Reviews
Psychedelic Dream does not claim to be a game in the traditional sense. It is described as a journey involving ‘surreal dream exploration’ and puzzles. I’ve played quite a few games that fall into this category. What makes them enjoyable is unique art, music, or both. You begin at a main menu that does not quite fit a standard display. There is a settings option that leads to a screen with inactive options. Oh well… Starting the game puts you in a checkered room, with a “loading” message that persists until you move through the one open door. You then find yourself in a “dream” screen which will be different each time you enter. And, here lies the problem…. I admit that I tried only about a dozen dreams, but none elicited a “Wow!” reaction. Each felt like someone had laid out multiple instances of stock objects and textures but failed to create a cohesive experience. I’ve done a wee bit of platforming, been eaten by a shark, and pushed some objects around. Other than that, I have just wandered at a fairly slow run. Perhaps I’ve yet to encounter the more interesting scenarios, but I’m beginning to enter dreams I’ve already visited. While I appreciate the concept of a random journey, I am not finding these particular dreams to be mysterious or interesting. The good news is that, if you tire of a scene, you simply hit the ESC key to “wake up” and it is game over. Since the game is played in short bursts, there is no save function and no Steam achievements. With the current content, I would not recommend Psychedelic Dreams. The developer has indicated they plan on adding dreams which might make the experience more engaging in the future.
