Portrait of a Torn does a good job creating a dark and unsettling atmosphere through its environments, sound design, and storytelling. The gameplay focuses mainly on exploration, finding clues, and solving puzzles, while the story slowly reveals its mysteries without rushing. It’s more of a psychological mystery/thriller than a traditional horror game, so don’t expect constant action or combat. If you enjoy atmospheric story-driven games with exploration and a touch of horror, Portrait of a Torn is definitely worth checking out. A short, atmospheric mystery with a great sense of tension. Recommended for fans of atmospheric mystery and psychological horror.

BEAUTIFULLY SORROWFUL GAME I absolutely loved playing this game through and through. The story was written spectacularly, and refreshingly something new to the horror genre. The puzzles, while not too difficult, were actually quite fun because you have to go on somewhat of a 'clue hunt' to find the things you need to solve them. The game didn't rely on cheap jumpscares to frighten one, but the slow unveiling of a twisted and horrifying story led by an unknown apparition. Voice acting was stellar and whoever played 'the mother' I swear is the reincarnation of Bette Davis. You will be experiencing two different timelines within the game. Make sure to pay attention to those dates to see how well everything connects together at the end! Now on to my comments for what I think could be improvements within the game. Loading screens need to be left up for at least 30 seconds to a minute longer, as there is important story information being relayed in between chapters that I would have loved to have read. But unfortunately, as fast as they appeared they just as quickly disappeared, not leaving me enough time to read them. There were a few objects within the game that would have not been around yet for the time period (a set of headphones/ a press key combination safe). But that was neither here nor there and didn't throw me out of the game's immersion enough to be perturbed by them. The final cutscene did not trigger for me when it should have in the end and I spent way too long wandering around on the map (which didn't seem to be neatly finished and tidied up around the edges) and I had to retrace my steps to get the cutscene to trigger by stepping in a very specific space. In conclusion, the game is very solid and well put together. If you love a good spooky ghost story with fun puzzles, I would highly recommend this. The game is absolutely not playable due very poor optimization. On PC with RTX 2060 + Ryzen 5 2600X + 32GB RAM + SSD it runs on 20fps with very low settings. It's funny, but build-in "benchmark" applying "Epic" settings automatically, lol. Further more, very low settings that I applied in-advance falling back to epic preset every time I relaunch the game or reboot saves. And yes, it was made with Unreal Engine 5... With such a terrible input-lag the game is not playable at all. And there is more bugs: text on the boot screen is broken with other than English languages; in very beginning you're able to pull game camera through the door; Sorry, but I'm not a beta tester. It's a pity that in such poor tech condition the game just not allow you to evaluate the story and art. Dissapoited.
Portrait of a Torn is a first-person psychological mystery that places storytelling and atmosphere above traditional horror action. Developed by Indigo Studios - Interactive Stories and published by Firenut Games, the game follows Robert, a soldier returning home after years away, only to find his family residence abandoned and consumed by an unsettling silence. What begins as a simple search for answers gradually transforms into an emotional journey through forgotten memories, disturbing discoveries, and long-buried secrets. Rather than overwhelming players with monsters or combat, the experience builds suspense through careful exploration and a narrative that slowly reveals itself piece by piece. The game's greatest strength lies in how it delivers its story through environmental storytelling. Every room, discarded object, handwritten note, and hidden passage contributes another layer to the mystery, encouraging players to observe their surroundings instead of rushing toward the next objective. The abandoned mansion feels believable because every location appears to have its own history, allowing players to reconstruct past events naturally. This approach rewards patience and curiosity, making each revelation feel meaningful while maintaining an emotional connection to Robert's search for the truth. Exploration forms the core of the gameplay, with players investigating every corner of the house while solving environmental puzzles that complement the narrative. These puzzles rely more on observation and logical thinking than difficulty, ensuring they never interrupt the story's pacing. The progression feels smooth because every puzzle serves a purpose within the larger mystery rather than existing simply to delay advancement. Players who appreciate narrative-driven adventures and slower investigative gameplay will likely find this design satisfying, while those expecting action-heavy mechanics may find the experience intentionally restrained. Atmosphere is consistently one of the game's defining qualities. The developers use detailed environments, realistic lighting, and subtle visual effects to create a lingering sense of discomfort without relying excessively on sudden scares. Empty corridors, dimly lit rooms, and carefully designed environmental details make the mansion feel alive despite its apparent abandonment. The psychological tension comes from uncertainty and anticipation, encouraging players to question every sound and every discovery. This quieter style of horror proves more effective than constant shock moments because it allows the imagination to amplify the fear. The audio presentation strengthens the immersive experience even further. Ambient sounds fill the silence with an underlying sense of unease, while the musical score uses restrained orchestral themes to support the emotional moments without overpowering them. Instead of forcing dramatic reactions, the soundtrack enhances the game's melancholic tone and reinforces the emotional themes surrounding loss, family, and painful memories. Together with the visual design, the soundscape creates an engaging atmosphere that remains compelling from beginning to end. Graphically, Portrait of a Torn focuses on artistic consistency rather than technical spectacle. The mansion is filled with intricate environmental details that communicate years of abandonment and hidden tragedy. Lighting and shadow are used effectively to guide exploration while preserving the mystery surrounding each location. Although players should not expect cutting-edge visual technology, the game's presentation succeeds because every artistic choice contributes to the emotional and psychological impact of the narrative. The game is not without limitations. Its linear progression offers little opportunity for player choice, and replay value depends largely on revisiting the story rather than discovering substantially different outcomes. The lack of combat and relatively simple puzzle design may also leave players seeking more mechanical depth wanting additional gameplay variety. However, these design decisions clearly support the developers' intention of delivering a focused narrative experience instead of a traditional survival horror adventure. Overall, Portrait of a Torn succeeds as a thoughtful psychological mystery that prioritizes emotional storytelling, immersive exploration, and atmospheric world-building. Its compelling narrative, memorable setting, and carefully paced investigation create a rewarding experience for players who enjoy uncovering stories through observation rather than action. While its straightforward gameplay and linear structure may not appeal to every audience, the game's ability to blend mystery, suspense, and emotion makes it a worthwhile adventure for fans of narrative-focused horror experiences. Rating: 8/10
Bought this on sale. Wouldn't recommend paying full price as it is very short. I enjoyed the story and the puzzles were not hard. Would like to see this a much longer game with a more developed story. Would play the next chapter, if there will be one.
Unfortunately I didn't like the game. I'm tired of reading letters to understand the story. I also saw some bugs that messed me up. I wouldn't recommend it.
一人称視点のサイコスリラー グラフィック、音楽、ストーリーいずれも良かったです おすすめです
