About
ProtoDungeon: Episode I is a short, top-down exploration adventure game set in a mysterious abandoned castle. Explore, solve puzzles, and find your way out!
You appear in front of a castle, trapped in an unknown realm. Make your way through the castle in front of you to the familiar chapel, which you shudder at even though you can't remember why. Seek the fragments of the chapel seal to unlock it and escape. Use the swapping ability of the moonlight spell to solve puzzles and explore every nook and cranny of the castle.
ProtoDungeon takes familiar retro inspiration from Game Boy games, but also from old point-and-click adventures in its philosophy of design. Look around, explore, even take notes!

This is a tightly designed puzzle adventure set in an intriguing fantasy world of dreams, filled with mad kings and haunting chapels. The gameplay is solid and definitely gets you thinking about the best way to interact with the space. The world building has a lightness of touch but promises a lot more coming in later games. Definitely would recommend, and keeping an eye on ProtoDungeon! Works great on the Steam Deck, too!
A really quick, fun Zelda-like with a single block-swap mechanic that reveals some fiendish puzzles! Pretty Gameboy Color artstyle with music that hearkens early retro Zelda games. Despite the very short length of the game, there's a surprising depth here, narrative-wise and it's definitely worth checking out!
ProtoDungeon: Episode I is a fun bite-sized puzzle game with a retro vibe and eerie atmosphere. The art style and animation definitely draws from the GameBoy Zelda games as an inspiration. Also, it plays great on Steam Deck out of the box! I really enjoyed the vibe and swapping mechanic in this, and I'm looking forward to the next episode!
Bite-sized Zelda dungeon featuring some charming puzzles where the central mechanic is swapping your position with other objects. Biggest downside would be the runtime—I finished it in about 20 min., and I believe I saw everything the game had to offer, including the secret room. So pick it up while it's on sale if you're picky about that sort of thing. At any rate, I for one will definitely be picking up Episode II when it releases.
I enjoyed this game very much! Puzzles that had me scratching my head, an intriguing setting and plot, and an indescribable surge of nostalgia. Definitely worth a play, and definitely looking forward to more from Studio Spacefarer. Don't forget to look for the secret!
This a clever way to build up to a bigger game. Looking forward to the other mini-games and the main one later.
A polished and atmospheric little puzzle dungeon in the style of Game Boy Color Zelda titles. I enjoyed its commitment to deeply exploring a single puzzle mechanic, and the way its compact rooms often contained multiple layers of puzzles that reveal themselves as the mechanic develops. It's a very short game, but I don't really mind, and I look forward to seeing how future installments will refine what is already done well here.
Really nice throwback to GBC Zelda games. Due to its very short length (I completed it in 20 minutes), there is only a single mechanic - swap, but it's very well implemented and makes for some nice puzzles. There is a mysterious atmosphere to the whole thing and graphically it's very faithful to GBC games. Can't wait for the third episode to release, as well as the full game that this is a prequel to!
Fun Game
Good, old-fashioned, classic GBC style gameplay with a Legend of Zelda style dungeon, but more lore and intrigue. What will happen to our protagonist? Will she wake from her dream? Also runs great on steam deck! Just like the classic handheld games!
