A story full of mysteries
A black home page, monochromatic grass, monochromatic characters, text-based tutorials laid out directly, drifting characters, a character that automatically looks to the right, areas almost entirely represented by text alone, a castle you can enter without any guidance, a monochromatic interior of the castle, a second level where you don’t know where to go, lights that don’t change between morning and night, a health bar that isn’t centered, a young hero in the story who shouldn’t be able to fly but does, a chase scene with no sense of urgency, misaligned dialogue boxes, characters that haven’t changed in twenty years…

Prank is a very strange little platforming RPG, and I think its awkwardness is actually part of what makes it memorable. I play as a girl who wakes up without her memories and discovers that she has somehow grown wings. From there I am thrown into a short adventure filled with mysteries, strange locations and a very unusual presentation. I liked the feeling that I was playing something made with a deliberately odd sense of humor. The platforming itself is simple. I move through side scrolling areas, jump over obstacles and deal with enemies while gradually discovering more about the protagonist. The controls are easy to understand, which is useful because the game does not spend much time teaching me how everything works. I enjoyed the moments where the platforming and the story came together, although the movement can also feel a little rough. The bullet hell sections give the game some extra energy. Suddenly I have to pay more attention to enemy attacks and moving projectiles instead of simply making basic platforming jumps. I liked these moments because they break up the exploration and give the short adventure a few sections that require faster reactions. The presentation is easily the strangest part of the experience. A lot of the world is intentionally monochromatic, with text heavy interfaces and unusual visual decisions that make everything feel unfinished and surreal at the same time. Normally that would bother me more, but in this case the odd design choices became part of the personality. The mystery surrounding the protagonist also kept me curious about what the game was trying to reveal. My biggest issue is that the game often feels unfinished. Some areas are confusing, dialogue boxes can feel awkward and the visual presentation is inconsistent. The second area in particular can leave me unsure about where I am actually supposed to go. The story also moves so quickly that some of its mysteries do not have enough time to develop. Even with those problems, I appreciate the ambition behind such a small project. There is a real attempt to combine platforming, RPG ideas, bullet hell combat and a mystery story instead of sticking to one formula. The endless mode also gives me something to return to after the main adventure, although the core experience is still very short. Overall, Prank is a rough but surprisingly charming experimental game. I liked its strange premise, simple platforming and bizarre presentation, even when the rough edges were impossible to ignore. It is not a polished adventure, but it has enough personality to stand out, and I think the unusual style makes the short experience worth checking out. Rating: 6.3/10
