Go Go Pow... I mean Ultra Sentai Color Rangers!
First impressions: this is a cool game for such a price and early access. It's pretty much 2d Splatoon with a Sentai theme, with a hint of Bomberman vibes. Graphics and animations are smooth, movement feels good. I've tried a bit of online play and managed to find some players, the netcode was solid and the experience was fun. Couldn't find any bugs, and I have to admit it's very polished for an early access release. Let's hope the player base grows bigger, but nonetheless it'll join my collection of couch competitive party games :)
Quadricolor is a nerve-wracking action-packed 2D Platformer shooter that you can play out as a party game or with a competitive mind, just like a Super Smash Bros, but with a focus on moving through stages and shooting fast and accurately. At its core, the gameplay is super simple and lets you dive right in : there are white cells in every stage, and you must color more cells than your opponents to win the game. You can jump, dash, shield and use power-ups to help you do that. That's it... But not really, as there are a lot of ways to use and combine those mechanics that the game will explicitely teach you thanks to the Tutorial mode, or that you'll discover when playing the game. Watching Replays of the best players in the leaderboard leaves you in awe because perfecting those mechanics really leads to a beautiful gameplay where everything is faster. The demo let us try out two modes : - Time Trial where you'll play with up to 3 other players to complete stages as fast as possible to earn your place at the top of the leaderboards - Combat mode where you'll fight with 1-3 people locally or online to claim the biggest territory in the stage by shooting them with your color The release delivered on everything the demo promised us. The two modes are more fleshed out, there are new maps to play in Time Trial tournaments that rotate every so often. Everything that was present during it has been polished, but the best addition for me is the full-fledged story mode that plays out like an arcade game : finishing the story once is good, but what you really want is to retry it because beating the last enemy only reveals the true opponents : every other player. It's a fight for the best score where you'll need to play perfectly to grab the last points you need to get the World Record. When you lose, you will spend Continue Credits, but not using any grants you more score after each level, and the enemy AI is really unforgiving in the later stages so you really need to focus, especially on Ultra Mode. Whether you're in for the arcade game nostalgia, to find another game to beat your friends in, or to try a competitive platformer, I really think you should give Quadricolor a try, especially with its really cheap cost.
