*I'm a kickstarter Backer!
"Rad N' Ready!"
Rad Rodgers: World One is a retro inspired 2D platformer by the developers Interceptor Entertainment, the same devs that brought us the Rise of the Triad 2013 remake... Don't worry though! This game is NOT glitchy and buggy how ROTT was on launch. As someone that grew up playing games like Wolfenstien3D, DOOM II, and Commander Keen, it was easy for me to get into this and enjoy playing it. I did not play it too much while it was still in development, as I knew it would be slightly different when the final game was released. You traverse some very detailed and beautiful levels. Now my I built my PC on a small budget almost 4 years ago. Playing new games tends to stress the old machine out. I can run this game on high settings, but at like 10FPS. With everything set to lowest as possible I was able to keep it running at around 60FPS most of the time. The game still looked good though! The animations were good, the sounds were great, and that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mother f*cking SOUNDTRACK! So I pledged $17 in the kickstarter, so I can get early access, artbook, 3D Realms Arcade Collection, some other little useless things, my name in the credits, and my main reason, the Soundtrack! It's no lie, I'm a huge fan of Andrew Hulshult and his work. I loved his remastered work of the ROTT soundtrack, love his work on the up coming game DUSK, and this games soundtrack is f*cking amazing as well! Now the dialogue is corny as hell, but what did you expect? It's all funny in it's own way, and takes quotes/sayings from other classic games. There is also lots of swearing, so don't be letting the kids play this gory fowled mouthed game (or do, I won't judge.) Now if you are BAD at platforming games, you won't enjoy this. There is lots of platforming in this game, and sometimes it can be confusing on where you are supposed to go, or what you are supposed to jump/climb on. This game does not hold your hand in traversing the levels. Your only help is an arrow sign in the background. This also gives you chances to explore and try to find secret areas in the game. You will also go through puzzles called "The Pixelverse" where you go through the games "coding" to fix a glitch in the game to progress. None of these were ever hard and are straight forward to complete. The final boss battle is also very interesting to fight, though it does lack in powerups during the fight. Having completed the game, I've only been able to 100% complete the first level, and get about 80-97% on the other levels on Normal Difficulty. The game says I've completed about 81% of the game my first go through in the 5 hours that I've played. (2 hours was early access for 2 levels.)
"You know those games that go beep when you're about to die. BEEP BEEP BEEP!"
Now here are my issues. Notice how that game is called "World One"? That's because that is ALL IT IS! It's only the first world. That is 6 levels, and 1 boss level. You can complete this game in about 4 hours or less! As someone that paid $17 for this, I feel a bit cheated, but like I said I mostly wanted the OST. For $11.99 ($12.99 CAN) it might be a little too high for some people for how short the game is, and I fully agree on that. Most of the actual time that you would even sink into this game would be getting 100% on every level, on all 3 difficulties. A minor issue I had was I constantly lost track of my aim cursor in the maps. It's just a basic white cross, that when you experience some explosions or lots of action on screen, or the camera moves or shakes, I lost my cursor, then sat there for a few seconds just wiggling the mouse around trying to find it again. Like I said it's just a minor issue and could just be me. Another minor issues, that could just be full well my fault on me sucking at platformers, is I've had some issues with the platforming and grabbing onto ledges. Now sometimes you can grab onto a ledge and pull yourself up, and sometimes you can't, even though both ledges looked the same. This tended to make some platforming sections frustrating when you were like a micro inch off the platform, and could not grab onto the ledge, but then the next ledge you jump onto you were like a foot away and you grab and pull yourself up. This also made trying to find some secrets hard, cause you can't grab that ledge. Some ledges also seem IMPOSSIBLE to get to, as they are too far or too high to jump up to. Again this is probably just me sucking at platformers, and not seeing the obvious ledge I'm supposed to jump to. PROS: - Classic Retro Platformer. - Combat is fun, but can be easy. - Platforming feels solid most times. - Levels have tons of detail, and very high quality. (Best looking platformer in years!) - Tons of references and secrets to retro/older games. - 5 fun weapons. - 100% is a real challenge! - Andrew Hulshult OST is to die for! - Achievements. CONS: - Older PCs or low range PCs won't be able to run this on max settings. - Platforms are a hit or miss on which can actually be grabbed onto. - The Pixelverse puzzles are really easy. - You can kill enemies from off screen. - Only 5 Enemy types. - Some jumps seem impossible to make. - Only 6 levels and boss level! - Can be beat in 4 hours or less! - No Steam Trading Cards. For the faults though, its still one of the best platformers I've playing in a long time, and enjoy the soundtrack greatly. I recommend this for everyone when it's ever on sale!

This was a game that I backed on kickstarter and was excited for. I forced myself to try and finish it but the gameplay just isn't fun and I ultimately gave up. The levels become very stale after the first couple once you realize that there isn't any depth to the gameplay. The hitboxes on some enemies just didn't make any sense. Voice lines are clever but recycled, once you hear the same line the 3rd time it loses the charm. Lastly the boss fight was terrible. There is a specific segment where you are supposed to run away with no indication and if you didn't know this it is an insa-death. Just bad design all around.
I have not played much of this title yet, playing the first level and a little of level 2 but I thought I'd drop a quick review to say how impressed I am with the game at it's current development state. Smooth animations and responsive controls, some really quite nice character models and visuals and some complex level design in the 25 or so minutes I've played. The voice acting is also really quite good. If there is one suggestion I have for the devs it would be that seeing as how they are not shying away from voilence or innuendo that when you kill an enemy that some sort of Gibbing would be better than the death animations they are currently using. Other than that a great game and a promising title as it continues to develop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRpQhd2edp8 EDIT: It has been confirmed by the devs that further "worlds" will be sold as DLC, each with different stories and mechanics. Just to let anyone buying aware this is the plan for the game.
it is almost as being in 1994 with Ruff'n'Tumble on my Amiga 500 :) the cool guy and the cool music and the retro parts of the game are lovely 100% recommendation
Great platformer with a gun that has few powerups to make some real damage like "gonna fire mah laser". World One has handful of beautiful levels to blast through with Dusty ye olde pal who does the hacking stuff to open paths for Rad. Rad Rodgers feels really nice as a whole package. Gameplay is tight, visuals and art are damn great, music has metal riffs and some synthwave kind of stuff going on. Encountered only once a bug where character animation was stuck in place, but otherwise everything worked alright. However there are only 5 enemy types and boss in the game with 8 levels from which last is boss. Quite a lot of collectibles and places to go through nonetheless though achievements for 100% completion are bugged for level 4 and 8 along with there a plenty of achievements that shouldn't be in this version of the game. Instead they should be the later version "Radical Edition" which i should have actually played, but kind of though the game with extra in name has more content so that's what you get for not investigating a bit. Still this was really entertaining and lovely title which give option for child friendly language without swearing and dark humor. Will play Radical Edition later on to see how much more content there is to see and enjoy as World One gave me good times!
I love games and with good reason, when you find gems like Rad Rodgers you know why you hunt and want to play them! It is hard to say that all games are created equal when you get down to the nity gritty of it, this game has the edge over most other adventurous side scrollers out there today. The game has great witty humour, amazing splat effects with option to turn off and let us not forget the graphical effects needed to back it all up. If that isn't enough you have a story, several great twisted features and all the SFX you will need, backed by the music to boot. I do not rant or rave about many games, but this is one I will tell you to get your hands on! Rad Rodgers provides amazing replay value and fun for all ages! Personally, I can only say that this game is next to AMAZING and will surely be enjoyed by all!
I got this game free from EVGA, when i bough the GTX 1070 OC. This game is really quite the punch. I definetely recommend this to you guys. In fact modern days games are so very intense compared to 90's. This game is really great when you have a rumble pad game controller. I miss this old contra-style games. My rating for this game is 10/10 absolute satisfaction.
Rad Rogers is a love letter to the old school gamer of the '90s. The visuals, the gameplay and the music are all just right with a modern touch. Plus the childish humor makes this one a game to at least try if you feel like reliving your childhood.
