About

Psycho-Kin is a uber-stylized, top-down tactical shooter set in an alternate-history Cold War. Swap between two linked characters to outwit enemies in tense, strategic combat, while unravelling a deep, psychological story of espionage, trauma, and redemption.

Psycho-Kin is a top-down shooter where you control two characters, switching between them by eliminating enemies strategically placed throughout the map. Each foe is linked to vital elements like doors, blocking access to key areas. Plan your kills wisely to navigate the intricate web of connections and unlock every corner of the stage. Utilize the map overview mode to visualize the links between enemies and doors, allowing you to plan your moves carefully.

Set in 1983, during an alternate Cold War where the nuclear bomb was never invented, Psycho-Kin follows Richard, a former member of an elite psychic unit created to gain the upper hand in a brutal arms race between the U.S. and Russia. Now retired, Richard is haunted by relentless nightmares and attends therapy with Rachel, a sharp and quick-witted therapist who pushes him to confront his buried past. Through their sessions, he relives harrowing missions alongside his hot-headed partner Jack, uncovering buried secrets and the true cost of his abilities as he struggles to confront his demons and escape the shadow of his former life.

Found the gameplay very satisfying and the story brilliantly captivating at times. The movement and shooting is fast and responsive allowing for fast paced level clearing and boss fights. In the standard levels, the steadily introduced mechanics allow for slower paced, more puzzle like gameplay as you figure out the best approach for each map. The boss fights themselves utilise the simple movement and shooting mechanics to create touhou-like, reaction based gameplay. As far as the story goes, it is quite intriguing being slowly introduced to the technology of the world and revealing how it has affected the protagonist (without spoiling anything). Overall, I would recommend this game for being easy to pick up and immediately satisfying.
This game is fantastic. a genuinely intriguing story with good twists, super fun and unique mechanics, and a really cool art style. the closest thing I could compare this game to is Hotline Miami but that wouldn't do it any justice. throws in new mechanics often to keep things fresh and challenge, combining them in ways that makes it feel near impossible to beat. music choices for all the levels were really good, only problem was I wish they had more songs. On a technical standpoint the game plays really well with one bug that personally gave me a lot of problems, my gun clipping into a wall that I'm hugging. super simple to avoid it just don't hug walls tight. Besides that everything about this game is downright amazing and I really do hope that is blows up, Vertygao did an amazing job on this and I hope they get the recognition they deserve for this. <3
