Pyre

Ok, what do I say about Pyre? I don't recall when I last played something this unique. If you're like me, and you played all the rest of Supergiant's games first - do NOT skip this one. And if you haven't played any of their games, this is an amazing one to start with. Pyre stands out, even from their wonderful catalogue, that's for sure. So yeah, it's a sports-based RPG. And it's really fricking good at that. Reducing the gameplay to its most simplistic core (and trust me, that's doing it a disservice), you generally have two parts: 1) The Rites, which are kind of like superpower-enhanced games of basketball, if you will. Two pyres (the "baskets"), two teams, one fallen star (your "ball"). Get the star into your opponent's Pyre. Obviously, there's a whole lot more to it than that - a ton of different characters with different stats, abilities, small skill trees, environmental factors etc. It's super easy to pick up, but also has an incredible skill ceiling, meaning everybody can have a blast, whether you're someone new to this type of gameplay or someone who has 5000 hours in Rocket League. 2) The "story" part between the Rites, during which you travel through the lands, plan your route, make decisions, meet characters and hang out with your triumvirate, the Nightwings. This part is kinda like a visual novel. There's very little voice acting, and as such, a fair bit of reading (unsurprising, given the protagonist being called "Reader"). Needless to say: the writing is great, all characters feel unique, you'll quickly find yourself caring for a lot of them and the narrative style is truly an experience. One that you have a huge part in influencing yourself. But, if you are somebody who does not like games with slower pacing and visual novel-style aspects, then you might want to reconsider. It's like an amazing movie - no matter how good it is, if someone doesn't like sitting in front of a screen for 2 hours, the experience might not be for them. The art direction is phenomenal. This game is gorgeous and the musical score is divine. It's almost psychadelic in parts. This is art, straight up. I've played a fair share of games in my day, and I strongly recommend Pyre to anybody who is interested.
