The announcement of Raiden Fighters Remix collection (not coming to steam as of now) made me come back to rant about this abortion. It is truly unbelievable what dotemu has been allowed to do with this collection. Where to start... This game was released on android devices like the ouya console in 2012. It sold for $3.99. This is a port of that exact game. I believe the extra 6 bucks got us a rapid fire button, worse emulator, and a scanline option. Inexplicably, it ran better on android. It needs to be mentioned that the fighters games ran at 54fps, this was the root of the emulation problems for years. The 2008 360 release of Raiden Fighters Aces had the option to play in both 60 and 54. Success was the publisher for that title, they have a credit on this game for some reason even though I don't see how they were involved unless they had some kind of joint licence going back to the Aces title. If that is the case, why no port of the 360 version? 54 on a freesync monitor would be amazing, but no, we get the android version. This steam version originally launched with terrible stuttering and lag, inconsistent framerate, and crashes. They released a patch at some point that seemed to fix the crashes but makes the game want to sit somewhere around 57fps. Not a solid 57 mind you, so still basically unplayable in this state. The most comical thing is someone released a fix (you can find the post in the guides section) that actually makes the game run at a smooth 60fps. There are still 2 problems with this, the audio is desynced from what I can tell, and the game is actually harder than it should be since its running 6fps faster than designed. But guess what the fix is....assets from dotemu's mobile (android) release of the game. So Dotemu has its own fix (atleast for fps, stutter, lag) but wont update this steam release. Apparently its a whole different emulator as well? Baffling. Overall both builds are lazy and an insult to consumers. No way to add credits in either build (locks you at 2 continues i think), mobile has an option to start with 5 lives but i don't think the steam build does, the steam build added a rapid fire button but if you use the mobile wrap this option is gone, I think you can only see the intros in the mobile build. There's more to mention but you get the idea... This criminal collection has been on steam for 10 years.... hopefully Moss can get the license away from Dotemu and bring their new remix collection to steam next year.
With the new Raiden Fighters Remix collection out today for the Switch and PS4/5 and skipping the PC, presumably because this collection is still for sale, I decided to go back and have a deeper look into a collection I only played briefly years ago while I usually play these games on MAME. So, yeah, it's not great. The Raiden Fighters series of games originally played at 54fps in the arcades and are 57 here. While that sounds like nitpicking, it does make a difference. Because even in a genre that is known for difficult games, the Raiden Fighters games are ball-breakingly difficult and them playing faster only makes it more so. Like, the person who designed these games probably hates humanity. To add to this torture, for some strange reason all the games in this collection are limited to 3 credits in arcade mode. Finishing the games are close to impossible. The achievements for finishing the games are all sitting at around 1.5% of players unlocked after 11 years for sale, and let's assume half of those unlocks came from a cheat engine and bump that down to under 1%. Why do this? If you want to make players earn it, at least do the thing some shmups do and award another permanent credit with each level beaten. However, you can set the frame rate to 54fps via Nvidia control panel (ugh) or Riva Tuner (yes), and as an added bonus the fps will stay locked to 54 much better than the game and its constant fluctuations between 55-57. So that's one problem solved. The game also doesn't like saving some of your settings, I found the settings file UserDefault.xml in AppData/Local/raidenfighters and there's a lot you can change in there, however it doesn't really matter as the game writes over it every launch, and if you set the file to read only you can't choose any of the Fighters games in the menu, just Raiden. Ouch. Just keep in mind you'll have to turn off texture filtering every launch (and you will, right??) and you should never set the music to HD, otherwise your resolution will be reset to potato every launch. Yeah, just weird and sloppy. Pick pick pick. So why am I still recommending it? Well, these are four great games even though they'll make you grit your teeth until they crack (don't even get me started on bullet visibility, or the complete lack thereof), and it's a 10 dollar package that goes on sale for a buck ninety-nine. Really, it's not so bad at all for $1.99. Lock your framerate to 54 and you'll live.
horrible ports, ♥♥♥♥ dotemu
achievements (some) doesn`t seem to work (unlock). so no, this game is too hard to give it positive review knowing this
I bought this game just to get a nostalgic feeling only to realize that how BRUTAL the game's difficulty is. I thought at least I could shamelessly revive countless times to reach the end since I had never finished it, but somehow after I revived a couple of times, the game would simply cease to ask me if I want to continue and sent me straight to the menu.
Raiden Legacy, developed and published by DotEmu, is a compilation that gathers four legendary arcade shooters under one collection: Raiden, Raiden Fighters, Raiden Fighters 2, and Raiden Fighters Jet. It serves as both a nostalgic return for long-time fans and an accessible entry point for new players interested in the golden age of vertical shoot-’em-ups. The moment the player takes off, the familiar intensity of classic arcade design takes over, blending simple controls with relentless difficulty that demands focus, timing, and precision. Each title included retains its unique identity, with subtle variations in weapon systems, enemy design, and scoring mechanics that demonstrate how the series evolved over the years. Despite their age, the games still deliver an adrenaline rush that only the most finely tuned arcade shooters can replicate. The gameplay remains the defining feature of the Raiden series, and DotEmu’s collection does well to preserve that spirit. The fast-paced, high-risk rhythm of dodging incoming waves of bullets while collecting power-ups and maximizing score multipliers feels as immediate and satisfying as ever. Raiden Fighters Jet, in particular, stands out for its fluid motion and the refined balance between offense and defense. The sense of progression through skill mastery rather than artificial rewards makes every victory earned through genuine improvement. For fans of old-school arcade philosophy, these games embody the pure essence of challenge and reward. They ask for commitment and memorization, encouraging players to study enemy patterns and weapon effectiveness until survival becomes instinctive. In that respect, Raiden Legacy captures not just a set of games, but an entire mindset from the era when every credit counted. Visually, the collection is faithful to its roots. The pixel art and colorful explosions maintain their retro charm, giving the screen that familiar chaos of flashing bullets and destructible enemy formations. The detail in the sprites, the smooth scrolling backdrops, and the energetic special effects all stand as reminders of the technical artistry of the 1990s arcades. DotEmu’s presentation layers a cleaner interface and slightly modernized menus without altering the original look. The soundtrack, filled with intense electronic and rock-inspired beats, still drives the action forward with pulse-pounding momentum. These audio-visual touches maintain the essence of the originals while offering a smoother presentation for modern platforms. For players seeking an authentic recreation of the arcade experience, the nostalgic fidelity here is one of the strongest aspects of the package. However, the collection is not without shortcomings. The Steam version, in particular, has drawn criticism for its performance inconsistencies, such as stuttering, frame rate fluctuations, and occasional audio desynchronization. Since these games depend heavily on precision timing and rhythm, even small technical issues can undermine the overall experience. While DotEmu’s intention was to bring the classics to a new generation with accessibility options like customizable controls, multiple difficulty modes, and training options, the execution does not always match the ambition. Some users also found the limitations in credit availability and lack of deeper customization options to be frustrating, especially compared to more polished re-releases in the genre. These flaws don’t make the game unplayable, but they remind the player that emulation of arcade titles still requires care and refinement to meet modern expectations. Despite its imperfections, Raiden Legacy succeeds as a preservation effort. Having four of the series’ most iconic titles bundled together makes for a generous offering, providing hours of replay value through scoring challenges and difficulty variations. The inclusion of different ship types, each with unique firing patterns and strategies, adds further depth to the collection. Players who are drawn to the pursuit of perfection—where one wrong move can end a run and one flawless performance feels like a triumph—will find themselves returning repeatedly to sharpen their reflexes. This collection thrives on the enduring appeal of simplicity mixed with punishing difficulty, a hallmark of the shoot-’em-up genre that modern games often overlook in favor of accessibility. In the end, Raiden Legacy stands as both a tribute and a time capsule. It revives the spirit of the arcade era when design was driven by pure challenge and spectacle. While not a perfect remaster, it still manages to encapsulate the thrill of dodging curtains of bullets, the satisfaction of unleashing fully powered weapons, and the exhilaration of narrowly escaping destruction. For players who crave nostalgia or simply want to experience a foundational piece of arcade history, this collection is an essential journey. It may not achieve flawless technical execution, but its heart lies firmly in the right place—celebrating a series that helped define a genre and proving that even decades later, the roar of a Raiden ship still carries the same electrifying energy as it did in the arcades of old.
