Reviews
Bovine excrement. Very much so.

most of the review here only have like 30 minutes at the most I ploughed through (it is not worth £6.19, I most likely payed around 69p during a sale) the jank! oh man the jank! zombies for apparently no reason, who you can just slide into platforming? really? choices that mean nothing! honestly it's all pretty bad all over but honestly so bad it's very nearly almost so very close to being good
gameplay sucks
Post War Dreams is a 2.5D side-scrolling action game developed and published by Playstige Interactive that immerses players in a bleak, post-apocalyptic vision of the United States. The world it presents is not one of sudden fantastical catastrophe, but rather the gradual collapse of society under economic failure, civil unrest, and the erosion of public trust. Infrastructure has crumbled, law enforcement has dissolved, and communities are left to fend for themselves amid scarcity and violence. You step into the role of Garrett Mitchell, an ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances, struggling to survive in a landscape where hope is scarce and survival often demands moral compromise. From its opening moments, the game establishes a somber tone. Environmental storytelling plays a significant role in conveying the devastation—abandoned streets littered with debris, makeshift barricades, crumbling interiors, and muted color palettes that emphasize decay. The world feels heavy, weighed down by the aftermath of systemic failure. Rather than focusing solely on explosive action, Post War Dreams attempts to ground its experience in emotional realism. The collapse is not just physical but psychological, reflected in the strained interactions between survivors and the lingering tension in every encounter. Gameplay revolves around side-scrolling exploration combined with third-person shooting mechanics. Garrett navigates through urban ruins, derelict buildings, and hostile territories populated by bandits, rogue militias, and desperate scavengers. Combat emphasizes resource management and positioning. Ammunition is limited, enemies can attack from multiple angles, and careful movement is often required to avoid overwhelming situations. While the shooting mechanics are functional, they can feel somewhat rigid at times, particularly during precise aiming segments or in confined environments. The tension created by these mechanics reinforces the survival theme, though occasional stiffness in controls may interrupt immersion. Narrative progression unfolds through dialogue sequences and character interactions. Early in the story, Garrett encounters Kara, a former emergency medical technician leading a small group of survivors. These interactions introduce branching dialogue options and light decision-making elements that shape character relationships. While not deeply complex in terms of branching story paths, these choices add a layer of personal involvement. The game touches on themes of trust, sacrifice, and the fragility of human connection in desperate times. Some moments aim to humanize the bleak setting, offering glimpses of compassion and solidarity amid the harshness. Pacing alternates between action-heavy sequences and slower narrative beats. After tense firefights, the game often transitions into quieter moments where conversations explore personal backstories and motivations. This structure aims to provide emotional weight to the journey rather than presenting it as a continuous barrage of combat. However, the balance between these elements can feel uneven. Some players may find the slower narrative interludes reflective and grounding, while others might perceive them as interruptions to the gameplay flow. Visually, Post War Dreams embraces a subdued aesthetic. The color scheme leans heavily toward grays, browns, and washed-out tones, reinforcing the desolate mood. Environmental detail is modest but effective in conveying abandonment and ruin. Character models and animations are serviceable, though they reflect the limitations of a smaller-scale production. The art direction prioritizes atmosphere over spectacle, and while it may lack the polish of larger-budget titles, it succeeds in maintaining a consistent thematic identity. Sound design complements the atmosphere with ambient noises, distant echoes, and restrained musical cues that underscore the emotional weight of certain scenes. The audio landscape enhances immersion, particularly during exploration segments where subtle environmental sounds build tension. Combat sequences are punctuated by sharper audio effects, though they remain grounded rather than overly cinematic. This restrained approach supports the game’s realistic tone. Reception to Post War Dreams has been mixed, reflecting both its strengths and its shortcomings. Many players appreciate the ambition of blending narrative depth with side-scrolling action in a grounded post-collapse setting. Others point to technical rough edges, including control responsiveness and occasional animation stiffness, as areas where the experience falls short of its potential. The game’s ambition sometimes outpaces its polish, but its commitment to tone and atmosphere remains evident throughout. Ultimately, Post War Dreams stands as an earnest and atmospheric entry in the post-apocalyptic genre. Its strength lies in its attempt to portray survival not merely as a mechanical challenge but as an emotional and moral journey. While its combat systems and technical execution may not fully realize the depth of its concept, the world it builds and the themes it explores leave a lasting impression. For players drawn to somber narratives and grounded depictions of societal collapse, Post War Dreams offers a contemplative and gritty experience that prioritizes mood and storytelling alongside action.
