Intense VR rhythm game, though the trailer implies it's more of a combat game than a rhythm game; don't be mistaken, this is a beatsaber style rhythm game. That said, it does give the feeling that you're in combat pretty well, just don't expect to get creative with your fighting style, that's not what this game is. The weapons are fun, 3 slashing weapons and 3 bludgeoning weapons, but really the only difference between the two sets is that slashing scoring is based on precision + timing, while bludgeoning scoring is based on how hard you hit + timing. There are 3 sets of weapons: long one-handed, dagger length one-handed, and two-handed. The first two aren't strongly different, but the two-handed weapons really shine the most in my eyes, probably the thing I'd come back to this game for. If you've played Gorn, expect a two handed weapon of that style, but with a glaive on one end and a mace on the other. Most of the game isn't that distinguished from other VR rhythm games outside of the music and visuals, but this sticks out for me in a good way. Do note, it says "180 degree play", but several moments in the campaign are 360 degree. You *will* be turning around all the way for that, and could get a cable wrapped around if you have one. Edit: After reading other reviews, I want to confirm that there is a freeplay mode now, and you can choose any weapon for any song which is nice. There's not a lot of songs unfortunately, but it's not *too* few, could definitely use more though. Note: Game was received for free for playtesting through a third party. Devs had no interaction with me beyond providing the key.
A fantastic VR rhythm game that I will absolutely be revisiting. First off I will say, this game HEAVILY benefits from having a wireless VR setup. Some of the sections are fully 360 and due to having a Valve Index, I got tangled up in my wire quite a bit. An optional forward-only mode or some option to turn with the joystick would be very much appreciated. Aside from that, the game is FUN! Each level gives you a different weapon to mess around with and they all feel fairly unique to use, such as swords, boxing gloves, a two handed axe, etc. The combat feels responsive and hitting enemies on beat with the music is super satisfying. The music is really good too, definitely got me in the fighting mood. At the time of this review I have not finished it yet, but I will absolutely be revisiting it on my days off for sure. Some minor nitpicks/issues: -some of the "perfect" slashes/hits didn't feel on beat with the music, but it was not a common issue. -Attacks that required both hands to block didn't always respond properly even though my weapons were lined up perfectly, which resulted in me getting hit. -Some enemies felt way too close even though the hit indicator wasn't aligned yet, which resulted in me swinging too soon. -The impact sounds weren't as "punchy" as I had hoped, but that is a very minor nitpick. -Constantly got tangled up in my headset cable during the 360 sections, as stated before. (Won't be a problem once I get the Steam Frame but just thought it was worth mentioning. Overall though, a very fun and addicting experience that I absolutely recommend to anyone who enjoys rhythm games (especially Beat Saber) or melee combat games in general. Looking forward to playing more!
Rager brings a really fun twist to the usual rhythm game in vr rather than watching blocks fly in from across the room In this game, you’ll find enemies surrounding you in a full 360 degree area this means you have to depend on your fast reaction time and not relying on just memorizing patterns one aspect I really liked is that each level introduces new weapons one level you could have a sword next one you could have maces this feature keeps the game fun and new and it wont get boring as fast as some games you keep changing your strategy based on the weapons you are using It’s nice to play a game where you’re not stuck using the same items like sabers all the time plus the music is great it's full of songs that makes the game better i would try this if you like games like beat saber pistol whip or synth riders
Note: I received this game for free as an early access test A fun twist on the VR rhythm genre. It feels great to play and does a few unique things. The enemy design is terrific. I wasn't expecting the 360-degree fights or two-handed weapons, either. When you get into a flow state with rhythm combat, it's pretty fantastic. It's not very long (you can complete all of the levels in an hour) but the game is fun enough that you'll want to come back on harder difficulties and chase higher scores. This is subjective, but for me personally, the soundtrack was a mixed bag. It worked well with the game, but I was hoping for some more bangers. There's a lot of potential here. AI voiceovers make me a sad panda. If I had to give it a rating, it would be 4.25 stars or 8/10 Interested to see how this game evolves!
sick game. i beat the game on hard in around 45 minutes, but it was a lot of fun and i hope it gets more content. the two handed levels are definitely harder to get used to, but i cant tell if the clunkiness is just a skill issue. really really good foundation though for an early access game
I was asked to playtest RAGER and I did... On the HARDEST DIFFICULTY. First off, you should make sure you have a large playspace cause this game makes you MOVE... this is the first VR title ive ever hurt myself in and I play a lot of VR and stretch and exercise regularly.. STRETCH YOUR ARMS, LEGS AND NECK yooo. this game tracks your Kcal burn and asked you to slice, block, dip and dodge a barrage of enemies to the soundtrack of AI dystopia.. On the hardest difficulty this game makes you beg for mercy. Of course you get better over time but it continues to ramp up the intensity and challenge throughout. So in summary, I hurt my leg, knocked over my headset stand, ripped the cable out of the headset, ripped my cable rig out of the ceiling and burned almost 500 Kcal in total. You have been warned.
This game is fun, it made me realise how unfit I am but I enjoyed the gameplay so it keeps you going! The swords are kool to use and the simplistic gameplay means it's easy to pick up and play. There is also a leader board if you are good and competitive enough to get yourself to the top!
I thought it was another beat saber game (which it kinda is) but HOLY was this one fun. You basically fight like robots, so there's slashing, punching, stabbing, etc. When I tell you, the rush I felt "fighting" in this rhythm, my god, I felt so cool/powerful. Like it was soooo immersive and just felt so good to see all these enemies rush at you, and you slashing and punching, it just all felt good. Like you were a superhero or smth. You also work up a sweat, since you have to do FULL 360s while fighting, which is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cool. I see no downsides to this game at the moment, I haven't gotten to the final boss yet, so Idk how much more content this game has after the first 3 bosses.
received free code for testing, but will be buying on psvr2 next year. pretty fun rhythm game, certainly a more unique and physical take on the genre than I've seen. not a TON of content yet, but what's here is fun and certainly challenging enough that even if you can sprint through the main campaign in an hour or so, beating it all and getting high accuracy/force/score ranks as well as beating it on higher difficulties will definitely take awhile longer. be prepared to create some space as it does feature a 360 degree playing area without any sort of snap or smooth turning. hit detection was pretty good, tho not perfect.
i will note i got the game for free as part of testing rager as a game has some good aspects that i would like to go over but also has some problems that prevent me from recommending the game, first of all the game does clearly communicate which enemies are which via color eg, what weapons are needed to defeat them and if you have to block or swing, the music is serviceable and the core gameplay loop works well enough, though the use of ai for lyrics and possably writing takes me out of the game and prevents me from being able to recommend the game, along with it being 360 for all of the campaign levels making it awkward for some smaller vr setups.
