First of all, I want to clarify that even though Portal 2 superseeds this games in every regard, I still think you should get it in a sale or as a bundle for the following reasons. World Building and Story: It introduces the player to the world of Portal and its mechanics. It also introduces the player to the minimalistic wordl building and context for Portal 2. Learning these mechanics by your own is crucial to make yourself fimilar to the world of Portal and playing them back to back lets you appreciate the development in Portal 2 and its expansion. Tone and Setting: Also, the tone and ambience is much more "grim" and desolate. It feels more like you are awake in an unfimilar space and is intriguing to you to find out what happened and why are you here in the first place. A feeling only replicated once in Portal 2 in a certain chapter. This feeling haunts you the whole playthrough until the last chamber. Because of this unique feature, I'd recommend to try it, especially if you search for the creepy Source Engine feeling. Gameplay and Replayability: The gameplay is snappy and the best selling point of Portal, though I have to admit, that Portal 2 superseeds it in all ways it is still a fun gameplay and with the challenge maps and modes there's some replayability after its completion. Especially because the challenges forces you to think out of the box. Some are outright impossible with the basic mechanics.
