Players can engage in quick exhibition matches, full seasons, or longer-term modes that involve building and managing squads over time. There is also a team-building mode inspired by collectible-card systems, though notably without aggressive monetization, allowing players to unlock and assemble teams through gameplay progression rather than microtransactions. Customization options for kits, emblems, and teams further reinforce the simulation-focused intent. The moment-to-moment gameplay, however, is where Handball 21 becomes more divisive. While the fundamentals of passing, shooting, blocking, and positioning are present, the execution often lacks the fluidity expected from a fast, high-contact sport. Animations can feel stiff, with transitions between actions sometimes breaking the sense of momentum that defines real handball. The absence of dynamic commentary further reduces immersion, leaving matches feeling quieter and less dramatic than their real-life counterparts. Sound design does its job functionally, but rarely enhances the emotional stakes of a match. One of the game’s biggest hurdles is accessibility. Handball is not universally familiar, and Handball 21 provides minimal onboarding for newcomers. There is no robust tutorial system to explain rules, tactics, or positional responsibilities in depth, which makes the learning curve steeper than necessary for players outside established handball communities. For experienced fans of the sport, this may not be an issue, but for newcomers, the lack of guidance can make the game feel opaque and unintuitive during early hours. Despite these shortcomings, Handball 21 does succeed in capturing the strategic side of the sport. Tactical formations, substitutions, and pacing decisions matter, especially in longer modes. When the systems align, matches can produce moments that feel genuinely reflective of real handball, particularly in slower, more methodical build-ups and defensive standoffs. Players who invest time into understanding the mechanics may find a deeper layer of strategy beneath the rough surface. Overall, Handball 21 is a sincere but uneven sports simulation. Its strongest asset lies in its official licensing and commitment to representing handball as it is played professionally, rather than simplifying it for mass-market appeal. At the same time, clunky animations, inconsistent AI, and limited presentation polish prevent it from fully capturing the speed, intensity, and excitement of the sport. For dedicated handball fans eager to see their favorite teams and leagues represented in video game form, it offers a rare and valuable opportunity. Ich weiß, das Spiel ist irgendwie weit vom echten Handball entfernt. Und das ist schade. Manager-Aspekte gibt es leider auch nur kaum, Spieler-Karrieren gibt es gar nicht. Anfangs war ich daher stark enttäuscht von dem Spiel. Aber nach und nach, mit den Spielzügen, neuen persönlichen Aufgaben und der Verwendung von heutigen Superstars macht das Spiel für zwischendurch mir zumindest doch Spaß zu spielen. Es gäbe eine Menge Aspekte, die ich mir für ein Handball 26 / 27 oder irgendwas wünschen würde, die hier nicht vertreten sind, aber vorerst kann ich mich mit Handball 21 zufrieden geben.
