Saw).
I'm sorry, but I'm seriously disappointed by this game. I was looking forward to playing it for ages. The reviews I saw said it was Saw meets Ico, and Ico is one of my all-time favorite games. But it turns out they took the most annoying part of Yorda (the part where you fight with an ai to get it to help you solve a puzzle) and turned it into an entire game mechanic. I was really enjoying the game, even with the excessive violence and horror elements, until it turned out that the majority of the endings are only reachable through the worst "puzzle" in the game. Playing shogi for an hour is not solving puzzles. Especially on VR where it requires you to crane your neck down to interact with the board, it's a tedious and irritating section. And I really wanted to discover the story, but from some of the comments I've seen... it doesn't actually have one? Each of the endings I've seen is totally disconnected from each other, and they all seem completely random. TL;DR: If you like playing shogi for an hour while your neck hurts and a little girl constantly sobs, this may be the game for you.
what everyday is like for a girl like me
I'm of a mixed opinion about this game. There are things to like, but there are alot of problems with it as well, so I cannot recommend it. tl;dr: Great idea. Bad execution that wastes a lot of your time. Premise seemed interesting. Reminded me of Ico and Wonder project J2 but with an escape room twist. SIt in a chair, figure out puzzles, guide the girl to do stuff. What could go wrong. Well, mostly stuff with the girl could go wrong. Let's start with the good things first. The setting is weird and intriguing. The girl is well animated and acted. Puzzles are mostly fine and varied... And that's about it. First, game feels very fragmented. There is not much of a journey that you take while bonding with the girl. Ico this game is not. And while the escape room setting kinda implies that the game would be separated into different rooms, that's not what I'm talking about. It's the way the game constantly bombards you with the fake endings, that I have an issue with. You start a game, complete a challenge room or two, then suddenly get an ending (pretty short and unsatisfying). You go back, pick a different room, solve one more puzzle and get another ending (or more like a variation of the first one). These endings don't make much sense (at first at least) and kinda break the feeling of progression in my opinion, and feel kinda pointless. Second, the game likes to waste your time alot. Not just with the meaningless endings. The "gameplay" itself is very slow. You might be the smartest person in the world and figure out a puzzle in a matter of seconds, but it will take several minutes to guide the girl to do all the required actions. She does everything very slowly. She asks for confirmation before doing most actions. And sometimes she ignores your commands entirely. It also doesn't help that the laser that you point with doesn't register the command until it stops shining. Which takes a second or two. A second here, an ignored command there, and you get the game where you mostly wait instead of thinking or doing anything meaningful. Now I may be exagerating a bit, but the game really felt very tedious from the bery beginning. And there was not much story or character development to distract from that. Sure by the end I kinda pieced together what's going on and warmed up to the girl. But it took a while. Literally. This game could be 2 to 3 times shorter easily. Now if you're into achievements, then not only will you have to solve every puzzle and watch every ending. You'll have to fail every puzzle as well. Which means playing through every puzzle at least twice. More if you can't figure out the solution quckly enough or accidentally misclick and fail. Which means watching all those slow animations all over again. Prepare to be patient with this game. Now the kicker is if you finished the game and watched the final ending your save locks up. Every time you load it you'll just watch the ending again. If you want to revisit some of the puzzles or finish up the remaining achievements the only option is to start all over again. 10/10 game design.
Day 8 of the October Horror Reviews: Last Labyrinth Ever wanted to feel absolutely powerless while someone else does all the heavy lifting? Ever wanted to yell at a little girl because she picked up a block you just had her put in the right spot? Ever wanted to feel stupid when you don't figure out a puzzle and then watch yourself die in multiple horrific ways? You can do all that and more with Last Labyrinth! Last Labyrinth is the passion project of a small dev team in Japan... with a surprising cast list including Stefanie Joosten. The game really feels like a brutal test of your problem-solving skills, with an equally brutal punishment if you don't figure it out. Every level has a unique death, and some of them are pretty gruesome. You're stuck in a chair. Bound to it, unable to move other than holding a little button in your hands that runs the laser pointer attached to your head, and using your head to basically be your communication with someone who does not speak your language. You communicate with this person by pointing at what you want her to do, and nodding or shaking your head as she points at what you're pointing at. Your job is to make it through a labyrinth of various puzzles that get progressively more difficult as you go along, some of them require a pretty functional understanding of mathematics, some of them require a bit of common sense, etc. Interestingly enough, the game doesn't actually punish you for dying: In fact, if you die at every level, you get to see a grail slowly fill up with your blood and you get an achievement... plus, probably a special ending? Still figuring that part out! Graphics are great, they feel foreboding and mesh very well with the sound design, not only that, but all the assets seem pretty original which is another big check but a lot of horror games nowadays just copy-paste assets from other places. Speaking of: Technically, this isn't a recent game. This one came out in 2019, but it's still one of those games that endures and can be both very frustrating and very rewarding. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a game that makes you work quite so hard to figure out minute details. 7/10
