a SFW version. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3334440213 How hard is it: A good range from easy to hard. How long is it: 4 chapters (one is a bonus), 65 regular levels plus a few minigames, and riddles, 5-10 hours. Levels must be completed in order. Level design: Great! Distinct levels with just a few mechanics, small yet challenging, with unique solutions. Quality: Good enough, but could be improved. No undo, but given the realtime nature of movement, it is almost understandable. Decent level select. Keyboard only controls, but Steam can make it work with a controller. A few settings. Dark mode only, it could use a bright mode. Cloud saving. Good achievements. Small, fast and responsive. Worth the price: A bit too high, but it is a good and challenging game. Most positive aspect for me: Excellent logic puzzles, my favorite! Most negative aspect for me: No undo. What would make it better: Undo. Custom level editor and workshop support. Mid level saving. Bright mode. Let the bonus level be unlocked by default. Multiple save slots. Better location for the save file to allow multiple accounts on the same computer to have their own save. Replace the minigame that isn’t accessible to everyone with something else. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-aIW0yo9-E
Difficulty : 3/5 (Rather Hard) Global : 3/5 (Very Good) My website : The Review Principle Curator page : Anokturnus Rats in a Cage puts you in the shoes of the ultimate corporate rat. An AI is tasked to test your ingenuity and morality through a series of puzzles. Though it tries to demoralize you, it will soon realize you're among the worst of the worst and nothing can stand between you and your greedy objective. Rats in a Cage is a corporate satire. The whole game is really funny and the puzzles are about manipulating your uninteresting rat colleagues to climb to the top. Literally, as the game is composed of 3 floors and a bonus one. So how exactly do you manipulate those rats? Well, the fuel of a hard worker is coffee. When a rat smells coffee, it immediately wants to drink it. The same thing happens when it hears gossip, it can't resist the call of the drama. The difference being that coffee is already placed when starting a puzzle while gossip is an item you can pick up and place wherever you want, mainly on buttons. Because the goal of the puzzles is ultimately to reach the exit located behind at least one door, which are opened using buttons. Rats in a Cage is a bit of an unusual puzzle game, as it heavily relies on action and timings. The game is grid-based but not turn-based, if coffee is behind a door, the rats will immediately rush towards it the second that door gets opened. There's another way to control the rats though, namely the pathfinding. If something is on the way, the rats won't be drawn towards their precious futilities. Rats in a Cage is all about careful analysis and precise setups, you generally cannot navigate as you'd like to. Other mechanics get introduced later on, such as the knife that allows you to straight up kill your colleagues so they are not annoying anymore and STAY ON THAT BUTTON. Or cubes, because who doesn't like a dose of sokoban in their puzzles? Once you clear a floor, you'll get to meet your boss. Such an honour! Or not, it depends. During dialogues, you can choose to be arrogant, an ass-licker or bored. Each type of answer leads to a different dialogue, and they are pretty much always funny. Your boss will also challenge you to a minigame, whether it is a cheap sort of Space Invaders or a cool riddle. I liked that, especially as it sometimes plays gently with the game files, it's a nice break from the puzzles that can get quite difficult. Rats in a Cage is... hard to rate difficulty-wise. There are not that many puzzles in the game and they are mostly fine, but a few of them are just soul-crushingly hard. There is no undo button, which means the smallest timing mistake implies a restart. I wouldn't say the game is frustrating, the levels are usually small and it doesn't take that much time to start over... but yeah, it's still annoying as you can't really try things as you'd like to. I know some people can really be put off by that, so be careful if you're interested in this game. Apart from a bug in the pathfinding (sometimes a rat should slightly move but doesn't), I don't think I've experienced anything negative. It all comes down to whether timings are annoying or not to you, I personally liked that as it's a nice change from most puzzle games, and done pretty well. Rats in a Cage is a very good game. Maybe the puzzles are a bit weird sometimes, but the originality of the game makes up for it. Funny puzzle games are not that common, especially ones with a darker sense of humour, the devs have my respect for that. Recommended.
Very neat game. I wasn't expecting to have this much laugh in a puzzle game. But I spent a lot of time working in the office so I may be biased. Music is dangerously addictive. It's still playing in my head. My only complaint is that there were several moments where the difficulty curve felt quite steep. But overall it's a great game with amazing ideas. Very, very recommended! PS: I pressed the "help" button like a madman. I had to stop at some point because my wife was getting worried.
A true hidden gem! The puzzles ramp up in difficulty just right, keeping you hooked with a perfect blend of sarcasm and brain-teasers. The pacing nails it—just when things start to feel familiar, a fresh mechanic drops in, making the game even more fun and forcing you to question your own morals. I can’t wait to dive into all those bonus levels and see what they’ve got in store! Pro tip: I wasn't sure if you could tackle all the puzzles without nailing perfect timing. Turns out, you can! Wish I knew that earlier—it would’ve saved me a few rage-quits from those dead ends.
I will probably sue the devs because I worked almost 8 years in a corporate and this game made me live it all again, so I hope sales will be good to get some moneeey. All in all true hidden gem, lot's of great puzzles, impertinent humour and more. Help button really very helpful, thanks for that, and try to keep plants alive!
