Take control of a RailGod, a living, sentient abomination forged through forgotten, arcane rituals: a relentless, horrific fusion of beast and machine. Yet the train is your haven, where you must cleanse your fragile mind from the all-consuming Madness and nurture the symbiotic bond with this terrifying entity. As you perform dark deeds, you will be rewarded with power, evolving alongside your RailGod into an unstoppable force, ready to defy the alien Gods themselves.

Customize and upgrade your RailGod with specialized Carriages, building your mobile fortress piece by piece. Each Carriage offers strategic advantages, and player creativity will shape the train into a powerful stronghold against the horrors of Hysterra.

As a GodKeeper, increase your symbiosis with your RailGod to harness your management, exploration, and trapping skills. Confine and sacrifice Deathless enemies to receive Dark Gifts, gaining the upper hand against the eldritch creatures threatening your path to godhood. Discover the stories of other survivors, follow their paths, and gain unique perks!

Each stop you choose to explore is unique, as time and space are warped by the Great Old Ones. Journeying on the Eternal Railways brings new areas, hidden dungeons, and diverse challenges. Plan your trips ahead, or you might end up wandering madly through the lands of Hysterra.

Combine melee and ranged combat with powerful spells and unique Dark Gifts granted by your RailGod. Team up to take down terrifying monsters and cultists in epic battles.

Game is dead, rumors say devs had problems with the publisher and ran for the hills. dont support until you hear anything otherwise.
Unfortunately this game no longer works, certain sections are totally unplayable and progress is completely blocked. The devs have left their official server and there's been no word for months that tells us anything useful either.
The game has a cool setting, but apparently all development has stopped entirely on this game. The overall design of the game is incredibly disjointed. Lots of absolutely baffling game design decisions. Like one example: In order to make a smelting station just to melt copper and iron, you have to locate something called a "fomalhaut core". Fomalhaut is the name of a star. Other then that, you as a player are given zero guidance what it is, where it is, and how you obtain one. WIthout a fomalhaut core you're completely softlocked from advancement as all the higher tier stuff needs copper and iron. Fomalhuat cores are found by: switching from the first track to the middle (higher difficulty) track. Most players won't even understand how to switch tracks. Then when on the middle track you need to roll down the track until you reach a certain type of location, and get off the train. Then you need to find a magic circle on that map, and if you've come there only during a FEW certain hours, you run into a magical creature trapped in the circle. You have to kill it to get fomalhaut cores. And here's where it gets more ludicrous. The creature is completely immune from any normal damage types, except one specific magical type of damage. To make magical weapons that can hurt it, you'd have to have purchased unlocked and built a whole series of crafting stations. There's no guidance on what specific crafting stations, and in what order to buy them. You can often buy a crafting station blueprint and then find out you need a whole host of other stuff that's made on other crafting stations to even make the one you just bought. Alternately, instead of making magic weapons you can unlock a specific magic spell. How do you do that? by capturing a specific type of enemy and then sacrificing them to the train's engine. These enemies can only be captured by throwing iron nets on them. Iron. The thing you can't smelt because you need to kill this creature, to get fomalhaut cores. You can find some iron nets as random loot, but it takes forever. Unlocking the magic spell turned out to be the easier way to kill this creature. The first three crafting stations I bought turned to be things I couldn't make because I needed OTHER crafting stations. The entire game is full of this stuff. Deliberately obtuse baffling stuff, softlocked behind a bewildering maze of dependencies. How they expected the average person to blunder their way through it is also baffling. And the following is a bit of a spoiler. At the very end of the current state of the game, you enter a magical portal and end up on an evil train racing down the tracks. You have to fight your way through the train, and fight three different bosses. When you enter the train, the game strips you of ALL your gear. Armor, weapons, healing items... everything. You start a series of three boss fights... naked. With none of the equipment you just spent the entire game making. And according to a statement passed on from the devs, this was a deliberate decision. With no explanation for the logic behind this. Oh, and to make things even better, if you quit you were supposed to end up back at the magic portal with all your gear on the ground... but due to a bug, it deleted half the gear. People just ragequit the game over that alone.
It is since August 2025 (probably more, i didn't checked the exactly month that this happend) that there are NO updates, and NO comunication whatsover... some people found some tiny bits of info on their discord, but nothing tells us what the heck is going on. At this point, it's almost 9 months that the game is receiving NOTHING... you can consider it another abandonware. SHAME ON YOU.
No updates since launch.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3671742836 Right. So, my first thoughts regarding RailGods of Hysterra after about an hour are as follows: The story seems pretty decent. Having Lovecraft setting up literal sleeper cells of people trying to find solutions to the Eldritch apocalypse via the dreamworld is a cool concept. Players waking up from the dream state to find the world largely destroyed does jibe with this. There is a character creator, and the options there are decent. Nothing too extravagant, but enough to personalize your experience a little bit. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3671742861 The visuals are dark and gothic, which is appropriate to the setting. Your personal RailGod, itself an Eldritch horror, is very cool looking. Having to feed it "mush" from things you kill, if not actual living sacrifices, does provide a nice twist to how you will maintain your train, which is your base of operations. Crafting is intuitive. You learn a blueprint and simply hold down R1 to craft said item, provided you have the necessary components. Building up your train is likewise intuitive. However, you don't need blueprints (at least not so far). You simply press B to enter base building mode and craft whatever you need on whichever railcar you're on. Which includes walls and crafting benches. Related to crafting, your personal storage space (i.e. your backpack) is probably too small for the amount of materials you will be going through as you build up the train and craft items. You are provided with adequate storage on the train and when you exit your train, there are large storage crates next to it where you can deposit materials as you explore towns or wherever you have stopped. You will however be running back and forth trying to keep your backpack reasonably available for more materials to be collected. And you share backpack space with essentials such as food. Which brings me to a mechanic I don't love: the hunger meter. It drains fast, whether you're on the train or exploring. Not a fan of that. The meter should at least drain more slowly and halt while on your RailGod. You also have a health and sanity meter. Health is self-explanatory. Sanity happens as you explore. Or rather, insanity happens. There is a device on the train which can restore your sanity though. The device itself looks insane, lol. It's like a flesh column or somesuch. I do not enjoy the default camera settings. I wish they would simply have used Q/E for that instead of tying it to the mouse scroll button. It's a hassle as it is default. Combat is basically twin stick. M1 to attack and move the cursor to aim. That's fine. Using special abilities (at least the first one) requires holding down the R key on your keyboard and feels a bit slow to engage. One other thing I personally didn't love playing this solo is having an area reset each time you enter and exit your RailGod. I wish there was an option to turn off endless respawns, at the very least. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For me, the cameras actually make this game way less enjoyable to play than it should be. I imagine you can set your own configurations which I might do moving forward, but default camera controls really hamper the actually gaming experience here. And it should also be noted that while the game feels quite polished already, it does not appear as though it will ever see future updates as apparently the development team was at odds with its publisher and also had internal issues which resulted in a large part of the team leaving the project. I don't think anyone knows the status of the development team at this point and they have definitely embraced silence as their policy when discussing the future of the game with early access adopters. Which, even if there are legal implications, posting some sort of basic status update would still be the way to go. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3671742716 As of right now, I'd consider this game's development to be suspended and likely abandoned. However, it does also seem like there is enough game here to justify a purchase if it really looks interesting to a person. Just know that whatever it is currently is likely all it will ever be. I do hope I am proven wrong however and we get some communication from somebody attached to this project. On Steam. Where people actually bought the game. I will be adopting a wait and see policy myself before really committing to playing this game further. I'd love to see the dev team restored, communications with players re-opened, and the game make its way out of early access. Only time will tell if that hope will be realized. Abandoned. Damn, because the concept and basic loop was pretty solid. Kept waiting for updates but it's been 10 months now since 'Patch 1'.... Sucks. I'd definitely revisit if things kicked back up, but I doubt it at this point.
Great idea, loved the concept, but devs abandoned game after 3 months of early access and it's far from finish of development. Gameplay loop is short, content is repeatable, controls are flimsy and after 8 hours I feel like I've seen 80% of the game. Don't buy it, not worth the price. Shame on you, devs... wasted potential.
Great idea, but SWIFTLY Abandoned and left to rot by Devs that just don't care. I wouldn't recommend buying from these Devs they ditched this and all support faster then Elon ruined Twitter..
