I did not receive the product for free. I paid for it because that's what friends do. THE GOOD BIT THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO BUY THE GAME This is a 2D platformer that has only been recently released. I have been patiently waiting for it to come out for months, I’ve been avoiding asking to play developer builds from him for months just so I can write an honest review. This will be an unusual review and will probably read like a garbled mess because I’ve only had the game for an hour and to be honest, I would rather spend my time playing the game than writing this review 😉 I know the developer personally and knew the developer when he first culminated the idea of this game. He had an inspiration, a couple years and just about the amount of gusto a man would probably need to take down a horde of buffalo. If you learn anything from this review, from what is written before you, please learn that my friend LEARNED TO FREAKING PROGRAM FROM SCRATCH just so he could make this game. He did that. Learned it. He wanted it and he did it and the GAME IS FREAKING AWESOME I'M SO EXCITED!!! You start off in a tutorial, just your little space dude and some simple platforms to get you into the game. It’s a nice pacing to allow you to explore all the controls without feeling pressure from any obstacles. Once you pass through the first gate, you enter level 1, and the story mode begins. The platforming is tough, it’s a tough game. The game reminds me of a subtle middle ground between “Super Meat Boy” and “I wanna be the Guy” which both carry their own respective reputations. It’s refreshing to experience the tighter wall jumps, but paired with aesthetics that look like they could be a massive upgrade to IWBTG. I honestly cannot say how impressed I am with the controls. It's so funny looking back at those clunky gravity settings and testing out all the options you had discovered. To go from that to a really smooth functioning game that I can happily speedrun for hours and hours and without feeling bad about dying all the time because when I die I know it’s not the game screwing me over. Paired with a few minor bugs and graphics issues is nothing short of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ miracle. I really do hope this review shed light on the incredible work you’ve done to complete this passion project. The menu is so pretty to look at, nice and easy to read with a plethora of selections at your disposal such as starting a new game, going to level select or accessing toggleable options like Ghost Timer Mode or Easy Mode. Music. Loads of it. Beautifully written pieces by none other than the developer himself. He has always had a talent for music and we regularly jam on Skype when the time allows us to. His passion for music is reflected really well in the game. And as there is an included mute buttom (M), if you don’t like it, you can put on your own music. You have to understand I played this game way before it came out on Steam, when it was a young and flowering ".exe" file in the sea of other projects he had begun working on at the time. I cannot express in words the amount of frustration this guy has put himself through to make this game happen. This has been his lifeblood for several years. Every single problem. Every massive hurdle. You did it dude, you bloody did it! The achievements are also sick by the way. 15 of them, won’t spoil anything, some easy, some hard. I didn't even realise you could do acheivements and the artwork for them which I believe you did yourself looks stunning :) And thanks for including me (PolarisTR) in the credits, I don’t really deserve any credit since all I did was bombard you with inquisitive questions and slow you down :D Cheers Ps. I am now going to spend at least 100 hours now to beat ALL the developer records. You're on! THE BAD BIT THAT YOU DON’T WANT TO READ BECAUSE IT’S PROBABLY NOT IMPORTANT BECAUSE YOU SHOULD JUST BUY MY FRIENDS GAME BUT YOU NEED TO KNOW THESE THINGS ANYWAY • Would be nice to map controls for accessibility • Using a mouse to access menu options would be helpful • Some small graphics bugs that will likely be patched • You can only use left and right arrows in the ‘Level Select’ menu. It doesn’t alter gameplay in any way. • No options menu, can’t adjust music/game audio levels (can mute game music with M) • The big one for me is Leaderboards. I can’t remember this was ever mentioned during development and I have no idea what sort of feat it would be but would love to compare scores with friends I’ve never reviewed a game in the detail that I have before, but now you know. I’ve tried to be as honest as I can. This game this game might not be your cup of tea, but after everything I’ve said it’s only a couple quid, please support the developer, support my friend.
Fun platformer with unique ghost mode allowing you to try and beat your best time. Luckily it has an easy noob friendly mode for people like me :)
This game can sneak up and grab you. Sts very addictive and positively a great thief of time. Had to pull myself away. It is fresh and fun.
Rage Among the Stars is a fun, frustrating, fast paced platformer! After being stranded on a strange world you must make your way through levels to find your way home, meeting unusual and intriguing characters along the way. The normal game mode is definitely a challenge for someone like me who isn't used to this kind of game so the inclusion of the easier mode is definitely a huge plus in my eyes and makes for good practice in completing the normal mode later on. I love the music for this game, it sets the mood perfectly in my eyes and the character designs are fun and quirky! All in all I think this game would make an excellent addition to anyone's steam library, I'm absolutely happy to have it in mine!
This game is perfect for everyone who likes old-styled platformers and doesn't want the game to be too easy to beat. Some levels are just demanting but some require a lot of patience :P It is worth to buy this game because it gives fun and isn't expensive :D
A fun and challenging platformer with a variety of gimmicks and a great soundtrack.
Mt buddy STS mentioned Rage Among The Stars to me so I thought I'd take a look. I LOVE space themes in games but I was surprised to see how imaginative and funny the characters looked. And I thought 'oh this is easy" but ugh I am still jumping the spikes! You will enjoy this game and it's very inexpensive (maybe $4 or so though that can change) so I would definitely give it a try! I'm halfway through World 1, but was glad to learn about the available Easy Mode (for noobs like me). The added flower on the character was an adorable touch :). I am not good at platformers, but I have to say, I really enjoy playing this one. I lost track of time playing this game and definitely recommend it to others! I love the controls and the physics involved. It allows for a lot of creativity and strategy when solving the levels. The art is also beautiful, and I'm proud of all the work that went into this game. Also, congrats Matt on creating such an awesome game! It's amazing to see how far you've come from when I first saw this game during its development stages. It's rare I run into somebody who sees one of their creative endeavors through. I tip my hat off to you sir, you truly deserve the positive feedback coming your way. I'm excited to see where you carry this knowledge forward in your future projects :) I will post a more updated review when I beat the game (because I die too much lol).
Nice game! Miss theses old schools games I used to play on Internet. So hard to complete tho! Probably why there's the word rage in the title.
The man who made this game is the kinda guy who would stick his fingers in your spaghetti instead of using a fork, and you have to sit there awkwardly thinking to yourself "did that just happen?" you try to move on with conversation but you really cant get past it, just like some of the levels in this game. This is a difficult yet fun game, in the same vein as Super Meat Boy. If its too hard for you there is an easy mode so you could still enjoy it as a casual platformer.
